I worked for a particularly, shall we say, gruff publisher for a long time. Hoping to avoid being yelled at, for along time I kept my head down. I didn't speak up in meetings and variously tried to avoid being noticed by the Head Honcho.
Until it dawned on me that I was dealing with the same problems over and over. When I'd talk to other people about changing the status quo, they'd agree with me in private, but when we went into meetings, they'd fall right into line with the way things had always been done. And I had no one to blame but myself.
I learned that if I wanted things to change I needed to stand up and make my voice heard. I still got yelled at but I
felt better for being yelled at over trying to make a difference.
My biggest mistake was waiting to come out as transsexual until I was 55 years old.
My biggest happiness in life is my daughter, who would not be around if I had come out at an early age.
Mistakes can be our best friends.
I have made many mistakes. Did I learn from them? Absolutely. Some mistakes were imposed upon me such as poverty and a disfunctional family. Other times, I married the wrong person or chose the wrong path, trusted the wrong people. Thru all the pain, my mistakes have guided me to know what NOT to do. I'm sure I will make more mistakes but I do listen much more and try to learn from others.
Back in my younger days I worked for an up and coming web hosting company enjoying free employee web space so could create my own web site for personal use. Instead, I covertly ran a popular parody web site that very sarcastically poked fun at (and mentioned by name in its title) a very large provider of computer software. Hint, it rhymes with "Bike Grow Loft" headed by "Jill Bates".
It became so popular, in fact, a German television crew asked me to sit for an interview and discuss the site and its silly premise. So without thinking, I invited them to my workplace after hours for my 15 minutes of short lived fame.
Fast forward to one week later, word got out to management. I was taken to a room where numerous higher ups in suits plus my immediate boss explained that not only did I break numerous procedures and policy by allowing a film crew on premises, and that my web site broke the end user agreement, but also that Bike Grow Loft, Inc. was a partner with our company. I can't tell you how many papers I signed or how many apologies I made, but when it was all over I was lucky to still be working there. Mostly because my parody site made even the top managers laugh, and otherwise I was an exemplary employee. I simply took the site down and suffered a bit on my performance review that year.
So my first bit of advice is only use work equipment and resources for work related tasks, and my second bit of advice is when confronted with a mistake, admit to it, profusely apologize, cry a little, and beg for your next paycheck. But be sure to work hard in between major gaffes, of course.
I still have NO problem with anyone who might want to parody Jill Bates or any of the Blindows products on the market place -- just do so on your OWN web server if you feel so inclined!
I overcame both of my mistakes by my faith in Jesus Christ who gave me new life in Him. Fleeting happiness has been replaced with unspeakable joy. I graduated from college decades later and I divorced my husband. I've come to think more of myself than to be in a relationship with someone who has so little regard for himself and others.
1. I married my second husband - the cheat, liar, souless - ruined my financial status.
2. I got out of the Army, could have retired if I had stayed in.
3. Haven't finished my college degree work, hope to get back to it.
4. Still married to second soon to be ex husband.
biggest mistake for my family..i was only 9 so i had no say so...leaving Spain and coming here in 1967....next to that was..leaving New York and coming to Florida in 1970...those two signed ,sealed and delivered it.
Biggest, recent mistakes: believing that Vincent Gray knew much about schools and not knowing that he planned to hire back ineffective teachers. Also, believing that good DCPS teachers had any intention of allowing the identification and termination of ineffective teachers.
when an average person submits their resume for a job...
the hr department of the company receiving the resume submits the resume to a resume processing company...
this is also a database with other information on you like if you had problems with a previous employer...
so if they get a red flag...
you don't get hired...
you have been blacklisted...
and it's so decentralized that it's hard to get a handle on who's who...
congress could fix it by bringing these companies under the same rules as the fair credit reporting act...
how many wonder why no one responds to your resume...
well, this is why...

Biggest mistake ever, dealing with American banks.
BofA, Wells Fargo, Wachovia, recently got caught laundering drug cartel money in Mexico.
They have institutionalized theft and gotten away with it as law enforcement does not prosecute their takings, it protects them.
Avoid them.
