Even before the shopper stopper blizzard of 2009, retailers were seeing a dramatic shift in the buying habits of recession-battered consumers -- and scrambling to sell to it.
The recession has made dramatic changes in the way Americans are shopping this holiday season, and perhaps for years to come, and retailers are scrambling to understand the new psychology -- and sell to it. Today's shopper is practical. Forget buying simply to have the latest, flashiest or stylish item. Shoppers are buying to replace something that's worn out. Instead of indulging themselves, they're interested in helping others. They're buying items that help enhance time with their families. And they're buying only if they deem the price is right.
