As the heroic Capt. Richard Phillips reminded us when he offered himself to the pirates instead of his crew, sea captains, like all good leaders, are expected to sacrifice themselves and their personal interests to protect those under their command. What are other examples from other fields of endeavor of leaders who have succeeded or failed to live up to this obligation? What factors should leaders consider when deciding when and whether to make extraordinary personal sacrifices?

Hitler was an extraodinary leader who took his entire nation to war, and he never sacrificed himself but he sacrificed millions of others.
Leadership is the art of CONVINCING others to do his bid when he has no legal authority (otherwise, is a simple order like in the military).
Capt. Phillips convinced the crew to protect themselves while he took the risk. That's leadership. The opposite is cowardice as in the case of that sack of excrement who received five deferments to avoid serving his country in Viet Nam, but had no moral problem in sending others to war and death in Irak, or joining the National Guard knowing full well that branch did not go to war (thus saving his stinky asset).

It is heartening to know that there are still many Americans of integrity, courage and selfless valor like Capt. Phillips. If Wall Street and the banks were populated with men like Phillips & Sullenberger, the country wouldn't be suffering this financial apolcalypse. Wall Streeters are looking out only for themselves, never mind the lowly masses.
