What Now?
Clearly, health-care reform has lost its most experienced and powerful advocate. While in recent months Sen. Kennedy's active leadership was limited by his battle against brain cancer, his presence and advocacy were still tangible. Now that voice is extinguished and we can only hope that his colleagues are able to shoulder the heavy load he's carried for decades as a health-care champion.
His work in the cancer field in particular will be missed. No stranger to the disease as it struck family and friends, Kennedy also recognized the enormous toll the soon-to-be No. 1 killer in the world takes on our nation. He worked to smooth the way for survivors and increase their access to critical services. He also knew the value of awareness and prevention and pushed for more of both. The cancer community in particular will sorely miss him.
