Howard Dean

Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont, is a consultant to Democracy for America, the organization he founded after his 2004 presidential campaign.

Seniors Need Not Fear

The most important thing to remember about health-care reform is that it gives you more choices. You can choose a Medicare-like system or you can keep what you have and get help paying for it if you don't make enough money to afford health insurance.

There have been an enormous number of things said about health-care reform which are not true. Among them, that the bill promotes euthanasia, abortion and government rationing. There are two reasons for this. The first is that people who oppose President Obama are trying to undermine him -- Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) is an example. The second is that health insurance companies are afraid that they will not make as much money.

Many of the things that are being said are designed to frighten America's seniors, a potent voting bloc. Seniors have nothing to fear. In fact, what the President is offering Americans is a chance to sign up for what seniors already have, a Medicare-like system which is affordable, can never be taken away by job loss or illness and will be available all over America. The same kinds of people who are fighting against President Obama's health plan today fought against Medicare in the 1960's.

People have a right to fight against change, but they don't have a right to lie about what is in the bill. They major effect on seniors being discussed in Washington in conjunction with this bill is the possible closing of the so-called "doughnut hole" in the Medicare drug benefit, which would be a good thing for seniors. There are provisions to cut waste fraud and abuse and save money in Medicare, and even the Republicans have said that there are problems in Medicare that should be fixed in order to save money.

Remember, in the end if this bill passes, which I think it will, more Americans will be able to make their own choices about having public or private insurance. One of those choices will be buying health insurance that is affordable and can never be taken away.

Dr Dean, why on EARTH would you choose to have your blog on the site of a RAG like the WAPO?
I can't believe the level of sheer IGNORANCE on these posts!....Not to mention the HYPOCRISY of these old farts who already HAVE Medicare carping about their perceived loss of RIGHTS! WHERE have you idiots BEEN the past 8 years!? Hiding under a rock? THERE's where your "Rights" went: down the tubes of the Neocons' Bush administration! MY main problem with Obama is that he's not changed ENOUGH! from this Reichwing idiocy we've been living under!
I had to walk out of MY Town Hall Meeting in disgust after they AGAIN told me Single-payer was "Off the Table".
This issue has been totally framed wrong from the beginning by the Dems: It was the COMPROMISE that was pushed first, instead of the SOLUTION: Single-payer. THAT should have been clearly designated as our FIRST choice, and the "Public Option" being the LEAST we would accept, instead of it being pushed as "The best we can expect"...which is why all the confusion and the eventual dissipation of the very Reform it was meant to make, opening the door to the cacaphony of these propagandized IGNORANT rightwing mobs.
When will you Dems ever get a backbone?
My husband and I have vowed not to vote for ANYONE who does not support AT THE VERY LEAST a "Public Option", and if on top of this they take BRIBES from the "Industry", they should have THEIR "Socialized medical insurance" taken away!
Maybe the drones and shills on this blog don't yet realize how much their Congresscritters get paid off by their Insurance Industry buddies...starting with Chair Baucus at the TOP..so they CAN'T have a decent public Medical insurance! Nor do they realize HOW the insurance Industry makes its obscene profits: on the backs of those they REFUSE payouts to! Follow the money, you fools! You aren't even smart enough to figure out which side of the bread your butter's on!

Is any-wonder that the truth is being bent by certain Politicians of the GOP, or should I say lied about. This country American is built on capitalism, a system that discriminates against the elderly. We seem to forget to easily, that once a person reaches retirement age, they become a liability to the Capitalist value's and will no longer contribute to helping the rich get richer.

Why do we allow right wing politicians’ and the media to dictate the debate on health care. Its a simple answer, they take the elderly and frighten them, with all these claims, and nothing any balanced politician says, can over come the scaremongers. I hear what you say Mr Dean about insurance company’s, but the simple fact is, they will not operate health insurance policies for people once they reach age 65.

It must be wonderful to live in Europe as a retired person, those Europeans value there seniors’ and the contribution they have made to there Country’s. They spend so much of there GDP on Seniors, European seniors’ get winter heating payments if the temperatures’ drop to freezing, they get free bus travel across Europe, all there meds are free, all there optical and dentistry is free, the younger generation in Europe respect there seniors, the Politicians respect there seniors, the media respect the seniors.

What happen here in America, we have the right wing media like FOX and the Republican party using us seniors’ as political fodder to scare us all, just so they can stop any change to our dreadful health care system, which would result in them losing some of there ill gotten gains.

I think it would be wise of all Americans under 60 to remember once you reach retirement age, you are no good to our capitalist country, so stand up and fight back against all the lie’s , as soon you too- will be in our position, and helpless. All you are good for is being played as porn’s and frightened by the hysterical right wing lunatics who wont allow a fair debate on our country’s woeful health-care system

I wont hold my breath on changes to our woeful health-care system, my only hope is my children will make change happen before they get old.

And I quote from http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org/euthan/

"In a report prepared for Hitler in the summer of 1939, another of his personal physicians, Dr Theodore Morell, having reviewed a survey carried out in the 1920s of the parents of severely handicapped children, wrote: “A number of parents expressed the view: `If only you had done it (i.e., ““euthanasia””) and then told us that our child had died from an illness.’ There is a lesson for us there. We need not suppose that we cannot carry out any salutary measure without the consent of the sovereign people.”

It was clear that the regime could expect no great negative reaction to the programme from the general populace. A survey conducted in April 1941 revealed that 80% of the relatives of those murdered by the programme were in agreement with the decision, 10% spoke out against it, and 10% were indifferent. "

Read this for a history and plan being followed by Pelosi and Obama.

http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org/euthan/

"...the road to state sanctioned murder was to be a gradual one. With the early introduction of legislation (the 'Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service' of 7 April 1933), the Nazis thoroughly purged long-established ethical and administrative public supervisory bodies. Less than 6 months after his election in 1933, Hitler introduced the “Law for the Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring.” It decreed compulsory sterilization for persons characterized by a wide variety of disabilities. It has been estimated that by 1939, 200,000-350,000 persons had been sterilized, many of whom subsequently became victims of the ““euthanasia”” programme. In the same year the Nazis enacted the “Law Against Dangerous Habitual Criminals”, which further blurred the distinction between actual criminal behaviour and the inappropriate social behaviour that characterized many people with disabilities. "

It continues.

Ask your Congressman these simple questions.

1) Who is your insurance provider?

2) What is your actual out of pocket premium for this plan each month?

3) What is the full cost of your plans premium each month?

4) Why can't I or my employer participate in this very plan today?

5) Why does it take a 1000+ page bill to open your plan to the public?

Let's make this a movement.

Read HR3200, please. Read the controversial sections. You will find that a provision to provide a OPTIONAL consultation with your doctor to enable you to decide when confronted with your last days, weeks, or months on this earth exactly what you want done, or what you do not want administered. You may want the ventilator, the stomach feeding tube, and all the other tubes in place. You may want the infections, bed sores, your dignity compromised as you are cleaned where you no longer can clean yourself; but I don't. I have had a health directive in place since the age of 57; I'm now 75. I have seen too many families torn apart with everybody giving their opinion insisting on what they would want rather than what the person lying there has always wanted but never got around to putting it on paper. Let's get off these ridiculous topics that are repeating one lie after another and work to get this reform on how the insurance business has taken over the delivery for our health care. They are in business to make money. Look at their overhead and advertising where billions and billions are spent when it could go to reducing premiums and including more people. Since this industry will not police themselves we must take it into our hands. Have you ever wondered why we see so many expensive ads on tv. for drugs you can't just go to the drug store and buy? It's not like a product you can just purchase at any store, but for their drugs you need to go to your doctor and he must write a prescription. What a waste of money! What about the huge bonuses paid insurance company's CEOs, 100s of millions of dollars a year. It is unconscionable. This is HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM, not a government health PLAN. Are we getting dumber a a nation? Some of these posts tell me it just might be true. There will be rationing, no killing grandma. What the goal is is to have a viable, up-to-date system, affordable, no discrimination for pre-existing conditions, no exorbitant out-of-pocket deductibles or co-pays, no dropping of coverage for the seriously ill, no gender discrimination, no annual or lifetime caps on coverage, extended coverage for young adults, guaranteed insurance renewal. And....keeping our nation in the forefront as we must compete in this 21st century in this global economy.

Christopher Buckley wins again. Everyone read "Boomsday". In it, health care/end of life legislation is proposed to save fiscal collapse. All the politicians realize that the only way to pass anything is to get the approval of the retirees. In order to get it, the bill results in WORSE plans than before. Well done, Christopher, well done. Closing the donut hole will do more fiscal damage than any measly savings gained by the dubious stuff of the current health care plans. Stop the insanity. What we need is to set up a system where spending is lowered by the will of the people. Until people bear the costs of their care they have NO incentive to reduce how much they spend. My thought as to the best plan is one with coverage for all but not 100% coverage... have everyone pay something like 10 or 15 percent of all their costs. THAT will give incentives for people to only have done what they really need. If they are on the hook for $150 for every $1000 MRI, you can bet they won't be getting MRIs every time they visit the hospital. Common sense solutions, folks.

I expect the "public" option to use tax monies to pay for the health costs of those who need health care while allowing the Health Insurance robbers to cherry pick those who do not need or use health care very much...to bloat their profits even more! A plan with over a thousand pages is a plan to appear to do something while actually giving the "farm" to the corporations ...again! Support of Big Pharm is certainly a clear and present danger to the well being of the people of America and a strong indicator that the "plan" is nothing but more BS!

We democrats are angry at Pres. Obama because he has no guts to demand a traditional medicare like 'public option'. I believe obama will betray us again in favor of the bipartisan republican free market Jesus. Those who worship the rich, markets & corporate power. Which means the rich will get richer because taxpayers will be subsidizing market based healthcare, which is the rationing of healthcare.

As a nurse I have seen patients who did not fill out a Power of Attorney for healthcare & express their wishes before becoming ill. Part of the family wanted the patient on a respirator, the other half did not. The family was torn apart. The patient got all kinds of tubes, then came a feeding tube in the stomach. This stomach tube becomes infected because nursing home nurses are to busy to keep the tube open for medications & liquid food. then comes the bed sores because the skin breaks down. Some sores so big you can put your fist in them. This was also a friend of mine who I knew never wanted to stay alive like this. However he just wouldn't take the time to fill out he papers. He was young, 64.
The mindless, birthers, screamers & haters, but especially the politicians who have sworn an oath to protect the health & safety of all citizens, I can only hope the Lord keeps his promise to us when he said , vengence is mine saeth the Lord.
Believe me folks, when you are ill & the most vulnerable, you will find out their are things far worse than death going on today in this broken healthcare system.

None one is going to kill the elderly, but your decisions or lack of them might.

More lies. Obama, Kennedy, Pelosi, Dean, et al. all want single payer. This bill is part of that process. The so-called public option is a Trojan Horse which will be used to drive private health care out of business. They are all lying now, but Obama has been caught on tape openly stating the road to serfdom.

Democrats care more about socialism than anything else. If they really cared about health care there are relatively straight forward fixes. They could start with tort reform, but their litigious masters won't allow it.

Their attempt to rush a 1,000 page bill through before the public properly examines it is indicative of their deceitful and dishonest ways. They are not to be trusted.

The reality is that the federal goverment has made a mess of every social program it manages: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac. Why should they be trusted with all of healthcare?

They are not interest in great health care; they are only interested in equal healthcare with the sole exception being for the members of Congress who will keep their own system.

Having the Democrats fix healthcare is like having Dr. Kevorkian for an EMT.

The Republicans had control of Congress and the White House for six years (2000-2006).

Question:

Guess what the Republicans did about health care during this time?

Answer:

Absolutely nothing. Zero. Nada. Not a damn thing. Zippo.

So why is anyone surprised the Republicans are doing everything in their power to derail Pres. Obama's attempt to reform health care?

Some Republicans simply do not believe providing health care for its citizens is a legitimate function of Government. The rest of the Republicans could care less if people had access to health care or not.

Question to all you Republicans out there.

Why don't you just have the courage of your convictions and just level with the American people and tell them the Government has no obligation to provide health care for it's citizens? Furthermore, why don't you Republicans also tell the American public that if they can't afford health insurance or become bankrupt because because of an illness that it's tough luck and your Government owes you nothing?

Finally, consistent with your belief that providing health care for it's citizens is not a legitmate function of Government why don't you propose legislation abolishing Medicare, Medicaid, and VA the hospital system? Afterall this is "socialized medicine" according to you which you say you are adamanently opposed to.

Republicans hate Government (remember when Pres. Reagan said Government is the problem) so why didn't you during the six years when you were in control of the entire Government didn't you follow through on your ideology and vote to repeal Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid?

Why not I ask you?

As an aside, a Democratic Congressman introduced an amendment to abolish Medicare and Medicare to call you Republican's bluff that any taxpayer financed health care is "socialized medicine."

No Republican Congressman voted for the amendment despite their constant blathering the Obama health care plan is "socialized medicine."

All I can conclude is you Republicans are a bunch of cowards and hypocrits who don't have the guts to vote for what they supposedly believe in (i.e. no taxpayer funded health care or what they call "socialized medicine").

Gutless wonders you Republicans. I have no respect for you at all. What a worthless party the Republicans are!

Dr Dean,

You should really step out of the picture if you want Democrats or health care to get anywhere. You have done great damage to their credibility.

There are two axes in any debate:

1. liberal and conservative views

but the most important axis is

2. belief in despotism or libertarianism.

Liberalism is a point of view that you have every right to have, the despotic side of your arguments are plain unacceptable.

The majority of Americans still believe in personal responsibility and individual freedom rather than expecting others or the government to decide for them. They will have none of it.

The most important thing to remember about health-care reform is that under vast state expansion of socialized medicine everyone will suffer. This flawed, unhealthy ideology from proponents of such a system will result in personal suffering not only in your quality of health-care but economically as well.

You can see the dire consequences of just such a system in the UK and Canada where people suffer not only in quality of health-care but also economically as a nation as well as individually and from personal loss of freedom of choice now and far into the future.
Eastern european countries whose people suffered for so long under such ideology have structurally dismantled the failed system.

Proponents of such a system love to paint a simplistic pretty picture for you. In doing so many leave out the details they don't want illuminated for fear of actually having to explain them. This is also why they write such a huge 1000 plus page bill filled with technical language which no one understands, to bury them. Let us also not forget the path of urgency this bill was on. This was a strategic move by proponents to leave you completely out of this debate.

For example, abortion. The author stated (There have been an enormous number of things said about health-care reform which are not true. Among them, that the bill promotes euthanasia, abortion and government rationing.)
There may not be in the current bill specific language regarding abortion. It is the silence of any specific language on this issue that the courts would very likely use as a green light ruling to allow use of our federal tax dollars to support this procedure in this bill.
Without explicit language in the bill against this procedure the bill is promoting abortion. See how it works. Responsible conservatives in congress have attempted to introduce this language into the bill but have been rebuffed by the controlling liberal democrats in congress.

We have a great health-care system. There are many structural improvements which could and should be made to the current system. The effort should be responsible, 100% bipartisan and in full view of the American People.

Now...for the rest of the story, that is up to you. You have to be involved or risk regret in not doing so far into the future.

Seek the Truth.

From Larry Kudlow, RealClearPolitics:

========================================

QUOTE: "He says reform "would not basically pull the plug on grandma because we decided that it's too expensive to let her live anymore." But the House bill comes dangerously close to giving unelected health boards the power to pull that plug. And as policy students know, it's not always the precise wording of legislation that counts, but the regulatory interpretations of laws that are made by federal and state officials.

So, in a sense, Obama's denial was a non-denial denial. He should have unequivocally demanded that the death-board language be removed from any bill. But he didn't -- perhaps because he agrees with it."--UNQUOTE

Seniors don't fear change; they fear the reformers. President Obama is supposedly a devotee of Saul Alinsky who wrote "Rules for Radicals". I suspect Aexelrod and Immanuel are Saul fans too. Hillary wrote her thesis in college on Saul and got a job offer from him. Saul says in a democracy you must radicalize the middle class to achieve substantive change. The poor and dispossessed are already radicalized. So guess what? The middle class rolled over in 2008 and put these dunderheads in charge of America. Now the classs beating up the elected at town halls is mostly the seniors. They smell a rat(s)). Go Seniors. Show the younger generation what they should have learned in school.

If the Republicans had presented a health care reform plan that would cut funding to Medicare, like the current plans before congress, do you think Dean would be out promoting it? Or do you think he would be fear mongering the legislation to scare the seniors? The man is so political that you have to take anything he says with a grain of salt.

I just want to know basic answers to basic questions. It seems like both sides (for; against) can't provide that. I can read the bill but it is the policies (TBD) that implements the law's language. Is the "end of life consultation"(for) a "death clause" (against)? Does it use tax payers money to provide abortions? Whether true or not or right or wrong, doesnt the taxpayer deserve a Yes or no answer? Will services be cut to the people who will not live long enough to enjoy the benefits of the health care/services? Whatever "long enough" means. The elder, sick, feeble? If I had a infinite amount of money, everyone would have the best health care whether a minute before death or 80 years before death. Does the government have an infinite amount of money??????
If the govt provides health care for everyone in American, then common sense tells me some services will be cut, reduced or just plain eliminated, right?

There is no way that $500 billion can be removed from Medicare without vastly limiting services--seniors SHOULD be worried. Many doctors limit their Medicare and Medicaid "burden" already because the reimbusement rates do not cover the costs.
Instead we should be focussing on reducting the disease burden by focussing on obesity and smoking as the two major causes of premature death-this could be a relatively inexpensive PR campaign.
Medical malpractice reform is also essential to reducing costs. When Obama talks about these places where docs are on salary, doesn't he realize that they can still be sued??? And doesn't he realize that they will indeed be incented to order expensive tests that the hosptials own like MRI, etc, (which cost more that MRI's done at oupatient facilities.)
About quality: Doctors in these "groups", like Mayo, are restricted to referring only to others in their group, thus losing the ability to do the "very best for each patient". This is fine for a presitgious place like Mayo, which has endowments and wealthy foreign "private payers" to pick up the gap between Medicare reimbursement and cost. It can attract some very good (not necessary the best) physicians in every field. But this model will not replicate itself. The Mayo clinic is on the same model that all the teaching hospitals have, but I don't see them all being touted as great examples of cost efficiency.
Until the reformers include fighting obesity and smoking and malpractice reform, we can still assume the reform process is politics/business as ususal, with no serious intention of improving the health of the nation.

April 29 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said his grandmother's hip-replacement surgery during the final weeks of her life made him wonder whether expensive procedures for the terminally ill reflect a “sustainable model” for health care.

hussein's "MANDATORY Healthcare End-Of-Life Counseling" for seniors: "Take either the red pill or the blue pill. With the red pill you die immediately. With the blue pill you die tomorrow. Choose your pill, NOW!"

Achtung! The new political order is here!

You, citizens of our socialist society, have an obligation to do what is best for the Fatherland. If you are not part of the solution, you are a problem. Economic growth and strength of the Fatherland DEMANDS THAT PROBLEMS BE ELIMINATED.

If you are a senior or are weak, sick, infirm, a deviant, handicapped (mentally or physically) or retired, you MUST take one of the pills offered by OUR BELOVED MESSIAH. If you do not comply, you will be shipped to one of the "camps".

All Hail TheOne! Resistance is futile!

Thank you Dr. Dean for a clear, concise analysis of the issues relating to the health care bills in Congress, and the political context in which the opposition is attempting to disparage the efforts of the Democrats.

It is hard to take the opposition to health care reform legislation seriously when many of the vocal opponents are seniors who already have a single payer health care plan - medicare. Those under 65 are paying for their health care.

All we are asking for is some reforms so that wage earners can obtain better quality coverage at affordable prices that cannot be taken away. Seniors should be able to understand that. They should look at their children and grandchildren and want them to have a future where they are not burdened by soaring health care costs and the spectre of losing coverage when they need it most.

IF YOU DON’T REALLY BELIEVE ObamaCare WILL EUTHANIZE BASED ON AGE, COST AND INCONVENIENCE ............

just ask yourself what are the criteria in ObamaCare for Partial Birth Abortion where the Baby has its brains sucked out DURING birth when its legs are already born.........

Partial Birth Abortion is promoted and paid for by ObamCare due to the Babies age, cost and inconvenience.

ElderAbortion (euthanasia) under ObamaCare will be no different. Its the next step. “Aged based treatment “ means if you are over 60, no treatment for you. Did someone say give her a pill???

And realize that most people LIKE babies.

ObamaCare–VOTE NO–trust your instincts-- its ElderAbortion.

SELECTION DAY
by JaxMax

Miriam dressed carefully, choosing clothes that favored her figure. No coffee today, she reminded herself as she reached for the cup, it causes your blood pressure and pulse to rise. She pinched her cheeks to make them look more healthy.

The Physician glanced at the charts online–Female 70 requests heart bypass, excellent health but clogged arteries. He moved the mouse and made the selection, clicking ME (Mandatory Euthanasia) per the Protocol.

The chart was then e-mailed down the hall to 2 other physicians. Both also made the selection, not looking at the chart.

Miriam looked at the Doctor carefully. She knew she was age based out, but she had heard Doctors had discretion. He just looked bored.

“Ms........" he paused looking at her chart for her name,"Miriam, your blood pressure is high, we are going to give you a shot to lower it for the exam,” he said while squirting the syringe.

Sounds reasonable, Miriam thought as the needle went in.

Suddenly Miriam saw her Father.......it was years ago I Brooklyn. She was a young girl and he had just come home from work. Her Father would talk with her at the kitchen table in their small apartment while her Mother finished Dinner. She never forgot the day her Father had brought home a large book from the Library and showed her the pictures.

“If every 100 who were murdered had just killed one murderer on their way to die.......” Miriam struggled to remember the rest of what her Father said.

Then she calmly realized she was dying. Her Father had gently told her.

The Doctor was shocked that Miriam had the strength to hurl the heavy metal exam tray. He didn’t have time to move as it crushed his head. He was amazingly calm as he dispassionately reviwed the location and knew he would die.

He asked himself, "How did she know I was ME her?"

As the Doctor died, Miriam's Father smiled and opened his arms.........

Sorry, it's not about what's good for the country, good for the people, or good for me personally, it's only about beating Obama.
