Exploring Leadership in the News with Steven Pearlstein and Raju Narisetti

THE QUESTION

Obama's step No. 1 after the midterms?

Like U.S. presidents, military and non-profit leaders often face the equivalent of "midterm elections" in which they and their strategies are subject to an initial market test or performance evaluation. What's the first thing President Obama, or any leader, should do or say when confronted with unambiguously negative results from a mid-course evaluation?

President Obama and our country's situation remind me of an experience I went through in a large private business with a reputation for being well run. The basic situation was that the particular part of the business that I worked in was going through what turned out to be very rapid change. Most of that management and most of the professional technical staff were simply not capable of dealing with the change. The standard management strategy was to dodge accepting any responsibility for dealing with it. The exception was an ambitious manager who had a short history with the company. He had made a career switch from the academic world. He was more capable of dealing with the change than the rest of the management and ambitious for the opportunity to lead the process of exploiting it. The rest of the management were happy to give him that opportunity. They just waited for his more or less inevitable failure. Even though he performed relatively well, he had very little chance of turning the business around and making it competitive in a very changed and very competitive marketplace. Once he had stumbled, the company actually promoted him. But he was moved from his line management job to another role where his basic task was to clean out a couple hundred professional techncial staff whose function disappeared when the business changed. Once that task was done, he moved on. Meanwhile, the business segment continued to flounder through a couple more cycles in local upper management change until its remnants were sold off to the company that had newly emerged as dominant in its market. This whole process took place in the context of a larger business that was going through a major change driven by a CEO with a big reputation. As far as I could tell, his leadership made no contribution towards a successful outcome for the part of the business I worked in. The basic process he drove was just getting rid of everything that could not fix itself and finding an alternative revenue stream that was capable of sustaining the future of the business. Fortunately, for the value of my defined benefit pension, that process seems to have succeeded.

Replace fossil fuels and reform immigration as quickly as possible, making good on core issues he pledged to deal with in his presidency.

As the dust settles on the economic problems of the country and health care reform begins to be seen across the country, 2012 should be a cakewalk for 4 more years.

Order the Justice Department and Homeland Security to immediately begin to STRICTLY enforce our EXISTING immigration laws and start deporting every ILLEGAL ALIEN in our country.

Order a re-interpretation of the 14th Amendment to it's original intent and make it retroactive to 1950. All ILLEGAL ALIENS and their offspring, read anchor babies, would then be deported.

Order the Justice Department to investigate any and all companies/employers who hired ILLEGAL ALIENS and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

Order all our troops out of Iraq, South Korea, Europe and elsewhere in the world and station them along our southern border with strict orders to stop the invasion of ILLEGAL ALIENS by whatever means necessary.

Order a 5 year freeze on all immigration except for the absolute top 50,000 scientists, engineers, doctors, etc.

Order the Justice Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the bush administration, in particular it's lies to involve us in the Iraq war. The death penalty for bush, cheney, rumsfeld, rice, wolfowitz, feith, etc would be LEFT ON THE TABLE.

Obama should renounce being a die-hard Keynesian. He should stop giving hard-earned taxpayer dollars to bankers and groups that have funded his electoral bid.

But most of all Obama must create jobs by giving grants (and not loans) to startup businesses with less than 12 employees (not small businesses). Startups need to hire. Small businesses (in SBA terms are companies with less than 500 employees) are definitely not hiring.

Obama did not listen to the disenfranchised, the poor and the jobless - thus he lost the goodwill of the electorate.

Obama's Disaster

Obama is walking into video torture central, Indonesia. This looms as another situation that may caste him as a weak and impotent President, yet it could so easily have been his mid-term miracle.

West Papua is another colony, just as East Timor was. East Timor finally got it's vote in 1999 after it gained popular support due to a video of the 1991 Dili Massacre which was smuggled to the western media. So too West Papua is now gaining sympathy as Americans see the videos of a disemboweled Yawan Wayeni and the Free West Papua movement being taunted by Indonesian soldiers as Mr Wayeni dies on camera, and the most recent videos of Indonesian forces beating and torturing other Papuan people.

Obama has set himself up as a silent and subservient President; like the subservient Australia PM this week, Obama will silently accept Indonesia's scapegoat trial of a few officers as a bizarre justification for continued Colonial rule of Papua by a foreign Islamic power.

Yet, in one action Obama could have both shown the world that America is a leading force for good, and addressed the American Right's assertions about Obama's religious inclinations. And how practical was this? Completely. As pointed out by the 20101010 Project, West Papua only needs a voice - specifically it just needs somebody to allow the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to give it's independent opinion whether West Papua is a colony.

It's very simple:
First, listen to the people. We understand well, and are directly feeling the effects of, the wrong policy directions in the US today. The corollary is to stop listening to your advisers who are giving you bad policy and political advice.
Second, for the medium and long term, you and the Congress must - absolutely must - work together to permanently fix the fiscal imbalances, which are unsustainable, both at the federal and state levels. This means cutting entitlements and cutting public sector retirement pensions and benefits, and raising some taxes, for example, eliminating the tax deductions for interest on home mortgages.

Act in good faith and call those out who act in bad faith...yeah, that's you Speaker Boehner. The old GOP and the new Tea Party all claim that we must end the deficits and debt that the old GOP has been piling up since Reagan pushed us from the largest creditor nation to largest debtor nation in 1988.

OK, let's stop the spending and focus government on solving real problems for real citizens.

First, the price of extending the tax cuts for the rich is too high - let's let it sunset and bank that cash.

Second, let's look at corporate welfare such as the Investment Tax Credit intended for corporations to invest and innovate has been costing trillions and yet the companies that claim it have deserted their US headquarters and factories for the pacific rim. Wonder how much we'd save by limiting the credit to those companies operating entirely in the U.S.

Third, apply basic Earned Value Management Systems requirements to government projects and government contracts, and cancel projects and vendors that cannot stay within requirements.

Fourth, enact modest campaign financing and eliminate all campaign donations to place candidates on an equal footing; require all candidates to participate in no less than three varied format debates on public access channels without recourse to negotiating terms. Besides reducing the hype in campaigns and eliminating the need to fundraise once in office, this measure would free up tons of time for Congress to actually review and debate the real issues before us.

Fifth, create a clear and navigable path to real citizenship for immigrants to reduce the incentive to come here illegally. Contrary to xenophobic and racist extremists on Faux News, the immigrant population is vital to our nation's economy and it's overall growth as well.

Illegals don't cost nearly as much money in the hospital ERs across America as they contribute in social security and other taxes which they pay without being eligible to collect...that's right, they're pumping Billions into the economy that's shoring up social security and sales taxes.

The key issue is jobs. President Obama's economic team should listen to the advice Warren Buffett made in 2003 in a Fortune Magazine article. He pointed to the massive trade deficit problem the nation then had, a problem that has continued to worsen, and suggested a remedy to balance our trade and preserve jobs in the U.S.

Buffett argued that we could achieve a trade balance "by issuing what I will call Import Certificates (ICs) to all U.S. exporters in an amount equal to the dollar value of their exports. Each exporter would, in turn, sell the ICs to parties--either exporters abroad or importers here--wanting to get goods into the U.S. To import $1 million of goods, for example, an importer would need ICs that were the byproduct of $1 million of exports. The inevitable result: trade balance."

Little attention has been paid to Buffett's proposal. Instead we get mostly rhetoric from office holders.

When Buffett made his suggestion our trade deficit was about $40 billion a year. It continues to grow. This year it is approching $70 billion and our jobless rate continues to climb.

Here's an idea. Get militant. Not talking violence, but in the activist sense. The country is unhappy? Yeah, sure they are...unemployment is high, there's no surprise there. But how did that equate into the Democrats getting voted out when the GOP is at fault in the first place? The GOP shouted louder. The left needs to steal some plays from the right. First, never speak ill of another Democrat. Second, never compromise or negotiate with the other side. Third, get a killer instinct and look hard at the GOP -- there is so much there to criticize its a bit overwhelming.

If what I'm hearing here, there is some good news for the President. According to Edward Rendell, Governor of PA, most of the Democrats who lost tonight voted against health care reform. People voted against those Democrats who would not take a stand with the President and fight for what they are really looking for in this country change. They are tired of no backbone Democrats. The President and the Democrats have really got to make a stronger case that they are not status quo Washington, but that they fight for real meaningful change. If the economic policies put in place begin to show real results, the next two years could offer some real surprises for the Republicans.

In my haste, I made a stupid mistake in my prior posted comment. I wrote that our trade deficit in 2003 was $40 billion a year and is now approaching $70 billion. I should have written "month" rather than year. When Warren Buffett made his argument, our trade deficit was approximately $40 billion a year. It is now approaching $70 billion a year. An annual trade deficit of $40 a year is not a disaster. Our current deficit certainly is.

It's hard to imagine that someone should think he should quit or resign when the stated purpose of the Republican Party, as iterated by the new Speaker, is to make sure the President is a one term president. That in itself isn't so bad until one thinks how that would be accomplished...by making him fail, by trying to block all legislation put forth. The bottom line is, by working strictly for the party, not the country, as was done the first two years.

The Democrats need to get their message out, get the platform out to the public. They did a terrible job of getting the message out the first two years.

The first thing Pres. Obama needs to do is understand why they lost the House. What could they have done differently? The Republicans worked steadily against the President for the first two years. It is only going to get worse. They will be no bipartisanship. The Republicans want President Obama to fail for the good of the Party. I wish they, for once, would think of the good of the country.

How silly that people should suggest Obama resign. That is genuinely un-American, besides being silly.

Obama has to realize by now that the GOP was never interested in bipartisanship. Ever since Obama was elected, the Republicans have been on the attack, in part through their Frankenstein's Monster, he Tea Party. Obama has sought consensus, he tried diplomacy, it does not work with a political party that has never forgotten the shellacking it got in the 30s, when its freewheeling capitalism crashed the world economy the firt time.

Obama has to rally his party, now, and learn from the GOP: Attack the opposition but rather than use lies, calumny, swiftboating, and the like (the Republican system), just use facts: Who crashed the economy (again)? Who led us into two quagmires? Who do the Republicans really support (anyone with a really big bank account)?

Forget being Mr Nice Guy. Those days are over. The GOP wanted a culture war? They should get it. Bullies have to be slapped back, hard and fast. The Democrats have to keep reminding the voters that the GOP is the party of No, the Party without a single political idea except supporting their masters, the superrich. They are a useless party and have to be brought back to the middle. And they have to repudiate those loonies of the Tea Party.

1. Corporate America is taking over our nation by destroying democratic government with propaganda ads--money for votes. Don't play ball with that. Solution: ONE MORE SC JUSTICE ASAP and kill secret corporate donations--publicly financed election.

2. You helped small business with enough cash to create jobs. Instead, they sat on the cash and waited for this election. Now, follow FDR's lead. Immediately fuel a WPA program with tax dollars. Then dare the GOP congress to resist job creation.

3.Remember every education dollar comes back at least seven times: less drug & alcohol treatment, less prison time, fewer drop-outs, fewer welfare families, more graduates paid more with better jobs who become tax-payers instead of tax-consumers.

4.Every thousand $ in taxes spent on healthcare saves millions in "private taxes" paid to insurance company corporations who keep most in profits, cover as few sick people as they can and give millions to the vote "NO" Senators to cinch the deal. Tell all voters--every year preventative care adds to a taxpayer's life more than pays for single-payer health-care. -- Ask Europe.

5.Watch the GOP try to "cut taxes, balance the budget" and keep low taxes on the rich. To do that they must cut billions from the military and let Wall Street and American business sink or swim. If not, then what?

6. If the Tea Party folks are sincere, they will dump the GOP congress overboard with the tea in 2012, and keep you captain (President) of the ship.

7. Oh yes, immigration. Most American employers cheat illegal immigrants by paying illegal wages, overtime, minimum wage, SS taxes, etc. Illegals can't report them for fear of arrest. Instead, when an illegal immigrant whistle-blows their employer's illegal actions, reward every illegal employee on their payroll with a green card. Then impose an import tax on every foreign manufacturer to sell their goods in the U.S. unless they prove they paid their workers equal to American union wages and benefits. Foreign and American workers win.

Obama made the mistake of trying to accommodate and compromise with a Republican party that responded
by setting all time historical records for Senate filibusters to create gridlock and block everything. It was a cynical strategy without precedent in US history designed to create public anger and deceive the pubic into blaming the Democrats. It worked because the Democrats and the Obama Administration failed to attack it soon enough and strongly enough. The only way to deal with this kind of cynical and destructive strategy is attack it directly and firmly. There must be no more accommodation with the force of evil the Republican party has become.

Republicans are so much better at propaganda. Hot air is cheap. They entertain. They fight. They have backbones. They have control of the media. Unfortunately, it's all laid at the altar of their corporate masters. Obama must finally recognize this.

The Tea Party has been a wonderful and new way for Republicans to capture Independent voters away from Democrats, despite what Democratic "pundits" say about them. Tea partiers are still listed on the Republican line in ballots. Duh! So-called pundits say they'll be trouble for Republicans. Don't bet on it. How is wanting less regulation, smaller government (starve the beast), and lower taxes going against Republican ideology?

Message to President Obama:
Your magic moment has passed; you've blown it. You won't accomplish whatever your remaining agenda is with the House fighting you every step of the way and a razor thin Senate majority. Will you finally understand this? Bipartisanship went the way of the Dodo in the U.S., some three decades ago. Jeeze, read a history book.

P.S.
Health care reform would have been great, if it made sense and wasn't so tortured, garbled, unfathomable, and unfair to the American people in favor of Big Pharma, HMOs, and corporations.

Jobs would have grown, not shrunk, if you had made TARP conditional on banks LENDING to small businesses, not sitting on their pile of zero interest cash they are hoarding. Duh!

Going big, rather than anemic for economic stimulus would have been peachy keen also. Recruiting Geithner, Rubin, Summers was the biggest mistake you made. They just rewarded their fat-cat cronies on Wall Street. Don't you get it??????????

I think the election worked out well for President Obama, he got his major agenda accomplished in the first 20 months of his administration with healthcare, Wall Street financial reform and a stimulus package and at the same time stopped a meltdown of the economy. He brought the war in Iraq close to an end and the war in Afghanistan while slow and tedious is starting to show some positive results. With such a heavy plate, I think he accomplished a great deal in that short time.
The first thing the president should do now is to get with the Republicans in the House and work on a jobs related bill for the country. Jobs are the number one issue in the Country.
The second thing, the president should do is let all of the Bush tax cuts expire to help with the deficit. Going forward he should work with the Republicans on tax cuts that are paid for and serious spending reforms.
The third thing, the president should do is talk to the country and let them know our best days are ahead, that he is optimistic about the future and we are indeed headed in the right direction.

There is a biblical scripture that states, "all things work together for the good to them that love the Lord and are called according to his purpose."
The Republican and the Democratic party needs to understand this was a referendum on President Bush term, the previous Republican Congress and President Obama's first half of his term and the Democratic Congress.
There are plenty of lessons for each political Party to learn from this election. For Republicans to celebrate with glee this mid term landslide of elections without any clear vision for American is egotistically immature. The bible also states "where there is no vision the people perish." There cannot be any singular or comprehensive vision for America without learning from the subliminal and conscious messages of the electorate in 2010.
The danger for the Republican Party is to think that they have a dictatorial mandate ushered in by the Tea Parties. Power and politics make strange bed partners; becoming soul mates, disguising their intentions as being representative of the people? Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
It would behoove both Party's to begin to understand that they are SERVANTS of the PEOPLE and not the reverse. "He that would be great among you, let him first be your servant."
Republican and Democrats must work together with President Obama for "if we bite and devour one another, we all will be consumed." Teeth and tongue may fall out with each other (teeth bite the tongue) but they must work together to help an individual eat, chew, swallow and stay healthy.
Booker T. Washington once stated, "we can be separate as five fingers on a hand but in order for that hand to grasp anything, the fingers have to work together."
This is where we are at in this political discourse; Conservatism without compassion is as dangerous as Liberalism without discipline.

WHy should anyone believe what Pres. Obama has to say at this point? His tracjk record is to follow his actions not his words - transparency, bi-partisan, etc. are just examples where his actions did not support his words. I recommend that we follow his actions over the next several weeks and months to determine whether he herd the voice of the people or the voices of his fat cat donors. The people have said NO to big government and his donors said shape up or we will not back you. What that translates to bears watching!

Prepare Three Envelopes

A fellow had just been hired as the new CEO of a large high tech corporation. The CEO who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three numbered envelopes. "Open these if you run up against a problem you don't think you can solve," he said.

Well, things went along pretty smoothly, but six months later, sales took a downturn and he was really catching a lot of heat. About at his wit's end, he remembered the envelopes. He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, "Blame your predecessor."

The new CEO called a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO. Satisfied with his comments, the press -- and Wall Street - responded positively, sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him.

About a year later, the company was again experiencing a slight dip in sales, combined with serious product problems. Having learned from his previous experience, the CEO quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, "Reorganize." This he did, and the company quickly rebounded.

After several consecutive profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope.

The message said, "Prepare three envelopes."

The first thing that President Obama needs to consider is broadening the circle of persons from whom he takes advice. At a Martin Luther King Day service at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Professor Cornel West observed that none of the President's closest advisors had a history or track record of involvement in working-class, poor, or disenfranchised people's concerns (yes, we all know about the President's own foray into organizing in Chicago). The advisors to whom I refer need to be persons who are predisposed to the interests of those constituencies and capable of translating those citizens' concerns operationally.

The second thing that the President needs to accompany the expanded cohort of advisors is a return to the principles of community organizing 101: finding ways to communicate, communicate, communicate what his administration actually is accomplishing, and how those accomplishments benefit the everyday citizen. That needs to be done not on an all-you-can-eat(i.e. broad vision)scale, but rather, a portion-controlled (i.e.,local specifics/self-interest)one, that may be more easily digestible. As fine a rhetorician as Mr. Obama is, he is no down-to-earth communicator.

This is not now, nor has it ever in the past been, a nation of thinkers. It continues to be a relatively young political experiment founded on xenophobia, uneven distribution of power, and the primacy of the interests of the plutocracy. Like most adolescents, it is highly susceptible to reactionary impulses.

Mr. Obama -- his assessment of Americans' capacity to be their best selves notwithstanding -- would do well to borrow a page from Ronald Reagan's speech-writers, who understood the power of Americans' need to feel good about themselves, along with the resonance of allusions/illusions such as "morning in America" [greed is good], and a "city on a hill" [let us remake the Soviet bloc in our image].

"Yes, we can!" is fine for a campaign slogan, but when the people find that they cannot, they then look around for someone to blame for why they can't. Mr. Reagan's writers and advisors understood something crucial about a nationally embarrassed (a coup over the few and the proud!!), economically unstable (inflation through the roof)electorate: not only is all politics local, but also Americans' understanding of politics essentially is elementary, rooted in bread-and-butter; an understanding which resides primarily on the lowest stratum of Maslow's hierarchy.
Once the Administration "gets it" relative to that reality, then, perhaps, the "change" that's been promised may be easier to identify.

Work with the tea-partiers to get rid of earmarks. Does anyone really like these things other than congressmen and women? It would put the tea partiers words to the test, it would put Obama on the initiative. If he moves it forward as something he is willing to do, he will get credit.

Earmarks suck... they are only used to swing votes on legislation, and are never about the legislation itself. It wont save huge amounts of money, but people in both parties hate earmarks.

I think that what we should do now is be the party that the repubs were for the last two years. Seek 2nd amendment remedies and be as obstructionist and vigilanties as they have been. That seems to get you voted into office. Doesn't matter what the truth is, just make up your own facts and people will believe you. Repubs always put policies that favor the rich, giant corporations and only ask for your help when they need you to vote for them.

Of course, we can replace fossil fuels!
How about with Chivas Regal??
It's only about $40.00 per liter..
As long as fossil fuels, come from the earth, it's going to be the lowest cost fuels, available.
Now, if you want to pay $5.69 per gallon for Ethanol, go ahead.
Again, as long as fossil fuels comes from the earth, they're going to be the lowest priced, fuels, available.
If, for some unimaginable reason, you elect to pay a few dollars more, per gallon, go ahead.

Why "reform immigration laws"?
Why not enforce the law??
The same as we do laws against murder, robbery, and assault?

I think President Obama should say that he can lead the voters to the watering hold but he can't make them drink and that no matter how well one leads it will not necessarily make the voters one bit smarter or more intellignet.

Yes. I think it is time to realize that the voter of today is not necessarily the brightest voter on the block.

Really, two years and these voters vote back in the same Party that spent, beyond measure, all their tax dollars in Iraq and left them broke. What can a Nation due with voters like this? Right, nothing. One has to let them continue digging the big hole they are digging for themselves and their future.

It's the voters not the leadership and that is a much more serious problem for the future of this Nation.

94134gamesmith: Why the U.S. midterm elections are bad for the global economy

In retrospect of the last economic programs, I sensed Mr. Obama sidestepped on the term or methods to focus on the solutions except on the foreclosures; he just ran on with the campaign. It is either he dislikes the solutions his goons offered, or he has none of it. Since he clear out Summers, Emanuel, Blair and others, he must have something else in mind. I do not think he is exhausted on his struggles on his conscience or advice given; he does have a good brain I hope.
At one time, he switched from public to town hall, and went on to backyard. I wondered if his advisors and Secret Services endeavored to spin on him. I think they were playing Psychiatrists around him, and made him lied on the reclining chair.
There is less of Mr. Biden’s “use sit while you can.” Or, Ms. Pelosi’s “remember who put you here, Mr. Obama.” Or Mr. Emmanuel’s”It wasn’t the way it supposed to be.” Now, new environment with new staff and new mid-term, it would give him a rock to hid, or he is giggling behind the umbrella, shouting, “It is raining, and I have to meet Mr. Boehner”.
After to-day, I hope he does not have to look into the mirror over and over again. “Am I nice guy?” or Am I tough?” They are not the question anymore. Just before the new Congress swears in, I wish he can read some books on “Mr. Nixon”, and questions on how it does ”I am not a crook!” work. I do believe his “Yes, we can.”
Stop looking into the mirror and ask yourself. This is just hard to please everyone; especially, everyone is for themselves.
May the Buddha bless you?

In order to create jobs we have to invest in construction.
USD$ one billion invested in construction can create 100 thousand jobs both directly and indirectly in all deciplines of engineering.
So in order to create 10 million jobs, we have to invest at least USD$100 billion in construction.
We have to follow Dubai model. The Dubai ruler has invested USD80 billion and created nearly 8 million jobs.
Like Dubai, America has to construct the tallest buildings, most beautiful man made islands, roads, railways, bridges etc.
The infrastructures which was created in USA is very old.
We must have a planning commissionfor USA for next 20 years and should have plans from now on.
Meanwhile, USA can help Dubai Ruler to come out of the crisis. By doing so, millions of americans and europians will get job in Dubai. This in turn will effect the cash flow in to Europe and the Europians will be able to invest in USA.
This will create millions of jobs in USA.
USA should not stop the outsourcing to India. When the money goes to India, it will come back to USA in terms of warpalnes, nuclear energy companies, etc.
We sholud keep the money in rotation.
Apart from this, America should devalue the dollar value. This will lead to printing of more currency.
In short term, this will have negative effect on dollar value. But in the long run it will benefit America.
America should open its gates for Foreign engineers, businessmen and companies.
They can create a lot of jobs.
USA should invest in manufacturing sector by recruiting people from India like countries.
This will enable American companies to run economically.
When the money goes to India through these Indian workers, it will agin come to USA by reinvestment and export import.
My Humble ideas.

Meaning, stay healthly so you can be strong, read and listen without interruptions so you are prepared for anything the future may hold, stay committed to yourself because this will add fortitude and build character, keep your traditions because it is your heritage that you will pass down to future generations. Stay loyal to your Country, because you are an "American" and America should always come first.

President Obama needs to hear the people. This maybe a Global World we live in, but America is our home. We need to take care of America first; and all Americans need to put America first. That is how we will stay strong, healthy, and wise.

President Obama would do well to review his own actions over the past two years and the things he has said that were divisive. He is President of the United States, not of the DNC or Progressive movement.

He needs to realize that budgets are important to have and manage and borrowing from the future is not a good strategy.

The US Gov't can do a lot of good things, but there are, and should be, limits to what it does and is willing to do.

We all need to live within our means.

Step 1. He should take a cue from his friend Deval Patrick and get off his @$$ and start communicating. He used to give such great speeches. Too little, too late now, but still better than never.

Step 2. He should fire his idiot advisors who snatched such a total "shellacking" from the jaws of an historic victory and rising tide of popularity. This shows the White House needs professionals, not kids.

Step 3. If he does not repeal Don't Ask / Don't Tell during the lame-duck session of Congress this year, Obama might as well resign and let Joe Biden have a chance, because he will have irreversibly destroyed the progressive "movement" that put him into office and he will never win another election.

The definition of leadership is helping a group to agree on and commit to an objective. This includes consensus which is defined as everyone feels they have been heard and are willing to go along even if they do not agree. Obama did not come anywhere near achieving this with the health care law and that is a big reason for his big loss. In his press conference today he said he needs to go for consensus. Bob

Ignoring the rabid partisanship and views that mark many of the answers, most of which aren't realistic and only spell disaster, the President has one thing he needs to do from the start to revitalize his Presidency... Break his Mold.

President Obama is a great charismatic leader but is a lousy managerial leader. His style is strictly to speak and expect others to act upon his ideas. This may work in a church or in a small group, but in a government run by people who all want to be in charge, its a recipe for failure. He allowed the small group of Democrats in the Senate and House to dictate policy and decisions upon him instead of the other way around. He needs to realize he is the leader of the party and act that way.
Drive change, send his 'advisors' into Congress to push his ideas, even if means (as it should) that the opposing party's ideas are partially incorporated into the final document. Remember that he alone is 1/3 of the government, not still one of 535 members of 1/3 of the government and threaten to veto his own party's legislation if it doesn't meet his standards of change.

By actually being a leader and manager, he can drive change, give the youth what he promised them in 2008 and still achieve his goals while showing that he's willing to work with anyone - even if it's not his own party (worked great for Clinton).

Now, I don't see him doing this since it's just not his style but if he did, he'd be assured of a victory in 2012 along with marginalizing the fringes on either side.
