Knowing when to go
Q: Why has Oprah Winfrey been so successful as a TV talk-show host? Does it make sense for her to end her syndicated talk show in 2011 when she's still dominating the daytime ratings? Can you imagine anyone replicating the following she's been able to build?
My mother-in-law gave me advice that I live by: Leave the party while you are still having fun. That means never overstaying your welcome, whether you are talking about a job, a visit to a friend's house or -- well -- a party. It preserves good memories and goodwill.
Oprah did a smart thing, and now she heads toward the next phase of her remarkably successful career.
