Look at the Human Side of Life
I think Congress should place Medicare for the elderly and the disabled at the top of their list of priorities. In order to do this in a wise and educated manner, I think they should each be required to visit their elderly parents and get their opinions on this issue. It would also behoove them to find a disabled individual, whatever his/her problem and have a nice long chat to find out what everyday life is like for many of us.
As an RN who has also been disabled for many years, I know there is a vast number of problems confronting Congress and think it would be wise for them to personalize and not politicize the whole issue as much as humanly possible. That's it. They need to look at the human side of life. They need to climb down off their political "high horses" and open their eyes to real people. Maybe it would help if they all had to wear hospital gowns, open at the back please, when voting on any health-care legislation. That's a picture I and, I think, many others would like to see in Congress.

Tonie, I think many politicians need to realize they are just a heartbeat away from having a serious problem or disability. Most of us who have had our lives disrupted by illness or accident know how tenuous life truly is. We vote therefore we matter. We are citizens therefore we matter. We are their fellow humans who still have families, friends and contributions to make to society. The millions of us who are disabled have a voice and see life from a very different aspect. Thanks for writing, Sue Falkner Wood

Hi Sue:
I think you have hit the nail on the head. It would be a wonderful world if the world of politics would come down to the level of a person with a handicap or chronic illness and see things from our aspect. Too many bills pass with little regard to whom they affect or how. Keep after them, especially the hospital gown suggestion, I think that would be perfect !

Hi Carol, Since you wrote to everyone on the panel you obviously feel very strongly about this issue. I just have a couple of comments for you.
First of all, not everyone voted for Obama. Even many of those who did are surprised by the cavalier way he keeps dipping into the coffers of this great nation. Where is the money to come from?
Perhaps, we should take care of elderly, the disabled and the children before we provide total health care for illegal aliens, as they are doing in CA. Perhaps we should clean up the situation with the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies. There is so much waste that could be harnessed. We have good doctors closing their practices due to the high insurance costs. Other physicians I know, PCP's in particular, are getting out of the baby delivering business because of the high insurance they have to pay annually.
There's not an endless supply of money in the public coffers. We have to carefully pick and choose how the health care reform will be legislated. We can't do it all. I agree with you about the big business and the self-interest aspect however my concern is for the middle class couple who can't afford health insurance. Sue Falkner Wood
