Should the FDA take some salt away?

The FDA is planning to put legal limits on the amount of salt in processed foods, a move it believes could save thousands of lives a year. Listen up you losers who are voting yes.... How much government intervention do you want in your lives?? And where does it stop?

The best thing for salt is better education, not forced regulation. If you want, reduce the sodium content of foods served at school.... but you cannot eliminate it entirely. Salt is also a preservative that keeps canned foods from going bad on store shelves or in our pantry at home.

I am much more concerned about high fructose corn syrup, chemical additives and aspartame (nutrasweet) than I am about SALT.

People have been eating salt for thousands of years!

This is somebody somewhere blowing smoke up my rear instead of tackling serious food issues! Bah!

Good grief where does it end?! Is some gubbermint nanny going to come to my house to feed me now and make sure I don't add salt to my food to replace the taste that the gubbermint took away? Or is the Gestapo just going to show up at my door and confiscate my salt supply? And where will we get the necessary iodine that we now get largely from salt? And how much is all this new regulation going to cost the taxpayer? All questions will go unanswered I am sure.

Yo, FDA. How about doing a better job at your current mandate to keep our food free of dangerous bacteria? Then, (maybe) you can move into areas such as this.

Interesting poll. A whopping 58% who want the government to manage the most miniscule aspects of what people eat.
Salt has been used for thousands of years.
It is not a poison.
But the liberals that post on here just want more control of everyone's life.
Time to take out the Dems, their insanity just seems to know no bounds.
BTW who is going to guarantee that if someone buys a product with low salt content but sprinkle on all the salt they want to make it taste good. Next thing they will come to our house and check are salt shakers........
Can't the Dems find something better to do, like protect Arizona from the criminal invasion from Mexico? The criminals may kill more Americans than a little salt will.

I'm really liberal on most issues and don't mind some government intervention here and there (I think health care is a great example of where government has the responsibility to provide for the health of its citizens).

But salt? Come on! The science isn't clear on this at all. And if you are healthy and exercise frequently, blood pressure and cholesterol are likely not a big deal. This is similar to the anti-MSG campaign. You know what the 'negative effects' of MSG are? Like 4% of the population gets headaches from large quantities of it.

I have to pay the medical bill for all these fat idiots when they turn 65, so go ahead, tax salt and soda. You already tax alcohol for the same reason, and I pay a lot towards that. If you are going to cost society $100,000 because you eat McDonalds and drink Pepsi your whole life, we have to get that money back somehow

I prefer less salt in my food. Less salt tasts better. I wish I could buy tomato juice or V8 juice with less salt. Adding potassium tastes dreadful.

KHLONG: There is a low sodium version of V-8.

If that product still has too much salt for your tastes, buy a blender and make your own juice. It's not that hard.

This salt business is just the nose under the tent. Sugar will be next. Soon, fat content of meat. Next, mandatory yearly weigh ins. It's all coming unless we do something about it.

Vote in 2010, and vote even more in 2012.

Is the government your mother? Did it give you life? Raise you? Educate you? I didn't think so. In that case, it should continue to keep its hands off your food, guns, rights, homes, banks, businesses, etc. The government has a limited role. It is not your mother. You take care of you, and you watch the government like a hawk to make sure people who have socialist opinions do not get elected to take away your freedoms. That is the duty of the American People. Go live in Europe for a year, (I suggest Greece), if you want to experience where our government is taking us. It can happen.

High blood pressure and heart disease are a big problem in this country. Why would anyone object to making it easier to choose a low salt diet?

This is moronic. Anyone who really knows how to cook knows that putting 1/2 teasp. of salt COOKED INTO pasta, potatoes, sauces, or anything, is all the salt needed to make it tasty. But if you have bland, tasteless food cooked without salt, you'll be using the salt shaker to add salt to every bite and it amounts to more in one serving than in the whole pot.

What's next? I'd say it's allowing each person 30 squares of single ply toilet paper per month. And then it will be controlling your electronic thermostat in your house remotely from the street (already done in Ohio, experimentally), so that the temperature in your house will be 60 if you're lucky in the winter.

I didn't know salt was a condiment used in tea.

For those of you who slavishly follow Glen Beck, try using your heads for a second.

This is not a conservative issue or a liberal issue, this is a health issue.

A mountain of research has shown that there are substances in food, like salt, fat and even artificial sweeteners, that are addictive. Put very simply, food companies have addicted us to salt.

In one 2007 study, in fact, when rats were given the choice between water laced with saccharin and water laced with cocaine, 94% of them chose the artificially sweetened water.

The government has to step in when food companies, tobacco companies and banks start harming people for profit.

If they've got you addicted to something, what's to stop them from profiting if not the government and the rule of law?

And before you try to give me any free market crap about people being able to force companies to make healthier foods if they don't buy the unhealthy ones... let's ask some smokers with lung cancer how well that strategy worked for them.

And you know what? It is a government concern when social security, Medicare or Medicaid has to pay for early heart attacks or strokes. That comes out of all of our pockets.

Is it surprising that an administration that wants to impose its will into your health care would want to tell you what to eat also? This idiotic administration NEVER ceases to amaze me with their stupidity & arrogance.

We ALREADY have access to reduced salt products on the grocery store shelves! We’re perfectly capable of purchasing it if we are concerned about our salt intake. If our 'glorious leader' is concerned about what Americans EAT why not make ALL our food SAFE to consume by using some of that 'stimulus' money to employ more people to check food for contaminates and virus's BEFORE they go to market? Instead of elevating a minnow to higher status than U.S. citizens why not start letting the water flow again in the western states so they can start producing food for us to eat? Instead we buy so much of it from countries that don't care to regulate the food they export to the U.S.

But no…..let’s worry about how much salt is in the can instead……SURE.

Hooray!!! I've been on a "low-salt" diet (sic) for about 3 years now. With constant vigilance & limiting processed foods, the best I can manage is what I feel is a moderate salt level since a TIA a few years ago. It is extremely difficult even to reach that level. The food industry has accustomed Americans to heavily salted food. Many of us will be healthier without all that added salt. The rest who want more can easily lift the ubiquitous salt shaker.

We should look first at the fructose in processed foods, then take a big look at the chemical saturated fields that grow our grain and the chemicals shot into our meat, cows to make them give more milk, "more money that way of course", and then the antibiotics in the cows to get rid of the pus in the milk caused from the growth hormone given them to make more milk, then pumped full of antibiotics to get rid of the pus in the milk. Lets look at the whole picture instead of picking out one thing in a frenzy to fix the messed up world we live in. United States, we are not a free country; we are a country ate up with greed. God help us and our children and grandchildren.
