Good business vs good television

Q: In the hit TV show "Mad Men," which ended its season Sunday, Don Draper becomes the de facto leader of the fictional ad agency, despite his cool detachment, his brusque manner and his brutal honesty. He follows the old adage that it is better to be feared and respected than liked, but he's also fiercely loyal to people who do good work. Does Don Draper pass the leadership test?

The seeds of 21st-century leadership are evident in much of good popular culture-as are the signs of the times that we abandoned long ago, usually for the better. Today's forward-thinking leaders are connected and engage globally. They seek to listen to, comprehend and connect with every stakeholder-be they friend, foe or simply misunderstood. They inspire with vision, and they follow through with action. That might not make for the most riveting television-but it makes for very good business.
