THE QUESTION

Climate bill: Dead or alive?

The Senate climate and energy bill was supposed to launch April 26 but the news conference was canceled at the last minute. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) may abandon the legislation that he worked on with Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) because Democrats have placed a priority on a new immigration measure.

What does this mean for the future of the climate bill? And did Graham just get cold feet or did he really care about the immigration bill timing?

If climate researchers are indeed confident of their technology, they should be eager to show practical results. The Washington Post should ask some researchers believed to be among the best to apply their most successful techniques, predicting a few months' temperature averages, rainfall and snowfall a year in advance, at sites of weather stations with at least 50-year records. Those are basic tasks of the technology. If performed well, the technology earns trust needed to justify investments in climate mitigation.

Following up, the Post should compare actual observations of temperature, rainfall and snowfall at the weather stations with predictions of climate researchers and with long-term statistics to see whether the technology can improve over what would be readily predicted without it. Substantial improvement would point to public benefit from the recently announced national climate service. Lack of it would suggest money being wasted on climate technology at the current level of performance.

It better be alive. In a hundred years few will know or care what the United States did about immigration early in the 21st Century, whereas the world will either thank or curse us for what we did or did not do about global warming.

Evidently the mediators want to screen all of the comments which contain sense or reason in favor of the comments about mindless nonsense borne of other mindless nonsense spewed from the mouths of men with interest in the matter.

First, isn't Congress capable of dealing with more than one topic at a time? Right-wingers wet their pants last year suggesting Obama could deal with only one thing at a time. Here we have the radical right insisting they can deal with only one thing at a time. Conclusion: right-wingers are either stupid or hypocrites.

Second, I see all sorts of right-wingers commenting that climate change is not happening. I ask them, have you turned on a television or looked at a newspaper in the last thirty years? How many news stories do you need? How many disasters does it take? Stop listening to Limbum and Faux News and gather some facts. Remember facts? Those are the things competent and professional journalists report. News Corp and convicted drug abuser are neither competent nor professional.

It is real hard having a conversation with right-wingers these days because they are so uninformed, so badly mislead and so angry and everybody. How do get them to understand that right-wingers created all the messes Obama is trying to clean up. Who has been running this country since 1968? Reaganomics and banking deregulation, Contract On America, the 43 "no accountability" policy nightmare... The United States is engineered just the way Reagan wanted it, and now the right doesn't like it. So, start blaming the people who did this to us.

The exact epitome of the retardation of the United States of America.

Right wingers must all be idiots because they disagree with you and don't consider theories as facts. Moreoever, you must be a genius and understanding of all the worlds ails, yet everyone who disagrees must be so remedial that they can't microwave a bag of popcorn.

Party has nothing to do with it...there are an equal quanitity of idiots on both sides of the political spectrum, and an equal quantity of namecalling, falsifying and exaggerating. Furthermore, for every liberal that believes that all humans should be taken care of regardless of their own indiscretions or ethics, there is one conservative that believes everyone should carry their own weight and quit crying about inequities. Equal idiocy.

Thus, if you stake claim to a party at this point in America, or pay homage to a specific party issue, you are just as misinformed, misguided and idiotic as any Limbaugh listener, Fox News viewer...or Keith Olbermann fan for that matter.

Idiots and lies are easy to find...truth and reason seem to have found themselves extinct in America...much to the chagrin of both GW Bush and BH Obama.

So, you mean to say that the legislating of something we don't understand will be delayed? Excellent.

And so all of you know...global warming is a theory. Theories are defined as well-built hypotheses which contain little factual evidence to be able to classify them as empirical evidence.

Thus, the world may be getting warmer...that does not mean you know why it's getting warmer and that man can formulate business and industry regulations to address the issue in any real way.

Legislating global warming is like legislating the use of tanning lotion. You can slather it on and act like you're outflanking melanoma...but it doesn't mean it will work.

Thus, tell all of us skeptics exactly why these mindless ideas of carbon restrictions will save us, even as people of all colors, classes, religions and races will throw their garbage on the side of the road, provided it's not their neighborhood. Why will this outmaneuver all of the people dump dirty oil in their tree line and into sewer drains in order to forgo the strenuous "free oil dumping" at any service station? Why is carbon the major cause of this catastrophe yet no one grasps that every living creature is carbon based and there are, at minimum, 3x as many living creatures on this Earth than ever before? Why do we not question the countless space programs across the world and their constant launches, through the ozone with the most potent fuel known to man? This has no basis I suppose.

I suppose that I am just an obstructionist who asks questions about things rather than mindlessly accepting the opinions of men whom obviously have an interest in the matter which, is monetary, whether all of you BELIEVERS accept that or not.

You people all watch far too many movies in which Bruce Willis sacrifices himself to detonate some asteroid a million miles before it destroys Earth. If you think that men in power and position don't play on such fears and nonsensical beliefs, your opinion is worthless as you understand nothing about men prior to placing all of your faith within them.

Sure we can have a bill but it would be worth the effort and time if two conditions are met. First it needs to show evidence of thought. What if the climate gets colder? What if the climate gets warmer? What should we do and what is our plan for every possible future? Then there needs to be facts in the discussion. Not "I think it will..." or "We feel..." But the facts are...."

Take care of that and we can have a climate bill we will still be proud of twenty years from now.

The climate bill is nothing more than another means to control peoples lives and take money from them. Without funds you have limited freedom and this is what the so called liberals in Washington want. They know better how to take "care" of your decisions for you.

The "climate bill" is just another impostor. Brother Chaos is winning out. And, as we dither, the alleged small window of "being able to do something" to reverse the inevitable, closes at warp speed. Thus, we are probably already past the tipping point. It's a lost cause, folks. The Four Horsemen are nearing a full gallop. I'm with the poet/songster Bob Dylan, who said it best, "It doesn't take a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing."

The climate bill is a bunch of BS. The only purpose is so that the government can raise more money in taxes. No one in the government actually cares about the climate change. The fact of the matter is, it's totally bogus. The world was worried about global cooling in the 1970's and now global warming. Give me a break. It's a bunch of bull.

The proposed climate bill is the last thing we need right now with a poor economy, high unemployment, and the continuation of backroom deals. Washington has so many insiders with their hands in the pockets of politicians, especially these so-called climate groups in Chicago, that anyone that gets help will be those lining their pockets with tax dollars. You can't tax people to death to change the weather.

Immigration has been brought front and center by someone that wants it front and center. Immigration has no bearing on energy.

I understand why Graham got bent out of shape over the distraction, he has worked hard, against some in his party, to pull this thing together with the Dems. He wants his day in the sun to explain.

Immigration will never be a central issue in this country until we put the illegals out and put the illegal employers in jail. Tell that to the chamber of commerce though and they are going to rev up another distraction.

We will have a standing army in foreign oil lands and oil washing up on our shores and down our valleys into rivers, we will have dead coal miners and oil rig workers until we realize the cost of these unsustainable energies and those that profit from them. People will die and we will pollute our planet until we wise up.

The automobile is from the last century. Coal is from the one before that. We need to be using all of the easy energy; solar, wind, hydro for residential customers and use nuclear for industrial customers. We would pair the energy to the customers by use.
We already have the rights-of-way we need to make trains and light rail the transport of the future. Walking-bicycle paths in between can fill the extended needs. If you don't believe this is possible, visit Europe. It works very well there!

The whole concept of a "climate bill" is a non-sequitur. The ENTIRE Albore thing has been proven to be a croc, and should be thrown onto the trashheap of history with ideas like an Earth Centered Universe.

However, if you want to talk about becoming energy independent, energy self-reliant, improving the balance of trade, stopping funding for repugnant regimes, I'm all ears.

What kills me about you libs is you have a tin ear when it comes to marketing and advertising ideas. You keep beating your chicken little drum that the sky is falling, the glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, etc. even after the entire CO2-temp thing has been proven to be a croc. I do still expect sea levels to rise another 20 feet and fall over 300 feet over the course of tens of thousands of years, but man doesn't cause it. But I digress.

You guys keep pounding the drum on something that has been discredited, when if you turned nationalistic, and started beating the drum beat of energy self relance, improving the balance of trade, stopping sending money to repugnant regimes, and so on, my guess is the American people would say "Yes, you are correct", and you would probably get 90-95% of what you want right now without a fight, and in fact, would have the blessing of the American Public AND their enthusiastic support. You guys might have to hold your nose and swallow "Drill, baby, Drill", but otherwise, I think you could achieve almost all of your goals, and moreover, wouldn't have to resort to the crazy Crap and Tax Albore nonsense.

Here's what you should do: Upfront: Drill, baby, drill. But then follow that with tax credits for both manufacturers and car purchasers to receive tax credits for purchasing flex fuel hybrid cars. Give tax credits to home owners, building owners, as well as home and building builders to encourage installation of solar cells in homes and businesses universally. Build wind farms in the plains ala T. Boone Pickens, and upgrade the power grid to move that power from point A to Point B anywhere in the nation, and use that electricity thus generated to relieve coal and natural gas from generating electricity. The natural gas, in particular, could then be used to power properly equipped flex fuel vehicles, which would displace oil, which would be a big plus from being energy self sufficient, and by generating electricity with solar and wind, you get a big drop in carbon output, making you libs happy.

Something that does need to be done is to make it legal for everyone who has solar cells and/or windmills to have their power meter run backwards.

Anyway, you guys need to change your message from chicken little to being pro-American. Do that, and the people will line up behind you.

VOTE REPUBLICAN!!!

If the Administration pushes the amnesty for illegals while also trying to push the climate program, it will be a lose-lose situation. Seems there are too many who will be against any bill by the Democrats if they insist on putting the amnesty program first and foremost on their agenda.

I think climategate just proved the earth is not warming deal with it,the only one's who really believe it's warming are the ones that are set to make money off of it.

What is the relationship between climate change and carbon credits?? Could it be money?? Lots and lots of money? I think it is time we looked at all this from a different perspective, because I for one cannot see how trading carbon credits for a price is going to secure our planet from climate change. It's all about money, if it were about really cleaning up the planet, these so called environmentalists would be asking us to stop buying plastic bottles, cut back on energy consumption, stop using trees for newspapers, etc. This is called "bait and switch" and if you start with looking up just what the CCE is, you will find it is a means of buying and selling something invisible through the Chicago Climate Exchange owned by people who have a financial interest in same.

It looks like the PM of GB - Gordon Brown - is going down in defeat in last place. Why?

He got way out in front on the global warming issue at Copenhagen - just in time for Great Britain's coldest winter in recent memory. Of course we must not forget that that is weather - not climate, however the political climate is clearly not very healthy.

Meanwhile, despite the alleged rise in sea levels, his hero and mentor, Al Gore, just purchased a seaside mansion near Santa Barbara. It kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Yet another investigation of Michael Mann. This must be about the 50th. They have found nothing. I am glad Virginia has so little crime the Attorney General has nothing better to do;)

I would like to know more about Michael Mann's work. I don't know if his work with tree ring data is right or not, but it will be sorted out through the scientific method, not by the abuse of power by ideological politicians.

The Earth is warming; deal with it.

As for the climate/energy bill, in the past few weeks we have had a major mining disaster and a major oil rig disaster. Maybe the energy companies should concentrate on getting their act together
and we as a country should look for better energy sources.

The climate bill appears to be dead for a number of reasons. Reducing CO2 in the US would make no meaningful difference in global CO2 emissions unless the rest of the globe joined in. Germany and a few other European countries are the only ones likely to join. The Chinese and the rest of the developing world will laugh all the way to the bank if we are stupid enough to hamstring our own economy this way.

Then there is the low probability that climate change (read global warming if you are a true believer) is much influenced by CO2 anyway. Ocean current changes correlate much better with recent global temperature changes than CO2 does, and they appear to be turning negative. Waiting a few years and watching the world get colder will make the 'deniers' and delayers look like geniuses.

The Virginia AG has dropped a real bomb for the true believers. What if Michael Mann at Penn State is forced to give up his data and programs? He is not likely to be taking so much abuse while hiding them for no good reason. If he is exposed as one who forced the data and computer models to fit his pre-conceived beliefs, the whole AGW house of cards will crumble and along with that will come disillusionment and apathy amongst the current set of true believers.
