Happily neverafter?

To the shock of even their closest friends, Al and Tipper Gore have announced their separation, after 40 years of marriage. And this is the couple that openly showed affection and wrote the book "Joined at the Heart." Can a marriage that comes apart still be considered successful? And if Al and Tipper can't make it, is there hope for the rest of us?

Most research indicates that married men are happier than unmarried men and, paradoxically, that unmarried women are happier than married women.

It is certainly worth sticking it out with a real life partner who understands and appreciates you despite one's failings.

Shared visions

Can a marriage that falls apart still be considered successful? Yes. For as long as it lasts, there can be "good" in a marriage. Al and Tipper Gore raised productive children and were engaged in outstanding projects.

Gift of freedom

Perhaps each of the Gores is giving the other the gift of freedom at a moment in their lifespan when they still have the ability, energy and vision for one final great act or far-flung adventure.

A sad, slow unraveling

Is it really possible for two people to travel the exact same road, grow at the exact same pace, and develop in the exact same way emotionally, spiritually and intellectually so they stay in sync for their entire lives?
