He might have gotten more satisfaction if he had told the pilot who, in turn, could have alerted the TSA that they had an unruly passenger. Seeing the passenger taken off in hand irons or detained would have been better than losing his job.

Though the flight attendant's behavior wasn't justified, it's not difficult to understand why he snapped. How about bringing charges against the offending passenger for unbuckling his seat belt and endangering other passengers by removing his luggage while the plane was still taxiing to the gate?

Over the years I have read and heard about some unbelievable acts of stupidity and selfishness by airline travelers. If this guy has lasted 28 years doing that job without losing his cool, he deserves an award. While deploying the emergency chute WAS over the top, he deserves a pass on cursing at the jerk passenger. He was probably saying out loud what most of the rest of the passengers were thinking.

That being said I didn't know Jet Blue carried beer.

Anyone who has worked in the dead-end of "customer service" can appreciate this incident. The unruly passenger deserved to be thrown out of the aircraft.

I'd like to see everyone start calling out these jerks who act out on airplanes, abusing the flight crew, bringing monster carry-on luggage on board, jumping out of their seats before the plane comes to a stop, etc. Public humiliation is the only way to stop these infantile fools.

Fine, some passengers are jerks. So are many airline employees who abuse and humiliate their customers with some of the worst service extant in the business world. That's right: customers. Far too many who would never tolerate, for example, getting the wrong food at a restaurant, served cold and after a two-hour wait - and then being charged for it, and maybe being charged extra for salt and pepper to top it all off - seem to be quick to blame customers who get a similar experience from the airline industry. What's more, that experience is routine, unlike my restaurant hypothetical, which I've never experienced, and bet I never will. The worst service we get from other providers is something we would celebrate from airlines as a vast improvement.

How is losing his job (possibly) and being arrested hurting the jerk passenger? Cussing at him I understand, after that it was just silly. The other passengers had nothing to do with the scenario and were probably delayed much more (the crew also). Jerks on Metro, jerks that drive, jerks that work in grocery and department stores, jerks at the office... they are everywhere. No point in reacting over the top at every one of them.

Granted, Slater was being paid by the airline to deal diplomatically with difficult passengers, but people are increasingly self-absorbed. We see it in traffic, in restaurants--everywhere. People's behavior indicates that they give no thought whatsoever to any other human being. Unfortunately, there may be more incidents like this unless people start learning to be more considerate. (The passenger could do with some punishment for what she did.)

I wonder if flight crews hesitate to call the cops or kick unruly jerks off the plane because the airline will punish them for fear of losing business.

As a passenger who been trapped on planes with rude obnoxious self centered jerks and seen the abuse and massive bags they heap on everyone around them including the flight attendants, I would happily give my business to an airline that caters to the majority of their passengers by having the turkeys arrested or thrown off the plane.

When the cops arrested this queen at his house he was found in a sexual embrace with his partner. Of course WaPo omits this detail that was in every other news report, what a crock. The flight attendant is the most overworked, underpaid and overly abused worker in the country. He should have tased the passenger, tied him into his seat and called the marshals to arrest him. I, too, am sick of these passengers who think the rules of flying do not apply to them. When the plane is taxiing to the gate, sit down and shut up. You can get your bags just like everyone else when the plane comes to a stop. If something should happen during the time the plane is still moving, you can bet the passenger would sue the pants off the airlines and then of course, our costs as travelers would go even higher.

While I certainly agree that this is pretty funny, and the passenger a complete jerk, a flight attendant is in the job of customer service.

However, as someone who trains customer service personnel for a living, this is a FAIL of epic proportions.
Slater was paid to ensure the safety of passengers, assist them, and provide them with good service. And sometimes that means putting up with a complete jerkwad, not taking their inanity personally, and doing your best to defuse the incident without causing any harm to the customer, yourself, or the company.
That was his job, and he failed at it.
Obviously he knew this would be his swan song, just as it would be if one of my Reps were to scream "yeah, well you can take your payment and shove it up your behind!" and storm out of my office.

Satisfying? Maybe for a short time, but then the inevitability sets in that you
a) lost your job in a poor economy,
b) will have difficulty getting hired elsewhere because of your actions (in this case not just because he'd get a bad recommendation from JetBlue, but also because now he's famous as for being reactionary)
c) won't get severance or benefits of any sort from your former employer, and
d) may even be SUED by that employer.

This definitely satisfies that part of us that would love to give the middle finger to the man, but ultimately it was a completely irresponsible and unnecessary act from someone who reverted to being a petulant child.

The passenger needs to be identified and receive sort of recognition. He needs to either be taken out behind the woodshed for being one of those idiots who prefer to 'hurry up and wait' by standing before the plane stops. It's unfortunate that he was not one of those that actually took a tumble during the plane's jerking stop.

Personally, I think airlines should adopt a no-nonsense approach and swiftly leave these passengers on the ground to fume. I don't advocate a military state but people in general have become such craven, self-serving animals in the way they behave towards others, behaving in ways they would never expect in return, that there has to be a line; people should not have to be subjected to this kind of behavior from "customers."

On the other side of the coin, flight attendants these days aren't exactly all "coffee, tea or me" either. Oftentimes, they forget what they do for a living and who the paying customer is in the way they behave towards passengers. I refuse to fly domestic airlines on long haul flights for that very reason. As an airline veteran, unfortunately, unruly customers are part of the job; if he hadn't figured it out by now, he should have left the profession a long time ago. What he did was unprofessional and he deserved to be arrested. He'll figure out soon that its not that easy to find another job these days. What does a veteran flight attendant do? Wait tables and deal with more unruly customers on the ground?

I fly plenty and there are way too many people that think a $300 bargain fair entitles them to act like complete jerks. They should be arrested and banned from flying for 6 months. Let them experience driving 12,000 miles is to their next business trip. Maybe this will cool their jets.

Hopefully he will soon be a former JetBlue flight attendant. Whatever happen to the customer is always right. Any one working with the public has their share of horror stories regarding irate, unruly and disrespectful customers and knows dealing with this type of customer comes with the job. But if your solution to the problem of a bad behaving customer is to expose all of the patrons to a cursing rant then don't be surprised that you get a pink slip.

According to the Company, no person was ever in any danger. Which means that only the Company was in danger from bad PR ... because in a Customer Service dispute he would have been thrown under the bus in a NY minute. It has been common practice in Retail occupations to give in to customers who are Lawyers no matter how outrageous the demand. If you do not, your boss will. The passenger should have been arrested for assault and battery ... and if SS refused to drop the charges the Company would have fired him.

Two free beers and a chance to play on the slide may be small comfort, but it was the only "win" for him. He should get August's Shirley Sherrod Award for being a somebody.

Not that the attendants behavior was excusable, it was not. If the attendant's going to be arrested for breaking the rules, the impatient passenger should as well.

I think what this guy did was awesome in that it was totally justified and unlike many, he used his words - nobody got shot or hurt, but he sure did let em he was sick and tired and not going to put up with it anymore.

I hope they go easy on him (he did get hit in the head, maybe he wasn't himself) and they should definitely fine or arrest the passenger that thought they were so important they couldn't wait to de-board the plane like the rest of the passengers.

And in a world where Levi Johnston can wring every last penny out of just being associated with someone famous, this guy at least deserves to get one beer commercial out of this. You know, to tide him over until he finds another job.

I am in complete sympathy with Mr. Slater. Flying is no longer fun, and the self-absorbed, self-important trolls who lug everything onto the plane and need it as soon as the plane lands are the worst of the worst. I hope the passenger gets locked up as well. And as for the way he quit, I sympathize -- go big and go home. I quit my first job (at Mickey D's) more than 30 years ago, and it was over something trivial. I just got fed up, said "I QUIT" and walked out. I was sick and tired of working all day on Sunday, I was missing church and my friends, and my grandmother was dying. I hope someone organizes a defense fund for him!

It's pretty depressing that people think that this guy is any kind of hero. It says a lot about people and their attitudes when they think that breaking the law and disrupting airport operations is okay when you are having a bad day.

And geez if you have a job where you have to interact with customers on a daily basis then you have to be ready for that every day.

There are many many ways to react when a customer is not behaving correctly but using their bad behavior as an excuse for yours is just pathetic.

Why oh why are you complaining about airlines and their policies? There are plenty of ways to travel, if you don't like airlines then choose another mode of transportation.

Why not imagine what it was like to travel on sailing ship or stagecoach, and enjoy the luxury of a warm seat and a timely arrival.

You only have to fly for a couple of hours, grin and bear it, you insisted on buying the cheapest possible ticket, why should you expect anything but the cheapest possible service?

OK - hands now: how many of us just want to toss those folks off (the ones that get up during landing to grab their bags, or the ones who bring a steamer trunk on and expect it to fit)?

Does it bother them that they are endangering us? If something happens during the taxi (it can) that person and his luggage are projectiles that will hit one of us. I've also had overloaded bins pop open and the contents cascade on my head during turbulence - not fun.

No, we can't blow them away. . .but we can dream. A beer and then the slide - classic!

Slater reacted to problems that airlines need to fix.

1. A restaurant wouldn't tolerate a boorish customer whose behavior bothers or endangers other paying customers. Why should airlines? When people refuse to follow the rules that the rest of us manage to follow on a plane or behave obnoxiously to other passengers or flight attendants, the airline should identify them and ban them from making reservations on their flights for a year.

2. The source of most contention on an airplane is the overhead bin. Airlines have exacerbated the problem by charging to check bags. Increase your fares and give passengers an incentive for checking bags. How about an extra 250 airline award points for checking absolutely everything and an extra 150 points for checking all but a brief case, purse, diaper bag, or a coat?

I don't know about everyone else, but I'd happily pay an extra $10 per ticket to be able go to/from my seat without waiting for 15 minutes for people who are wrestling footlockers into/out of overhead bins and the first airline that introduces a "ban the boor" policy will have my life-long loyalty.

The passenger was probably an ass but the real evil bastards are the bean counters who run the airlines--padding their own salaries constantly and putting the squeeze on attendants and travellers to pay for it. I sympathize fully with Steven and hope someone will start a FB or MS page to raise money for his bail and legal defense fund. I'd give my five bucks. Maybe some lawyer might take this on pro bono. The charges should be dropped and the airline industry fat cats should all collectively apologize full-on Japanese style to all flight attendants and travellers. (Who knows, maybe that passenger was an airline exec...)

Being a passenger on any airline these days is just so incredibly stressful. You're crammed into a tiny space, basically told to sit down and shut up, given little a/c or too much, not allowed to go to the bathroom, etc.

No wonder the passengers snapped. And quite frankly after listening to probably dozens of complaints it is easy to see how the flight attendants could snap as well.

Until customer service returns to the overpriced airlines, I predict more of these incidents.

What will it take before a company/organization supports their employees? Companies will tell employees to take abuse that would get the abuser arrested on a city street ... then dump the employee for finally reaching their limit. JetBlue is lucky he didn't assault the jerk instead of sliding out for a break.

Management for the airline would have patted him on the head and told him they understood his point of view and asked him how to best rectify the situation of the planes being too slow to get to the ramp and how everyone else jumps up in front of him and gets in his way when he is trying to get off the plane. Management could care less about the employees who deal with these issues everyday. And if the plane had hit a bump on the tarmac and the passenger would have fallen and hurt himself, they would have paid the bills then settled the lawsuit. It's all about the bottom dollar and public perception. This guy is and will always be a hero to the busted down, busted up, ignored and mistreated everyday American working for a living. Remember the movie, "9 to 5"? This was a replay.

Passengers aren't "impatient" some are downright rude, thoughtless, me first individuals. Apparently, like many on this blog. Anyway, that nasty passenger assaulted him, accident or not she was in the overhead bin taking out luggage while the plane was still rolling. What if her actions had injured another passenger. Geez, people, stay in your stupid seats until you're told otherwise. Or, better yet, take a train and stay outta the airspace. What fools.

Everything could have been avoided, if this disrespecfull passenger would have apologized, these days every body thinks, they the only ones to deserve respect, forgetting that WE ALL DESERVE TO BE TREATED WITH REPECT AND DIGNITY!

He was probably just burned out. He probably didn't do any more than many overworked, underappreciated employees would like to do. If I were the authorities, I would drop the charges.

The only reason why Slater was arrested is because Big Business who love "Right To Work" hate being reminded that it goes both ways. They want the right to fire any employee at any time for any reason but it's another kettle of fish where they take great umbrage when an employee finally gets fed up with their crummy job. For Big Buisness loyalty is a One Way Street.

And to those who said that smart thing for Slater to do was to have the abusive passenger arrested - Slater probably knew that the company would stand behind the customer and not support him in anyway.

Flight attendants do their work very professionally despite the fact that they are always in danger due to hijacking,plane problems, Pilot's error etc. The passengers should be considerate and sympathetic to them. This particular passenger/Attendant combination is very rare case. Generally I have found that passengers become restless for very small things. The Attendant in this case should not be subjected to severe punishment (like a criminal)but instead should be warned and given some counselling.He did not hurt or harm anyone.

Who do some of these passengers that do not comply with the flight crew's instrutions think they are? The flight crew is the entire passenger body rep of safety. Steve did correctly with this pasenger but a lot of us whould put that passenger in the over head bin if they could get away with it.

This guys' problem is that in all the time that he's been a flight attendant, he hasn't learned how to deal with "unruly" passengers.

Maybe that's the airlines' problem as well but still. What you do is you tell them very simply until you all calm down, no one is getting off this plane. And if they can't do that then call airport security and have them taken off in cuffs one at a time until that happens.

This guy was the wrong employee doing the wrong job at the wrong time. And now they need to make an example out of him as well.
