The President's Vision for a Healthy America

The President clearly understands the challenges ahead. He also understands the perils of inaction. Tinkering around the edges of the health system will not do; fundamental reform is required.

He laid out a detailed vision for why we need to change our health system, why we need to do it now and ways to pay for those changes. He proposed a uniquely American solution for reform that is comprehensive, transformative and based on shared responsibility.

President Obama successfully took the many moving parts involved in reform, linked them together in a rational way and reoriented them in a manner that made clear how improving health and reducing cost are inextricable goals. And underlying his case for reform was a commitment of major transformation to a system that promotes wellness, prevention and better health outcomes - the keys to a healthier nation.

He made no bones about the $1 trillion cost, but was clear about how he proposes to pay for it. It's an investment we can ill afford not to make.
