What can be done now to improve the health of the nation?

Even if health reform is enacted this year it will take years to implement. What are some things that can be done immediately to improve the health of the nation?

I am sickened by the democrats who voted against the house health insurance reform bill, and I will be letting them know. I will also be writing to the blue dog democrats, for a second time, (whether I am in their district or not), to urge them to stand with the party and their constituents in support of a health insurance reform bill which contains the strongest public option possible.

It's common sense that the stronger and more inclusive the public option is, the less expensive health care will become, due to competition, for all Americans. How can so many not see the link between improved health care and the benefits this will bring to this sadly ailing economy? Employers with contractual obligations to pay for employee premiums are faced with laying employees off so that they can afford these massive annual premium cost increases.

I also urge that, at the very least, the requirement that all insurance companies, not just the public insurance option, be required to accept applicants with pre-existing conditions effective January 2010 instead of in 2013. It weakens the effect of the public option if it is the only option which must insure those who have these conditions.

Also, can anyone explain to me why the health insurance reform bill is not scheduled to begin until 2013? So many more of us will lose insurance or be priced out of the market between now and 2013! I would appreciate anything anyone can tell me about this-I don't understand this.

Thank you for listening and hopefully answering my questions.

I think that we shouldn't have to pay for health insurance period. Use the medicare that is being taken out of our paychecks now instead of later. For some people there is no later, some people just die and will have never used that medicare that is being extracted from our paychecks. What's the point of paying twice or more for health insurance??? It would be like going to a grocery store with two check out counters to have to go thru and paying twice, once and a second time near the exit just to make sure that you paid? It's ridiculous.
