Keep on trucking

I am working from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and then end up working on paperwork for the rest of the evening. Sigh.

I need more time!

All I do these days is wake up, leave the house, go to work and come home to sleep.

Dangerous deployments

I worked in a military warehouse which was protected by 50-caliber machine gun nests that were designed to take out vehicles that don't stop.

Busy in the federal space

I'm trying to get security clearance, which means I would be pretty much set for a great IT job now that there is less competition in the market.

I'm running my office NFL pool and it feels like a full time job.

Sales don't seem so bad

I can tell you right now, I thought twice about being on the technological side of the game and I even thought twice about being in music.

Sick as a dog

It was Columbus day and I was off from my job at my network engineering job sick as a dog. The next day, I was unable to even make it out of bed.

I had a medieval weekend

I saw jousting and we wandered around getting drunk and playing little games here and there.

From getting demos ready for customers last minute, to interviewing new candidates, I have been working at my network engineering job nonstop.

Blast from the past

This past Friday, our former drummer Jason came by the practice space. We had a great time playing together again.

A tough new instrument

I spent a recent afternoon at guitar maker Paul Reed Smith's Experience PRS open house, where I met such music industry notables as Ricky Skaggs and Davey Knowles.

Taking a well-deserved rest

It is exhausting to play day in and day out. I know that we would be playing every day if we were on tour, but then we wouldn't be working our day jobs, too.

Hoping to go viral on YouTube

I think we should do a goofy video to go along with our upcoming recording. I think it would go viral on YouTube.

Image is everything

We are leaning towards being ourselves for our image--college-educated white boys from suburbia with very little fashion sense, but an unexpectedly funky sound.

Taking the band in a new direction

We really need to focus on writing new music and getting a new CD out. Our sound has changed quite a bit over the past year and we have new songs that need to be recorded.

We're not in Kansas anymore

I was trying to enter a building which was the site of a mock bomb threat. They were looking for suspicious characters and I come walking up with a heavy laptop case.

The request line is closed

Another one bites the dust

Think of our ex-band member as the T.O. of music. He is an amazing sax player just like T.O. is an amazing wide receiver. The problem lies in the drama that he creates.

Expense it

I never got a chance to go to the beach in Virginia Beach because I worked the whole time.

Busy at the beach

Most of my weekdays have been monotonous since I came down here to Virginia Beach to work.

Working on the beach

My network engineering job is sending me to teach people in the navy how to use their phones. It will be very boring and repetitive.

Don't let me be like them

They put on a great show, but it seems as though it is the same almost everywhere they go. They made the same jokes and played a lot of the same songs.

Sun burnt for Victor Wooten

My manager and I went to see Victor Wooten at an outside workshop. It was 75 degrees and sunny, but we didn't bring sunscreen. By the time Victor was done, so were we.

Anticipating Victor Wooten

The only thing I have seen that is as impressive as Victor Wooten playing the bass guitar is the one-armed bassist on YouTube.

Now that he is working hard to play better, so am I. I have been taking lessons with Freddie Louden, the bass player for the Kelly Bell Band.

ISO a manager

We met Mike at Best Buy when he came in to buy some guitar books and I asked him if he liked to support local music. He said he did and I sold him one of our CDs.

To busy to blog

I've had too much to do to blog with projects at my network engineering job, working at Best Buy and moving into my new apartment in Annapolis; I've had no time to blog.

An important project at work

At the network engineering company where I work, I have been helping to renew a major contract vehicle. It's REALLY fun stuff! Hopefully my sarcasm came through there.

A change in majors

Now that I have been dealing with RF signals and wireless communications, I'm tempted to change my major to electrical engineering because of the recording equipment.

In my studio, I'm using cheaper technology than that at the recording studio. I have to learn where all of the short cuts are in this new software.

Splurging to build a studio

I've bought quite bit of musical gear lately. My goal with all this is to be able to record everything at home and only have to utilize a real studio for mastering.

Impulse buying for myself

Best Buy wanted to get rid of it so bad that the price was eventually dropped to $1150. That's a good 68% off the regular price. I couldn't pass up on this deal.

My supervisors were impressed that I passed my CCNP certification. I even got a little bonus. I hope they don't expect that bonus to keep me from asking for a raise.

A new place to lay my head

The realtor found us a pimp spot, a two-bedroom condo with two baths about two minutes from downtown Annapolis. I'm excited that we have a place to bring people.

I can't name that tune

I kept playing and eventually it started to sound like a Beatles' song. I played it for virtually everyone at Best Buy that night, but no one knew what it was.

Technology for band practice

I think it would be awesome if band members could practice with one another from different locations, but feel as if they were in the same room.

"Lost" time

I'm keeping this blog short. I I have to be at my network engineering job by 6:30 a.m. and I have to catch up on the other night's episode of "Lost."

One night when we were drunk, we decided to see who would be the best at switching instruments. It was fun, but we were pretty hammered, so I doubt it sounded good.

Bowling for business

We stuffed ourselves, then went started up an old tradition that D.J. and I used to do a lot. We held our business meeting at the bowling alley. I scored a 191, my best ever!

Computer geek with problems

The only problem, is that I have so much saved data on my computer that I can't, or I guess I should say I don't want to do a clean install. This would wipe my hard drive along with all the data and install Windows fresh.

By Jeff Kuehn | March 4, 2010; 06:03 AM ET | Comments (0)

Expanding our music network

Hopefully, D.J. and I can put together a huge band with a dozen or so instruments. That would really help the music sound full.

Lesson learned

It ended up costing me almost $200 to replace the two front tires. I wish they would have aligned my car as well, since it pulls to the right, but I had the work done at a place that doesn't do that. I have learned my lesson, I guess.

Certifying my future

It's one thing to do nothing for 15 to 20 hours a day and get paid for it, but when you have to actually think, that's draining. My brain feels like mush, yet I still have two more certification exams to study for and take.

Winter Olympics, we have a problem

To top it all off with the winter games, we have to watch them in the winter. I'm sure I would be much more entertained if I could walk outside after watching the bob sled race to a sunny 75 degrees. If I were in San Diego, I would probably be glued to my TV.

More on the voice toy

One of the biggest problems our band has is that D.J. can't sing a note. This hardware allows me to make up for that by simulating someone singing harmonies.

Resting up to make that money

I need to be rested so I can get up and work another 13 hours tomorrow. Gotta make that money!

Press kits on a shoestring budget

We came up with the idea to get regular folders from Staples or Office Depot and put some kind of sticker on the front. This sticker can have our band's name on it and maybe our contact info. It will look cool and professional all at the same time.

By Jeff Kuehn | February 16, 2010; 02:00 PM ET | Comments (0)

I want fame and fortune, not snow

I want to play music, make boat loads of money doing it and party/sleep with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Is that too much to ask? I could be walking around Annapolis handing out our press kits and trying to get new gigs. Instead, I am stuck inside.

Internet, never leave me again

If the Internet were a real object, I would lock it in my basement with chains and never let it out of my sight. I don't want to be without it ever again. I can live without lights or heat or even television, but life without the Internet, that is just barbaric and cruel.

Another cert to add to my list

I have to get what is called the Cisco Sales Expert certification, or CSE. This is like going back through high school algebra after you already have a degree in theoretical mathematics.

Another snow-related hassle

Because I could not see and feared crashing into something, I had to drive home with my head stuck half way out the window while the snow came flying in on me.

Snow, snow go away

I was supposed to take it tomorrow, but then I found out we are supposed to have more snow. Since we are probably going to get snowed in again, too, I decided to postpone the exam to next Monday.

My snowy prison

For some reason, I enjoyed being locked away in my snowy prison for most of the past three days. With the exception of going over to my friend's house to see the Super Bowl Sunday, I stayed in.

Should I save or have fun?

Staying where I am will help me to save, but it will take some time. Or, I could struggle for the next couple of months by moving in with my buddy at his pimp apartment. That would be more fun.

Check out my band's bio

Maybe Not Even is a blues-rock band from Annapolis, Maryland. Since their inception, the group has included me, Jeff K, on vocals and lead rhythm guitar, and D.J. Rocco, on lead guitar.

I wanna be viral

One day, D.J. came up with this goofy little chord progression on the guitar. We called the song "Drama (in the Restaurant Business)." I figured it would be a good idea to make a music video of the song. It can be campy, just like the song.

Got to make that money

A recent night was a great example. It was almost 2:00 a.m. and I was blogging after performing.

Calling the cops is just plain rude

The cops knocked as we finished one of our songs. They asked us to be quiet, then told us that the music sounded good! They had apparently been standing outside listening to us play.

Blogging while sick

I slept for two hours before I realized that I didn't do the four blogs I promised my editor that I would do.

A night out with what's her name

In the end, I had a great time and though I didn't get a phone number from any of them, I did tell them about my blog. Maybe they are reading it right now to see what their competition, the good old Washington Post is doing?

Contracts, lawyers and headaches

I'm in a situation that requires me to defend myself so that I won't lose out on a lot of money.

Getting drunk on the cheap

Open mic nights give you the opportunity to see the up and coming bands. But Tuesday night sucked. I don't want to sound cocky, but I can't help but criticize other artists when I go to these things.

Technical difficulties

I am taking the suggestion of my editor and keeping these next two blogs short so that I can spend the rest of my time studying for final exams, if I ever start studying.

Fingers crossed to be valedictorian

I have a 69 percent going into the final. Luckily that is in the upper percentile and the professor grades on a curve. I need to get an A so that I can graduate with a 4.0 grade point average. I would love to be named valedictorian

Not a public service announcement

I don't know how this went from me talking about getting a new bassist to me ranting about achieving goals, so I apologize. I feel like I should say something about drugs. You know, "This egg is Lisa's brain, then she did drugs. Now, I'm smashing into her brain with a frying pan because that's what drugs do!"

I hope I don't wake up in Boston

I have never called out sick from work. There was that time I went with friends to see the Orioles play the Red Sox in Boston. We left late to come back. I called the restaurant and told them I got drunk and woke up in Boston.

Soup for the stressed-out soul

I had heard for years that chicken soup helped you feel better when you were sick. I wondered if this had any merit, so I decided to check it out. It didn't take me long to find my answer.

Booze, music don't always mix

Fortunately, I was able to remember everything I did, so I wasn't suffering from any gaps in my memory. But I still felt awful.

Uninspired on video story line

I should have realized that the scenes that I drew wouldn't be that good. But it probably doesn't matter how good it looks, as long as the idea is captured for what I want the video shot to look like.

Encounters on the road to success

One of the coolest guys we've met so far is Josh. We randomly met him at Cocoa Lane during an open mic performance. He played the violin. We played a set together. We called ourselves "Dixie Normous." That was his idea.

On Spielberg's heels

Many bands use the Zooms to record themselves practicing. Others use it to record legal sessions or presentations. I have even seen people using them as microphones in place of their camera microphones so that they can get a better quality sound for their videos. Which brings me to my main point. This Zoom also records video.

Doing double duty

I have been scrambling to complete my semester projects. Like most things, I just kept putting it off. In one class, I have to develop a security policy for a fictitious company. The project is 50 pages long. Oh, and it's due on Monday.

Welcoming back a close friend

Ultimately Jason joined the marines, while D.J. and I formed the band Maybe Not Even. While Jason was stationed in California, he met a girl and got married. He is planning on returning home next year. I can't wait for him to move back.

Playing at work

I think that is why I love performing music so much. When I have had a long day and I feel like strangling someone, I just come home and play my guitar and everything goes away. When I am playing on stage and people are singing every word that I sing, it is the most euphoric feeling ever.

Add television to my star

It's fascinating how much time and effort and how many resources are involved in making a television program.

Ideas come from everywhere

In our bathroom by the gym and engineers' desks, the reading materials focused on men's health and technology. On the sales/executives' side of the building, there were Forbes and Fortune magazines.

In search of the Brad Pitt in me

If I can get to my Brad Pitt-esque body back that I had in high school, then we could really sell some CDs.

I just had sex with a celebrity

If I had started this article with the sentence, "I just had sex with a celebrity!" and then went on to detail how I accomplished this awesome task, you would have been more inclined to read it than if I had titled it, "Titles: An Observation Of the Impact of Titles on Consumer Spending."

As long as I get mine, we're cool

I work part time for a company as a network engineer and am finishing up an associate degree in information security, so you know I have some nerd in me.

Wanted: bassist ISO band

Everyone says that the most difficult thing to do in a band is to find a good bassist.

Living for my fantasy

After this weekend, I am beginning to question whether fantasy football is the best leisure activity for me.

Video killed the radio star

I might just give up on computers altogether and go into the music video business.

Eat, drink and be merry!

You don't see total strangers drinking and partying and dancing like gypsies with one another anymore, except at a Dave concert. It's as if Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix and Hunter S. Thompson have all channeled their auras through Dave's music.

Censorship? That's for Quakers!

I realized that with such things as the Internet and satellite radio, I had completely forgotten about censorship and that it still even exists.
