This poll presents false choices. One of the choices should have been:

"Yes, I believe SB 1070 will be highly effective not only at keeping illegal aliens out of Arizona, but preventing the entry of legal aliens from Mexico, as well as citizens from other states and countries, causing further economic ruin to the tourism-dependent State of Hate that already ranks as the second poorest in the nation."

A better poll question: Do you believe the law will keep illegal aliens out of AZ? Yes. As for keeping them out of the US--our politicians are too slimy to protect Americans or our borders, so yes, they will continue to come here and wreak havoc: fraud, cheap & illegal labor, out of wedlock children, MS-13 and other gangs, prostitution...oh yeah, this is what our country needs

Posted by: woof3 | October 9, 2010 10:47 PM

Those of us living in Arizona think it's working already. Since most outsiders have never even read the law, let me quote from section 1: "The legislature declares that the intent of this act is to make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local
government agencies in Arizona. The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States."

Got that? The PURPOSE of SB1070 was to discourage illegal immigration and encourage those illegals already here to LEAVE - i.e. attrition through enforcement.

Arizona began imposing stiff sanctions on businesses that hired illegals in 2007. Estimates are that there are now about 180,000 fewer illegals in Arizona than there were before that law was passed. SB 1070 will speed that exodus.

The correct answer is the law will never be enforced.

Posted by: b_100666 | October 10, 2010 9:26 AM

The poster from Arizona who purported to speak on behalf of all people from Arizona should speak for himself. I live in Arizona and agree with the poster who says the law will never be enforced. In fact I believe that our Governor is hoping that the appeal will uphold the invalidity of the law. She will be elected for a full term because of her signing the law but, if she was sensible, would want it to go away because it is hurting the state's economy.

Another person who has either not read the law or is lying. There is nothing in the Arizona law that stops legal immigrants or visitors from entering or visiting Arizona, if fact they will welcome any and all legal visitors and immigrants. The key word is LEGAL.

Posted by: rchayes | October 10, 2010 9:45 AM

The Arizona law is the same law as the U.S. law, they are just enforcing it. The question isn't whether Arizona hates immigrants or Mexicans, despite the rhetoric. Are we a country of laws or not, is the question? Immigrants make valuable contributions to our country, but they should be here legally under a system of immigration which translates the needs of the country and manages the demand for entry. Anything short of that, which is what we have had for 30 years, is tantamount to a borderless country. If we believe that is the position we should have, then perhaps our troops would serve the region better by re-conquering Mexico and installing a true democratic form of government there with functioning policies. That country needs unions (not like what our have turned into) and other institutions to build a solid and stable middle class, instead of the two tiered system of exploitation that now exists. Mexicans would love to stay in Mexico, frankly. They have no love for the U.S. They come here because conditions in their beloved country are intollerable for raising a family. Fix THAT and you really fix most of the illegal immigration problem.

Posted by: illinois1 | October 10, 2010 9:48 AM

The new law is already having a POSITIVE EFFECT in Az.
The illegal rats are starting to leave the sugarmound that has been feeding them, harboring them and giving them free medical care for decades, now it is time to pull them off the teat and ship them out of our country and back to their own failed country that is so imbued with drug dealers, that the drug cartels are literally running the country, just as they have bee for the last 50 years.

Posted by: JimW2 | October 10, 2010 10:39 AM

Does anyone vet these questions? Will the law, even if not fully enforced help reduce illegals in Arizona? Absolutely. Will it lead to similar laws elsewhere? Hopefully. Will is shame the federal government into finally enforcing the existing laws against illegals and Americans who employ them? Unfortunately not likely.

Posted by: MatthewWeaver | October 10, 2010 10:41 AM

For many Americans the reason they will not vote for the Democrats in November is because the Democrats and Obama do not deport all illegal aliens, lawbreakers; they support the Dream Act; and they support amnesty for illegal aliens. Americans have said many, many, many times (during the Bush administration and this administration) no amnesty to illegal aliens. But the politicians like Obama and the Democrats keep pushing this nonsense issue. The solution here is to enforce current immigration laws. But Obama and the Democrats want amnesty for their lovely illegal aliens, lawbreakers. Well it is very clear, Obama and the Democrats are not listening to the ones who sent them to Congress and the White House, Americans. So, the Democrats and Obama have to go; we are sick and tired. In November let's clean house and vote all the Democrats out and in 2012 let's replace Obama. They do not work for Americans . They work for illegal aliens, lawbreakes. And that we do not accept.

we have a serious question to answer-

why is NM having no problems with illegal immagrants, while all surrounding states - OK, TX, AR and CO are having problems?

what is NM doing right that no other state seems to understand?

Posted by: boblesch | October 10, 2010 10:47 AM

Most likely the people Voting it would do some good are White Americans Not of any Color,Because I Live in Arizona what I see is that Illegal are being hired because employers don't want to pay high wages. If there weren't all these corperations and companies wanting to make the bigger profit there wouldn't have these poblems.

Posted by: milltownfan | October 10, 2010 11:04 AM

How many laws do we want to just pretend to enforce? Why have laws at all?

Posted by: edbyronadams | October 10, 2010 11:06 AM

Even though I realize initially SB 1070 will place an additional burden on the rest of the States as the ILLEGALS leave Arizona and deplete even more of the resources of these states, the remaining state’s legislators will hopefully be forced to implement laws the same as SB 1070 to protect their CITIZENS.

You can not wait for the Federal Government to take ACTION, the struggle against ILLEGALS will have to be fought at the State and Local level if and until the Federal Government decides to Secure our Borders and Enforce our Immigration Laws!

Since I live in Houston I realize that Houston and a large portion of Texas pretty much function as Sanctuaries for the ILLEGALS we should be prepared for more ILLEGALS; of course we don't seem to have enough jobs for all of our ILLEGALS now wondering the streets looking for trouble. I can see our Houston and Texas ILLEGALS wanting the borders of TEXAS defended from the ARIZONA ILLEGALS; No not really they would openly welcome their fellow ILLEGALS there is enough taxpayer money to support all ILLEGALS!

Posted by: walnutst | October 10, 2010 11:51 AM

Just follow the money! The problem for at least the last 20 years is too many Elitist Politicians from both major Political Parties, have been willing to turn the United States into a welfare state to insure most of our citizens obtain Third World status by importing ILLEGALS for cheap labor to take United States Citizen’s jobs or outsourcing United States Citizen’s jobs to Third World Countries for their Political Contributors and Special Interest Groups who profit from their ILLEGALS at the expense of the United States Taxpayers. Too many U.S. Citizens are wrapped up into winning one for their political party and our nation's survival becomes secondary to PARTY Loyalty!

Posted by: walnutst | October 10, 2010 11:59 AM

Will Ariz. immigration law be effective? Yes. Certainly. Every Arizonan is itching to pick vegetables and paint houses. White affluent Arizonans are dying to do roofing work and yard work. Look at all the new jobs opening up for the Tea Partiers in Arizona! I'm sure we'll hear less from them now that they finally have the jobs they've always wanted!

Posted by: swatkins1 | October 10, 2010 1:03 PM

Actually SB1070 already has been effective on a limited basis. We closed two entire schools locally because school enrollment was down that much. I feel for other states because I know the illegals didn't go home to Mexico they just moved to Texas, CA, NV, and NM primarily. If our federal govt bothered to enforce the law throughout the country we would see a greater reduction. Right now the feds are going after criminal illegals and not bothering to deport everyone.

Obama continues to harass AZ with lawsuits filed by Holder so until we can get our politicians on board nothing will really change. It's going to take electing politicians who will agree to start deporting ALL illegals found not just the criminals. The feds are granting delays to the noncriinals then they melt back into the population. Somehow we need to convince politicians we mean business.

Posted by: Desertdiva1 | October 10, 2010 1:59 PM

DESERTDIVA1 you hit the nail on the head with saving money not attempting educate the ILLEGALS and their anchors, Texas could save billions in education alone if they did not through away Taxpayer's money on the ILLEGALS. Why does Texas attempt to educate the ILLEGALS and their anchors! Texas has a bilingual program for just Spanish speakers only costing Billions of dollars once it began to pick up steam. The ILLEGALS and their anchors in the Texas School System are so illiterate that our schools have to spend time and resources to teach the ILLEGALS and anchors "proper" Spanish before they can even consider teaching the ILLEGALS and anchors English! The ILLEGALS and anchors have their own program starting in pre-kindergarten through the 5th grade, seven years, and most do not or do not want to learn English. But the Feds and Texas continue to flood the school system with our money. Don't be concerned, the ILLEGALS do not have any intention of learning English! They want to take over the U.S. for their Third World home countries or at the very least turn the U.S. into just another Third World Country so they may feel more at home!

"Teachers" in the Texas ILLEGALS (bilingual) pre-kindergarten - 5th grade program receive several thousand dollars per year more than the real TEACHERS who work with the "NON-ILLEGALS"!!!!

The State of Texas claims they pay bilingual teachers extra because they are hard to find and have additional credentials. Most have less educational credentials than real teachers, many do not have educational degrees or for that fact most do not have advanced degrees that are required for real teachers. The only additional credentials are the ability to converse in Spanish. United States elementary students should not be required to learn in Spanish, the reason for the "bilingual program (ILLEGAL program)" is that we are forced to "educate" the ILLEGALS and their Anchors!

I support the AZ law.

There should be no illegals here.

All H1-B visa needs to be audited.

All employers should verify the status.

All republicans should stop giving lip service and then go hire illegals themselves.

Democrats should stop dreaming of latino vote bank.

Texas and New Mexico are having serious problems with illegal migrants. Relative to its population, Texas probably has more illegals than does Arizona, as does California, but the folks in Arizona became concerned because the level of illegal inflow seemed to be higher in their state than others. Geography may be part of the answer.

1.) OK and CO do not have a common border with Mexico

2.)Most of NM's southern border is with Texas whereas ALL of AZ's southern border is with Mexico

3.) The geography of AZ's southern border with Mexico makes it easier to cross than is the Mexico/Texas border (the Rio Grande is a pretty formidable barrier in many places)

Fact is, a lot states are experiencing difficulties with illegals and in the end, the reason is that the government hasn't been doing its job.

Posted by: Bob22003 | October 10, 2010 3:06 PM

The biggest problems are the politicians that have quietly put policies and laws in place that make it difficult to determine who is illegal. Or paying social program subsidies to noncitizens. In AZ we can't ask for birth certificates before enrolling children in school. Why? Why should our tax money be paid to educate illegals? Why should US federal and state social programs pay noncitizens? We even pay to support the nonprofit organizations that help illegals sign up for handouts. Again why? Those are definitely first areas to focus and close. Policies that make it easier to find and cut off funding for education, housing, food stamps, medical care etc to noncitizens. There are too many US citizens going without while illegals get the brunt of funding. Close those gaps and the only way to do it is put politicians in place who promise to do just that. If you cut off their funding they will go home. By continuing to fund their presence here in the US you only prolong the issue.

Posted by: Desertdiva1 | October 10, 2010 3:32 PM

The law will help to a point. But there is one more issue that the poll didn't address.

The Federal government of the United States has declared war on our people by not enforcing our laws. This makes us vulnerable to all the ills that illegal immigration brings about.

So, what Arizona does good, the federal governmnent undoes with bad.

Goodbye Democrats! Goodbye!

Hum, I guess those who voted Yes for the question don't realize that the borders of Arizona only start and end with the borders of Arizona, and not the borders of other states, or the rest of the country.

Posted by: lcarter0311 | October 10, 2010 4:18 PM

Yes you are correct, Basically the Federal Government has declared war on the Citizens of Arizona in particular and all United States Citizens in general taking the side of the foreign ILLEGALS that are invading our nation.

As a native Arizona resident I am AGAINST illegal immigration. As an African American in Arizona I detest racial profiling. Arizona law enforcement has been under investigation for racial profiling by the DOJ since the Bush administration. It is unfortunate that the Arizona GOP remains the party of Evan Meacham and Fife Symington.

Posted by: neec13 | October 10, 2010 4:58 PM

Actions have consequences. 1/3 of Arizona's economy is based on trade with Mexico. 1/3 of Arizona's LEGAL population is Hispanic.

This clearly biased legislation offends both Hispanics and Mexico's government.

Be careful what you wish for, Arizona... you might get it.

Yes,Yes,Yes, Our Arizona SB 1070 Law sure is working very effectively already.and even before the court challenge and actual
passage as other posters pointed out here. The mere fact that between 100,000 to 160,000 or more Illegal Alien Criminals have already left Arizona proves it is and
that no amount of WAPO & liberal BS can stop them leaving in fear of arrest and deportation and no matter how many lawsuits
Barack Hussein Obama and Mr Lawsuit Eric Holder bring against us here in Arizona it
will continue to work very well. Let me be
clear here 22 more States are already working on passing their own SB 1070 and so
Comrades Obama,Holder,Napolitano,Morton and
Madame Nancy Pelosi will cost the Democrats
loss of Congress & the White House for their failing to enforce federal immigration lawS! Arrest & Deport All of
them and Jail Their Employers NOW! Just Vamoose Illegals We Donot Want You Here!

I hope so.

I have a dream that I can walk into Giant and see signs in English, that I can ride the bus and hear announcements in English. I dream the assumption is any transaction in the United States will be in English and I won't have to press 2 for English.
Deport the illegals NOW!

how many times does a democrat have to be told to read a law, either the ones they pass over public outcry or the ones passed by the people on their enemies list, who they love to distort and mislead on?

the AZ law EXPRESSLY PROHIBITS profiling!!!

read the bill!!

the only people encouraging are the Dems attacking Christine Whitman for hiring someone who had what seemed like a valid social security card but, in fact, had been forged.

Posted by: dummypants | October 10, 2010 6:59 PM

The ironic thing is that under the Democrats we are deporting more illegal aliens than ever; see the Washington Post article from Friday:
The number coming in is also down, due to both better enforcement and the poor economy decreasing the demand for their labor.
At the same time I'd like to shout out a thank you to the citizens of Arizona for driving business out of their state with this stupid law. We'll be more than happy to take what they are giving up through their intolerance.

I hope it will be successful. I thought that by exempting particular illegal aliens (not immigrants) from being questioned about their status, it renders all other people in the state: Americans of any stripe, visitors, those with work visas, even returning members of the armed forces, to be second class to the illegal aliens, because they could still be stopped and questioned about their status. It seemed that in order to give protection to illegal aliens, they were being accorded rights that would make them to be of a class above everyone else.

- In light of the "faithfully execute" clause of the Constitution, the President's failure to faithfully execute the immigration and naturalization laws is Unconstitutional.

- We, the People have not authorized the government to create a North American union that would, for all intents and purposes, erase our northern and southern borders. The development of a North American Union is Unconstitutional.

I hope every Latino in Arizona moves to another state. I can hardly wait to see the remaining white Arizonans sweat in the produce fields, clean the hotel and motel bathrooms, scrub the pots and pans in the restaurants, and otherwise do the scut work that they now pay Latinos to do.

Posted by: reporter1 | October 10, 2010 11:50 PM

Arizona, what are you doing? For shame. You should allow your borders to be over run. You should allow your schools to be bursting at the seems. You should allow your emergency rooms to over flow.

You should be happy that you're the kidnap capital of the world. Wow. What makes you think that you can protect your state from going bankrupt? They pay their taxes, how, I don't know since they are illegal and don't have SS numbers. Oh that's right, they have a baby and use their kids SS number. (Isn't that fraud?) So suck it up Arizona and do it the American way, turn your back to the problem.

Posted by: themightyzep2000 | October 11, 2010 12:11 AM

I am for legal immigration. My mother was an immigrant. She busted chops to learn English, to educate herself and to become an American. In GA a year or so ago, several small black owned landscaping businesses were closing, why? Couldn't compete with illegals who pay no taxes, have no insurance of any kind. I spoke with an illegal working at someone's house. He has been in and out of the country for over 15 years. He lives with a group of men, and every dime goes back to Mexico. He said he provides well for his family and will retire a 'rich man' there. He cannot read or write English and his language skills are very poor. He has no allegiance to the US except what he can get out of it.

I taught English as a 2nd language (volunteer, classes were free), Out of an average of 10-15 students in the class, perhaps one was Hispanic. That tells me a lot. WE'RE SUCKERS, run by a government of millionaires who want nothing but to be re-elected. Why is Pelosi so arrogant that she will win? Hmmm, sounds mighty strange to me.

Posted by: VAtrailerTrash | October 11, 2010 1:32 PM

There are so many illegals in this country they should be deported by the truckloads, wait their turn, learn English, and then, apply for citizenship, the way OUR ancestors had to come in. if they don't want to learn OUR language, they don't want to live here obviously!
The Arizona law is only a beginning. All Americans are asked to produce I.D.s many times and in many places for many reasons. NONE of that can logically be considered racial profiling because it happens to ALL of us!

Posted by: Maerzie | October 12, 2010 1:10 AM

Just to refresh a few memories: The Mexicans were brought here by the Republicans, who wanted them for cheap labor in their corporations, but the Reagan, another REPUBLICAN, of course, gave them amnesty! Of course, we now know there is nothing "cheap" about them. They demand as much and MORE than the Americans, whose jobs they stole! They are also very rude and refuse to learn English, but banks and other businesses cater to their stubbornness to learn English because they deal in their illegal cash (which they get paid because then their employers don't have to bother to claim they are working there, or get fined.) Press 2 for Spanish? the language of THEIR countries, NOT ours, while they usurp all our benefits and our employees now have to be bi-lingual because of them. It is all BULLSNIT!!

ICE Presents Misleading Deportation Data

On October 6, Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director, John Morton, held a press conference to announce that in 2010 ICE had “removed more illegal aliens than in any other period in the history of our nation.” (DHS/ICE Press Release, Oct. 8, 2010) According to ICE’s deportation statistics, from October 2009 until September 2010, the agency deported 392,862 illegal aliens. (Los Angeles Times, Oct. 6, 2010) Roughly half of the deportations—more than 195,000—were of criminal illegal aliens. (Id.) However, Napolitano failed to mention that while the deportation of criminal illegal aliens has risen, the change in the total number of overall deportations is statistically insignificant. (Washington Post, Mar. 8, 2010) In fact, the number of deportations of non-criminal illegal aliens has decreased, reflecting not only the unwillingness of the Obama Administration to uniformly enforce U.S. immigration laws against both criminal and non-criminal illegal aliens, but also the Administration’s constant misrepresentation of immigration data to make it appear as if it is actually enforcing the law.

Napolitano attributes the increase in criminal deportations to the Secure Communities program (partnership between ICE and state and local law enforcement agencies that uses fingerprints to identify aliens who have been booked into state and local jails). (DHS/ICE Press Release, Oct. 8, 2010) However, while Secure Communities is a step in the right direction in enforcing our nation’s immigration laws, it is unclear whether the increase in the number of criminal alien deportations is completely attributable to the program. FAIR President Dan Stein observed, “Secretary Napolitano is giving herself and DHS a big pat on the back for stepping up enforcement without mentioning that the department is merely completing cases initiated under the previous administration, under policies that she and President Obama have aggressively dismantled since taking office.” (FAIR Press Release, Oct. 7, 2010)
