Do you agree with the censure of Marion Barry?

Twelve members of the D.C. council have voted to censure Marion Barry and refer public corruption allegations against him to the U.S. attorney's office -- actions that could severely reduce his authority and extend his legal troubles. Follow the story as it develops.

Censure is too good. Barry should have been asked to step down.

How did Mr Barry even become a member of D.C. Counsil? The last time he was in the paper .. He was in his underwear holding a crack pipe in his mouth !!!!!! Some people go to jail for that and I guess others are elected to work in office ....
???????

Look around you at Government jobs and you will see the different class of people that opt for the jobs of life .No criteria,no supervision. We have a gov office in our town that has employed all the obese, lazy, lesbians and gay men in town.It is like a club where they dont care about outsiders.

I don't care if you even suspend his sentence, but please convict him of a felony so that he can't run for office anymore. He thumbs his nose at the rules and feels he is above the law... again and again and again...

This is not the Marion Barry I remember. From the author of bus boycotts and equality to political whipping post. What does this say about term limits :)

Let the politician who hasn't helped their own choice of people cast the first stone. This is just another way to make a black man look the culprit. Did we forget about the Bush years already?

Enough is enough...really! I've been one to give Barry the benefit of the doubt many times over, but this is the straw that broke the camel's back. Yes, he did get caught with a crack pipe, but I am one who believes in forgiveness and redemption especially when one suffers from a sickness...crack addiction is a sickness. But Barry just seems to be bent on bringing shame on himself and D.C.; especially Ward 8. When does it stop? When will he begin to stop putting his own lustful desires over the best interest of D.C. and Ward 8. His actions clearly show that it's all about him; I'm convinced that he is using the citizens of Ward 8 and believe that they are too stupid to know better. He has clearly taken their kindness for weakness. He deserves whatever comes at him. And that thing that he called his girlfriend...what professional man deals with something like that? Standing in the Council Chamber wispering to him like she's in his bedroom...shame on her and shame on him too! I'm sure she thought she had it going on--NOT!

Signed,

Someone who really cared about this man and hoped that he would turn his life around and show the people that the citizens of Ward 8 were right--not so much!

1) how do you know they are lesbians or gay?
and
2) if obesity and laziness = homosexuality then 70% of the United States is homosexual. And the percentage is even worse for children!

In either case what does your comment have to do with an ex-mayor who is pathological and a poster boy for the Organization of arrogant officials?

Then I guess you are too young to remember the Marion Barry who got all cracked up in office. The one who had a penchant for using district funds to support a habit of drugs and women.

But wait, I guess if you remember the good things that he did before he was in office then you simply suffer from selective memory.

He is a waste; a basket case; a once potent force that has fallen ill by the lures of arrogance and lust and desire and greed. That does not, however, excuse his actions NOR allow him to serve in ANY capacity for the public.

He should be tossed away like the broken record he is.

If all politicians were held to the same standards as Mr. Barry, we would have a decidedly different country. The war in Iraq would not exist; The financial and housing markets would not have crashed;we wouldn't have a trillion $ plus budget deficit;the economy would be stable;we would not have the "Birthers", and we would have universal health care for each citizen. Since this is not remotely factual, let he who has "undefiled" hands cast the first stone(s). If you've already thrown your stone, take a look in the mirror and name what you see. Barry has done more to effect a positive change in society than most - lest we forget that he risked his life as a freedom rider in the 60's - where were you? He left a post-graduate program in chemistry to serve a cause. He chose to become a public servant because of his quest for equality for all people - he could have selfishly gone into the corporate world. Even if you are not a minority, you are enjoying the benefits of not being in the "Dark Ages" of pre 1960's. It sickens me to see him characterized as a buffoon, which couldn't be further from the truth.

The pipehead criminal former Mayor of DC still gets the kid gloves treatment by the newspaper of record in DC.

And these are the people who every day stand up on their pedestals and tell everyone else how to live.

This is long overdue. Mr. Barry has been allowed to get away with too many indiscretions for too long. While I believe the Marion Barry of the 1960s-early 80s was a good leader, he has merely become a buffoon. That is a sad epilogue for a man who once did the public, and his community, a great service.

mossmillennium you're a dumb@ss and a racist. Barry is the biggest political POS to ever walk the streets of D.C. He cares for no one but himself and his pals who line their pockets off of political favor. Then again maybe I shouldn't be so hard on mossmillennium since we can surely blame it on the fact that he is not thinking clearly due to breathing in all that methane gas from having his head so far up his posterior.......

Ms. Butler: The past does not absolve the sins of the present. Mr. Barry may have done great things back int he 60's but he ruined his own reputation with his repeated corrupt practices and public scandals. Others did not set him up. He controlled his own destiny and legacy. He no longer will be remembered for his civil rights accomplishments because in recent years he has exhibited nothing but contempt for non-African Americans, gays and women. He is a buffoon by his own actions. He did this to himself by himself.
