Whatever works

Q: University of Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams, who was just voted ACC Coach of the Year, gets so frenzied during games that he sweats through his suits. How does that arm-waving, finger-jabbing style contribute to his team's success? And why do other successful coaches pride themselves on their composure?

Every leader has his own style of leading their team and coaching them to success. I don't think any one style is more appropriate than the other.

Coach Gary Williams uses an in-your-face approach and emotion to get his team to produce results, whereas other coaches act differently and get the same results.

As long as the team understands the coach's style, it will be productive. Obviously, Williams would not be named the coach of the year if his team was not winning. His style is working for his team.

Whether in diplomacy, business or personal life, we all coach and get results differently. Some of us remain very calm under stress and others show emotions freely. We are all right as long as we get a winning result.

Coaches are not exceptional human beings. They should have to conduct themselves with the professionalism we require in other arenas. They are supposed to be teaching and modeling good sportsmanship. Those who rant, I find their conduct appalling.

Say what you want about Gary Williams, you would never want to play one of his teams. They don't always play pretty. They usually don't. But they always play hard. And they never give up. You might not like his style, but you have to respect the results. And after the game, you will never hear anyone smarter about the sport.

Williams is also educating his students, demonstrating to them that if you consistently lose your temper and yell at people, it's okay as long as you win games. If you don't, or if you're not a coach, you're just called a jerk.
