The Military: A Leadership Laboratory
I have considerable respect for Tom Ricks, but disagree with him on this score. Leadership is both taught and learned. My education at West Point set the foundation for this, and three decades in the Army exposed me to a leadership laboratory second to none. I'll let the service academies defend themselves, but I would be uncomfortable with an Army with officers not trained and educated from multiple sources, to include ROTC, Officers Candidate School and West Point. In my experience, the various sources of commission are complementary and strengthen the fabric of our great military.
