Dr. Laura to end show: Right decision?

Laura Schlessinger, the blunt-spoken, sometimes controversial radio talk-show host whose racially charged comments drew widespread condemnation last week, said Tuesday that she will end her radio career at the end of the year. Read the full article.

Really, she should never have had a show to begin with. She's not a Doctor!

She has no worries about future employment.
The GOP has shown there is always a place for fascist bimbos.

Thank you for your service, Dr. Laura!! Don't let the pervs and the p.c. pinheads get you down!

Posted by: thebump | August 18, 2010 11:16 AM

Should have made that decision a long time ago... vicious crone...

Posted by: LABC | August 18, 2010 11:22 AM

Frankly, I can't stand the woman and thought her show had been canceled long ago. The problem with this issue is that blacks use the "N" word all the time and when a white person uses it, not as an insult but for another reason, they get all defensive about it. I agree there's a difference between a black using it and a white using it, but there's also a difference in intent when a white uses it.

I'm surprised she's quitting. I thought she was tougher than that.

Posted by: steveinva | August 18, 2010 11:23 AM

"Dr" Laura, who isn't a doctor, is a vicious, racist, judgmental hypocrite and anyone who takes her free advice is getting good value for their money.

Posted by: fingersfly | August 18, 2010 11:26 AM

It's not like she's ending her career as a pundit. If anything, this may have been planned all along. Casual use of the N word, taking offense at the outrage, blaming the liberal media (of course). I would be suprised if she doesn't have an hour long program on Fox within weeks.

Posted by: jbanks979 | August 18, 2010 11:27 AM

Dr. who???

Posted by: FlyersFan27 | August 18, 2010 11:27 AM

She had a show?

Posted by: djmolter | August 18, 2010 11:28 AM

She is a serial homewrecker and a homewrecker with no qualifications to advise or scold others on moral issues.

Posted by: dricks | August 18, 2010 11:29 AM

Gee's where's Bill Balance to set the story straight!

Posted by: knjincvc | August 18, 2010 11:30 AM

It's clear that Dr Laura doesn't understand how the 1st Amendment of our Constitution works. It gives us the right to free speech so that we cannot be persecuted by our govt.
But if you make racist and stupid comments over the public airwaves then don't be shocked if there is a public backlash. But set aside the "n" word she used, her advice to the caller was just plain wrong.

Posted by: cwpeltzer | August 18, 2010 11:33 AM

Why would a white person feel the need to say N*gger? There is only one answer to thay question. Furthermore, when black people say this word they're saying it to other black people. Again I ask why do white people think it's okay to say this word, to black people?

Posted by: ackridgek | August 18, 2010 11:35 AM

She probably already has a cable show lined up with Fox.

Posted by: elle330033 | August 18, 2010 11:40 AM

Wondering if this is just another cheap publicity stunt by this self-righteous hypocrite to boost her failing ratings. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she turned up with her own show on Faux News, as others have suggested. "Doctor" indeed. Dr. Poison would be apt for all the nastiness she's spewed over the years. She's "Ask Amy" for masochists,

Posted by: hlchappell | August 18, 2010 11:42 AM

Bye racist. She'll join the rest of them on FOX.

The main issue is the caller she said it to. The caller let her know multiple times she was offended by the word, but the good "Dr." kept on going with it, and the bad advice.

Posted by: cnewso01 | August 18, 2010 11:51 AM

who cares if it's the right choice? right choice for whom? she's gone and hip hip hooray for that.

Posted by: frieda406 | August 18, 2010 12:03 PM

Goodbye and good riddance.

But I have a sense that this Right Wingnut has actually at some level just DELIBERATELY pulled the rope to deploy the emergency chute by way of making a "take this job and shove it" statement on her departure. (Did she also grab a couple of beers on the way out??)

Now --- if Limbaugh would just do likewise!!

Posted by: BirdsAbound | August 18, 2010 12:06 PM

Garbage shows like her show only inflame a very neive society. Is it an offensive word, ABSOLUTELY. Blacks people using the word to other blacks is STUPID, white people using the word towards blacks is DANGEROUS. That's why is just bugs me that young black males call each other the term and use the term in front of young white males. Do you hear young white males calling themselves HONKY!!! Not at all. Young black males in this society are MUCH different than when I grew up, I'm 45. Wearing TWO earrings like girls that is GAYISH. ARE blacks still sensitive to the word, YES. There is no desenstizing the word. It's meaning is negative and demeaning and if young black males knew their history, they would not be quick to use the word.

Posted by: common2 | August 18, 2010 12:08 PM

She figured out that all she had to do was spout enough racist, ignorant garbage long enough and eventually she'd be given her own show on Fox.

Posted by: KROVE1 | August 18, 2010 12:12 PM

She never should have had a show to begin with, pretending that the "Dr." in her title was based on some kind of psychological degree. She was no doctor. She had a glorified degree in P.E.

Posted by: uh_huhh | August 18, 2010 12:13 PM

This poll has yes/no/not sure but it doesn't have "none of the above". Saying "no" implies that she should have kept the stupid show.

You can disagree with the posited duality of the poll without being unsure about it.

The right decision of course would have been to check herself into a psychiatric hospital.

Posted by: alarico | August 18, 2010 12:26 PM

@ common2 12:08PM

I'm glad you have such a good grasp on the sensitivities of the "n" word. Next perhaps you can work on your use of the word "gay".

Wow, I am sure most of the folks commenting here never listened to her full show over the years. But yet, you are all full of opinion and vitriol...and very judgmental. (To be honest, I didn't even realize that Dr. Laura still had a show...she is so '90s.) Anyway, I am not sure how Dr. Laura or anyone else on the radio effects your lives so much that you need to be so angry. Maybe you should all go back to work or start looking for a job rather than complaining about a person who had little, if any, effect on society in general.

Posted by: njoebott | August 18, 2010 12:31 PM

I don't listen to her program, but have heard some of her most unctuous and controversial statements. Nothing that I have heard was patently offensive. I have heard far worse from other broadcasters, so I do believe that she has every right to continue to broadcast her show just as her hypersensitive detractors have every right to boycott her advertisers.

I am surprised that she caved so easily and decided not to push for a renewal of her contract.

As for the childish comments that Laura Schlessinger is not a doctor, she holds a Ph.D. in physiology from Columbia University. She has certainly earned the "Doctor" title regardless of whether her speech is disagreeable.

Posted by: Jeff_in_DC | August 18, 2010 12:32 PM

@ Jeff in DC

In the same sense that an opthalmologist should perform open-heart surgery, yes, "Dr." Laura is fully qualified to do this show.

Posted by: spunkydawg1 | August 18, 2010 12:39 PM

Paraphrasing Yoko Ono, Dr L is the nigger of the world.

Posted by: Major_Variola_ret | August 18, 2010 12:46 PM

i've listened to her show plenty of times because the area i happen to be driving in didn't provide many other choices. she practically drips BS to the callers, give bad advice, doesn't listen etc etc.

as for white vs black use of the n word......the problem is that there is no way to interpret what a white person really means when they say it. humand can't mind read yet (thank god for that or i'd be in real trouble)

Posted by: nall92 | August 18, 2010 12:47 PM

It's Dr. Laura's decision to quit therefore it must be the right decision. She has the right to make any decision she wants.

I do find it ironic that she can't seem to take the heat after all her years of giving people the harsh, unvarnished, Dr. Laura treatment.

Posted by: hemisphere | August 18, 2010 12:48 PM

You know what i dont much care for her, however i agree what she said about the 1st amendment rights, i am so tired of people taking offense of the N word when black use it all the time, i am so tired of african americans always taking offense to the word because of Slavery GET Over it already that was over 200 years ago and STicks and stones...that has nothing to do to who you are now...yes sometimes people use that word to be derogatory but like i said if you have strong personality know who you are is just a word for goodness sakes...if black can be nasty to whites and pretty much can get away with it it does not always mean when some whites use it that they are automatically racists..this is a country that is based on free speach as long as no one is getting harm by them then why all the fuss.? anyways....good luck to her...only listened to her maybe 2 times in my lifetime and like i said dont care for her that much..but she deserves to have a job like anybody else..lots of Holier than well you all know the rest people on this forum

Posted by: spanishguy | August 18, 2010 12:49 PM

Please, she is not quitting because of controversy. She is quitting because her ratings are plunging and a lot of her sponsors have jumped ship. The only reason she was on the air in the first place is that she made money for radio stations. She's old news and will probably be replaced by someone even more extreme, if you can imagine what that would look like.

Posted by: tboyer33 | August 18, 2010 12:50 PM

So long and bad luck

Posted by: smithking1 | August 18, 2010 12:53 PM

The world is certainly better off without her shrill drivel, but she's doing it, as always, for a bad reason. She's just no good.

Posted by: morphex | August 18, 2010 12:57 PM

Laura is a right wing hatemonger who, like others of that ilk on the radio, gets paid to repeat to the right wing the same opinions they already hold. Her job is to validate the fear and hate of the right wing by spewing it out over the airwaves. She has never shown the slightest indication of being receptive to any opinion on any issue other than the opinions she gets paid to repeat. Since there are dozens of others just like her on the radio, the end of her show is about as sad as the end of one of the 50 different brands of cornflakes.

She should have quit years ago.

The only people that would agree are the ones too afraid to have a discussion about the subject. This is the typical LIB response. Stick your head in the sand.....

Posted by: askgees | August 18, 2010 1:01 PM

I used to listen to Dr. Laura on long interstate drives. She advised callers who had difficult family, relationship or growing-up problems, often quite moving situations. Dr. Laura managed her callers, kept them focused and attentative to what she was asking or couselling, by being quite direct and abrupt, at times bordering on harshness or rudeness. This could be grating to the listener, like me, but it was effective and rarely alienated or disconcerted the caller.

I will always have a soft spot and high regard for her, while being quite sure she has her own problems, because she was insightful, smart, concerned and seemed to me quite often actually to help people who called, people with real trouble. That surely can't be easy. On top of training, discipline, experience and intelligence, I think it must require a gift. I believe she must have done more real good in her life than all the commenters here put together, including me.

Forget about the n-word nonsense. Let's all grow up.

Posted by: Roytex | August 18, 2010 1:05 PM

I watched Dr. Laura last night on Larry King live where she was saying she was quitting so she could enjoy her First Amendment rights. Who did she think she was kidding? Really. She quit because she shot off her arrogant "know it all" mouth trying to be cute and clever at the expense of one of her listeners. It backfired. Her comment, to her listener, was ignorant at best, racial at worst.

What Dr. Laura doesn't get is that most Americans do not listen to her so when her comment was braodcast to the world at large they heard it. They didn't hear her interpretation of her comment but they heard, quite clearly, her comment, raw and it wasn't a pretty picture.

So, Dr. Laura, it is with best wishes that we say a cheerful farewell to you and your "know it all" arrogant mouth.

Posted by: rannrann | August 18, 2010 1:06 PM

The real big problem with all this is that she was right. That is why she rankles so many liberals.

Posted by: rob1662 | August 18, 2010 1:08 PM

I don't care for her dogma, but I defend her right to use any word to make a point. In D.C., the illiterate blacks got up in arms about the word "niggardly" (meaning parsimonious) several years ago. Yet, these are the same individuals that continue to use the "N" word in everyday conversation.

Get another show Laura - and kick some more looney liberal butt.

Posted by: MoonDoggie | August 18, 2010 1:09 PM

Dr. Laura lost me years ago with what sounded to me like insensitivity towards callers who were clearly suffering. She seemed to be about aggrandizing herself, using callers as an excuse to spew her point of view, not helping people in distress.

When I found out later her "doctor" title had nothing to do with the helping professions, I realized she was even worse, a charlatan, faking people out.

That she would let something insensitive slip out on the air, not a surprise to me at all. She says she's retiring because she wants to "regain her first amendement right to freedom of speech"? She never lost it. Congress is making no law that says she can't say stupid hateful things in public. The PUBLIC, which also has the first amendment right ot say things, is saying, WE DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU SAY.

Dr. Laura is a whining loser, the sooner she's off the public airways the better, in my opinion.

Posted by: c-clef | August 18, 2010 1:16 PM

i'm glad she's gone. i detest loud, abrasive, confrontational, determinately ignorant people. they tend to wallow in their shallowness and condemn those who think things through to their logical conclusions. but the media love this type and i'm sure we'll see her on fox news as a commentator or lifestyles reporter.

Posted by: glenknowles | August 18, 2010 1:17 PM

I agree with moondoggie..all i can say a word is just a word....and if you take offense to it is because the meaning of the word in some way applies to you.....anyways done with comments...GOOD LUCK DR lAURA although she is not a dr....

Posted by: jpose | August 18, 2010 1:26 PM

Roytex, on the occasions when I listened to Dr. Laura, she did indeed manage her callers and keep them focused. But I never noticed her cutting off anyone while they were telling her how wonderful she was.

Posted by: angelas1 | August 18, 2010 1:33 PM

'Dr. Laura' is not a doctor, has no credentials of note, and is nothing more than another talking head with a foul mouth. I shall not miss her screeds. My Momma would be happy to wash out her mouth with soap!

Posted by: bloommarko4 | August 18, 2010 1:37 PM

Makes you wonder if sagging ratings were bringing the show to an end anyway. A nice publicity stunt of this sort will only gain her sympathy -- and maybe another job -- in certain circles.

Posted by: js_edit | August 18, 2010 1:37 PM

So if she wants to be a full time racist, she can always pursue a career at Cluster-Fox.. Murdoch clearly has the money to fun racist media so she would be a natural. beck's partner...

Posted by: rbaldwin2 | August 18, 2010 1:40 PM

It's so interesting that those who love her have forgotten that she herself said she was wrong about her comments yet on Larry King she claims her first amendment rights were being taken away. What a hypocrite. I listened to her a couple of times, and her keeping people "on topic" as someone earlier said, was demeaning and patronized them. She loved to blame the callers all the time. And if she is such a great pseudo"psychologist" why didn't she advise the caller to take it up with her disrespectful husband.

Posted by: aprilginger | August 18, 2010 1:44 PM

By planning to bow-out, Dr. Laura avoided an almost-inevitable boycott movement similar to what has driven Glenn Beck's sponsors away in droves. Beck only survives because Murdoch is willing to backfill lost revenues. Schlessinger doesn't have that luxury.

Posted by: fizzy1 | August 18, 2010 1:46 PM

Sooner or later most of these talk-show persons will eventually say something that they don't want to and will make a mistake. Nobody really listens to these people anyway, unless they are half-nuts and on their way to being totally lost in society.

Posted by: MikeV2 | August 18, 2010 1:53 PM

I hope Dr. Laura does not use public transportation becuase there are alot of folks that want to throw some monkey S### on her to see if she still wants to use the "N" word.

I challenge the good Dr. to use the word in front of any African Americans and see if Laura survives.

Posted by: B4DarkDC | August 18, 2010 1:54 PM

This "Dr." is an obnoxious hack and everything out of her mouth is a quack. She is no more a reliable dispenser of sound therapeutic "advice" than my dog. She knows as much about psychology as a pig knows about Sunday.

Posted by: seasail | August 18, 2010 1:56 PM

The woman states her first amendment rights are being infringed. Nothing is further from the truth. The first amendment deals with government interference with a person's right to free speech not a private company such as her sponsers.

Posted by: the1joncook | August 18, 2010 2:00 PM

Posted by: euroguy | August 18, 2010 2:02 PM

JEFF_IN_DC writes ------ "As for the childish comments that Laura Schlessinger is not a doctor, she holds a Ph.D. in physiology from Columbia University. She has certainly earned the "Doctor" title regardless of whether her speech is disagreeable."
No Jeff that's incorrect. For a non medical doctorate, it is considered improper to use the title Dr. outside of professional circles. That is largely ignored in the U.S. I suspect because of a lack of formality and knowledge of etiquette. But there's a more important issue here - doesn't it strike you as disingenuous for her throw her title around when it has nothing to do with the issues she publicly deals with? I find it inappropriate and even unethical for this woman to pass herself off as a "Dr." when discussing "moral" questions or whatever she wants to call essentially emotional issues. Does she give the caller the impression she is highly (as in having a doctoral level education) qualified to respond to those issues? Is she aware of it? Of course she is. This is hardly 'childish'. She is attempting to pass herself of as having qualifications she does not have. I find that disgusting.

Posted by: postaddict1 | August 18, 2010 2:10 PM

Would she have used the F word several times on air to make the point of a word that is used in daily life but radio and TV are fined over the same word?.
Or was she just channeling Lenny Bruce?.
I doubt this was an error in judgement, saying it once O.K. she made a mistake, to keep repeating the word was a planned event, or she simply loves the the word and could not stop saying it.
I am sure it's all about her Street cred. for Fox.

Posted by: JillCalifornia | August 18, 2010 2:10 PM

1. Her PhD was in physiology--not psychology, pyschotherpy or counseling. Her only qualification for giving advice was that she was an opinionated blowhard. I listened to her early on and found her to be a self-important, judgmental twit. So I stopped listening.

2. She didn't call anyone the "N-word". She was talking rhetorically and repeated the word trying to make a point about white people using the word--not as an insult directed at the caller. Unwise, ignorant and insensitive perhaps, but hardly racist. Seriously folks. Get over it.

3. She's a quitter. When the going gets tough, the judgmental blowhards get... well I guess they quit. Another reason she doesn't deserve a platform.

4. Good riddance. Not because of these recent comments, but because she should never have been on the air.

She had many worthwhile things to say over the years, and was well worth listening too on many occaisons. No one is perfect and in the end got too full of herself and crossed the line becoming too offensive. Bt lets face it, she often said things that needed to be said, much to the discomfort of those that disliked her for saying it. Now if only Nancy (dis)Grace would take her bleating off the air as well.

Posted by: jimarush | August 18, 2010 3:34 PM

I didn't think it was appropriate to quit when I first heard about this. But when you go and actually review the transcript, then yes, she sounds racist. Even her philosophical point, while not racist, is not actually a very good point.

Posted by: EvilOverlord | August 18, 2010 3:44 PM

As a liberal I do believe that no one, including Dr. Laura, should be forced to resign because of language. That said, this controversy is of her making and her decision to leave, was afterall her decision. I have no doubt we'll see a lot more of Dr. Laura on FoxNews or a featured guest on the Glenn Beck Show. This is after all her audience.

Posted by: logcabin1836 | August 18, 2010 3:44 PM

PS - no one is trampling on her first amendment rights. That would only happen if the GOVERNMENT tried to stop her from talking.

Posted by: EvilOverlord | August 18, 2010 3:45 PM

I could care less about the woman or her "advice" but why is it that no one ever seems to take Al Sharpton or any of the other "professionally offended" of his ilk to task for their speech? I think it's time to, in a word: just get over it. It's not a big deal.

Posted by: rcoveringdem | August 18, 2010 3:54 PM

Unlike many of you commenting, I've been a faithful listener of Dr. Laura's for 15 years and respect her greatly. She wouldn't have been on the air this long and been so popular if people did not love her advice. She has had too many #1 books to count and has probably saved many relationships with her wise advice. She will be missed by me and I hope to see more of her somewhere else in the future.

Posted by: Renee5 | August 18, 2010 3:54 PM

We will miss her "schtick". She was always good for a laugh or two. Can't imagine that too many folks took her corn seriously.

Posted by: gleneden1 | August 18, 2010 4:03 PM

The worst thing about what I heard in the broadcast that brought her down was her absolute inability to listen to the woman who phoned. She is clearly not qualified to give advice.

Posted by: calliefloor | August 18, 2010 4:04 PM

This is an example of political correctness gone wild. I do not agree with anything Dr. Laura said, and after listening to her program a few years ago felt she was obnoxious and made the decision to not listen to her again. Likewise, I find Keith Obermann on the left obnoxious, and Anne Coulter, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh on the right obnoxious and I also think Howard Stern is too vulgar for my tastes.

As a free person in a democracy I chose to listen to these commentators and made the choice that I found their views offensive, vulgar, and not worth listening to and made the choice to never again to turn on the television or radio to the station they are on. I do NOT, repeat NOT have the right to tell anyone else who they can or cannot listen to. There is a very thin line here between silencing those whose views we find offensive and expanding that to silence anyone we disagree with.

We have a choice in America to not listen to anyone whose views we find totally in contradiction to our own personal views and how we live our lives but we do NOT have the right to make that choice for others. As much as I cannot stand the talking heads at MSNBC and FOX News I fear the day when we start removing them from the airwaves. When we go down that road we are entering a very dangerous path that can consume and destroy the freedom of speech we hold so dear.

Too many people in our country want to remove those from our airwaves whose views they find unacceptable or simply those who politics are 360 degrees apart from their own person views. If they are so unacceptable then exercise your freedom and don't turn the radio station or t.v. on and listen to shows that upset you. We have hundreds of choices in programming we never had before in our country and perhaps it's time that rather than silence someone we disagree with we simply change the channel.

Posted by: mjkoch* | August 18, 2010 4:07 PM

She has exercised her right to make racist and inflammatory comments in a public space and now she'd crying because she has exposed herself for what she is and been called out for it. Good riddance, now only those of her ilk will be hearing from her distorted and venomous mind.

Posted by: nyc212 | August 18, 2010 4:10 PM

Doctor's are sworn to help their patients, and not attack them or antagonize them.

This doctor did both and probably caused the the caller to have more mental anxieties than she did before calling into the show looking for help and guidance.

What kind of "freaking" doctor is that... causing their patients to be more messed up physically or in the head mentally than they were before they began seeing them or talking to them.

She doesn't understand much about language and context. I have names for my sister; I can use those names and she understands the context. But neither she nor I want you to use those names. What's so hard to understand here? As for the First Amendment violation, what utter nonsense. As for her quitting, she's only doing it to get more play later on. What a self-centered, ignorant, and pathentic person.

Posted by: lstrauss2 | August 18, 2010 4:13 PM

"Doctor" Laura has been worth listening to. Now she's showing that she can dish it out, but can't take it. Sort of reminds me of Sarah Palin quitting because she couldn't stand the heat. Quitting and staying quiet are the best two things Schlesinger could do, but I suspect she won't stay quiet.

Posted by: wtyler | August 18, 2010 4:23 PM

Aargh - typo. I meant to write that she has NEVER been worth listening to.

Posted by: wtyler | August 18, 2010 4:24 PM

I'm sure the Tea Party will welcome her with open arms. Good riddance "Doctor"

Posted by: bozhogg | August 18, 2010 4:27 PM

Yes she is right to leave rather than take the villification being thrown at her. It is the new message in our political society: If you don't agree with what is being said - destroy the person personally instead of their arguement.

Now, if we could just get rid of "Oxycontin El Rushbo".

Posted by: ceefer66 | August 18, 2010 4:36 PM

I couldn't answer because I learned today that it wasn't her decision. She was fired, canned (and deservedly so). She's such a fake. Apologizes one day and the next claims she leaving for her 1st amendment rights. What baloney.

Posted by: davidlhanegraaf | August 18, 2010 4:36 PM

Did anyone who's commented here actually listen to the conversation in question? I doubt it, it was hardly a "rant" as touted in the media, and she was definitely not calling anyone the n word. I'm no fan of Dr Laura, haven't ever listened to her show, but this absolutely ridiculous. She's correct....hypersensitive indeed.

Posted by: reenee | August 18, 2010 4:46 PM

long overdue. Dr. Laura ran out of variations in her novelty act before 2001. That she is an opportunist hycocrite has been shown many times.
A fixture of AM radio, she finally became too foul to ignore.

Posted by: roboturkey | August 18, 2010 4:53 PM

Um...what she said was actually true.

Posted by: ravensfan20008 | August 18, 2010 5:05 PM

This clown has been dispensing bad advice for far too long. Whatever it takes to get her off the air, all the better. Your plumber is just as qualified as she is to give advice about relationships. She's totally untrained. Handing out advice the way she does is irresponsible and immoral. Leave it to the professionals, or next time just ask the guy with the pipe wrench fixing your leaking toilet about what to do.

Posted by: Candressuhmoose | August 18, 2010 5:09 PM

The reason I voted "No" is that "Dr." Laura should not have been allowed to make any decision -- she should have been off the air as of last Friday. How long did Don Imus last after his disgusting comment about the Rutgers b-ball team? IIRC, it was less than a week.

BTW, her First Amendment rights weren't violated -- the government isn't telling her to shut her pie hole -- it's her advertisers (or lack of advertisers).

Posted by: EAHarrison | August 18, 2010 5:20 PM

she jumped the shark when her TV show cratered and has been mailing in her hectoring harridan act on the radio for years.

Let's study that word: RADIO. Imagine a personality so marginal that the only media content they fill is on radio in 2010. yawners. I turned off a car radio playing her show in 1997. Recently I tuned her in again because of her N-word rant and fall-out and I was eager to catch her in another meltdown. It was the exact same act, a predictable scolding of some poor female listener who had a question about child-rearing.
So what's the fuss here? only the Olds listened to her anyway.

Posted by: roboturkey | August 18, 2010 5:23 PM

I dare her to show up at Glenn Beck's "I have a sceam" speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Posted by: zosodave | August 18, 2010 5:43 PM

What took her so long? She was a has-been fifteen years ago when she was on WMAL.

Posted by: ftapparo | August 18, 2010 5:52 PM

Who cares?

Posted by: jjedif | August 18, 2010 5:57 PM

Without her outburst and her appearence on Larry King, most people would have forgotten her existence.

Posted by: thebuckguy | August 18, 2010 6:03 PM

She is to a Dr. She has a PhD. In DC, I can tell you I hear black folk using the "N" word all the time. After the big snowstorms, for instance -- "These n------ are slippin' and slidin'! Yuk yuk yuk." Dr. Laura is right -- it is fine for them, but it should not be. We should use respectful terminology for each other.

Posted by: jethro1 | August 18, 2010 6:07 PM

"Dr" Laura ought to do something about that blackened back molar in the right side of her mouth.

Maybe a little more flossing and some Listerine?

Posted by: veerle1 | August 18, 2010 6:09 PM

Dr Laura holds a PhD, so she is a doctor.

Secondly, it sickens me to hear how younger people use the N-word. Some are clueless that the word is demeaning. Others know full well what the meaning is and even take it to mean 'I am above you/own you'.

Still, if we are going to respond in such an over-the-top manner to every "hate-charged" word, then we are playing directly into the hand of the haters. They want to divide us and we are picking up their baton and running with it.

It is time to drop the baton and stop losing our collective minds every time a hate charged word is uttered. I cannot change my genetics so go ahead and call me oreo or zebra or even the n-word, you will not get me to react. The reaction you will get is me standing my ground and keeping my temper, logical thinking, and tactfulness in line. For me to fly off the handle over what you say gives you power over me and allows you to see me as something less than equal to you. And THAT I will not stand silently for.

Posted by: skramsv | August 18, 2010 6:14 PM

chopin224 ..... get yourself a dictionary - your misuse of the word fascist defines your own lack of intellect.

Some of the same people who adored the late Senator Robert Byrd (D-W.Virginia) are Dr. Laura haters. They excused Byrd's use of the infamous "n" word. And he was a known RACIST!

zosodave ... what is a "sceam"?

Posted by: Hazmat77 | August 18, 2010 6:18 PM

Couldn't be happier about her quiting!!

Posted by: loiseisenberg | August 18, 2010 6:19 PM

steveinva ... how could YOU know every White person's INTENT when they use the "n" word?

Sorry to disabuse you of your self-importance, but the "n" word has had different meanings over the decades - some of which, even when used by Whites were NOT intended as racist.

You need to get beyond the minimal Democrat Party endorsed education you've had; learn to think for yourself.

Posted by: Hazmat77 | August 18, 2010 6:23 PM

Maybe now she will have enough time to get a real "MD" and not just a degree in Physiology. Only in America can a degree in Physiology be mistaken for a degree in Psychology or Psychiatry.

As for the N-word controversy: women call one another the b-word often but if I start using it, I'll be rightfully called a sexist. And if I try to hide behind my First Amendment rights, I'm not only a sexist but a stupid one at that.

Posted by: DrSubtle | August 18, 2010 6:52 PM

@HAZMAT who said, "Sorry to disabuse you of your self-importance, but the "n" word has had different meanings over the decades - some of which, even when used by Whites were NOT intended as racist."

What a lame, idiotic explanation that ignores the context of a few centuries of slavery and Jim Crow laws that promoted the utter dehumanization of human beings! I'd like to hear the so-called "Dr" Laura start racially charged words for Jews, Catholics, etc. before she steps all over a word that is like a nuclear bomb given the history of the United States. If "Dr" Laura and you don't understand the historical significance of this word, you should both move to Germany and attack Jews now for being "hypersensitive."

We all need to be compassionate and not run our mouths. But "Dr" Laura especially should be more so. She let her mother die alone with her body decomposing for 2 months before being discovered. Read her biography on Wikipedia and other places.

Posted by: DrSubtle | August 18, 2010 6:59 PM

What kind of an humiliation-craving idiot do you have to be to call up this clueless right-wing quack for "advice" anyway?

Posted by: wilder5121 | August 18, 2010 6:59 PM

These radio personalities are paid big money to shock and say controversial things and when they do say shocking and controversial things, the usual suspects can be counted on to demand they be driven from the public airways. The only truly free speech is offensive speech, all other and speech that "tickles your ears" has no need of Constitutional protection.

Posted by: slim2 | August 18, 2010 6:59 PM

@McDave 2. She didn't call anyone the "N-word". She was talking rhetorically and repeated the word trying to make a point about white people using the word--not as an insult directed at the caller. Unwise, ignorant and insensitive perhaps, but hardly racist. Seriously folks. Get over it.
What are we getting over? Lets do two simple experiments go to your job tomorrow and say the "N" word eleven times around a group or just one of the black employees in your office. Remember you did not say it directly at anyone in particular but you said it out loud and they heard it.. Guess what happens next, you will get fired so fast and labeled a racist.

Second experiment go around of group of black males and say the "N" word over and over again and see what happens, before you do make sure you have running shoes on and 911 on speed dial because you may not have enough time to convince any of them that you are not a racist. Laura shows incredible lack of sophistication, she can think what she wants but you can't say what you want without it potentially having consequences. And in this case it did she is a disgrace and she will lose millions of dollars in endorsements and sponsorships. Its extremely risky to use these words regardless of what your intentions are. To avert unintented consequences I would not use them especially not in public, words hurt period!!!

I do agree with you she should have never been on the radio and yes...good riddance!!!

Although my politics are definitely left-wing, I am opened-minded enough to have recently purchased a copy of one of Dr. Laura's books, knowing what an ultra-conservative blabber mouth she was. I generally detest self-help books, but this one had a title something like, "Quit Whining and Get Moving" and at the time, I needed some perspective during a temporary funk. Plus it was on sale at the grocery store for $5.

Now here's my take on the situation as a black American: not only was her particular use of the N-word offensive, it was unnecessary to make the point she was trying to make to the caller. Even worse than the repetitive use of the N-word, was the horrible advice that she gave the caller, who was presumably black and a fan of the show. The caller was clearly in turmoil about the fact that her so-called husband allowed his "friends" to use the word in her presence. Dr. Laura's response only offended and further humiliated this poor woman, who had been degraded enough by the folks who had insulted her and the cowardly husband who failed to defend her. She essentially told this woman that this is what she should have expected by entering an interracial marriage and had the nerve to justify the husband's friends by saying, "well your people use it too." This from a so-called expert in human relations who's been given the authority to dispense advice to millions of people each day. It truly boggles the mind how folks are actually mystified that a black person would find this alarming. Seriously?!

I feel for the spooks who used to listen to her, where will they go for help?

Posted by: Roism007 | August 18, 2010 7:51 PM

i wish the fecculent old sow had actually seen herself in the mirror and blown her brains out. that would be the right decision. her face looks like an old wallet.

Posted by: lambcannon | August 18, 2010 7:58 PM

I never listened to her much. Setting aside her moral opinions and political leanings, what I remember was anger, anger, anger, and self-righteousness. Good riddance to "Dr." Laura.

Posted by: lserfass | August 18, 2010 8:07 PM

What we need as a society is more compassion, humility, kindness, empathy, listening, and suspension of judgment. Dr. Laura was all about humiliation and bludgeoning anguished callers with pat answers. Once the "Dr." Lauras have gone the way of the dodo bird, the rest of us can cultivate the compassionate virtues without distraction.
