Going for It: Woman Warrior

Helping young artists prosper

After an incredibly sluggish first half the day, I had a phone call that totally turned things around.

I spoke with Bob, the marketing director of Authentik Artists, a Los Angeles-based company that helps independent artists with licensing, distribution and PR, among other things, whose enthusiasm about his company and the artists he works with was absolutely infectious!

I met Bob, Ariel from Cyber PR, and Brenden from Artist Data a few weeks ago at the CMJ Music Marathon, and was struck by their dedication to helping independent artists succeed.  One of the things I love about Bandsintown is that our company helps artists by offering a platform for fans to discover them and buy tickets to their gigs. I am always excited to meet and collaborate with people at other companies equally committed to artist success.

At the Future of Music Policy Summit in Washington D.C. last month, Ariel showed a slide with a pyramid illustrating that there are now five million artists on MySpace and the small percentage that are likely to achieve some level of success.

I suppose one could be depressed by that slide, but I personally find it awesome that there are five million artists with the audacity to go for it. I am encouraged that there are such smart, savvy and committed people out there creating tools to help them succeed.

Authentik Artists just released a great new podcast series with tips for artists and music industry insights. Check it out here.
