What should be on the headstones of troops killed in Iraq?

Along the meticulously spaced rows of graves at Arlington National Cemetery, the names of the nation's wars are clearly etched into the headstones: World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Korea, the Persian Gulf.

Soon, a new inscription for troops killed in Iraq could appear: "Operation New Dawn."

Unlike in past conflicts, the overwhelming majority of headstones for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan at the nation's most hallowed military burial ground use the military's official names for those conflicts: Operation Enduring Freedom for Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom for Iraq. As of Sept. 1, Operation Iraqi Freedom has been rebranded Operation New Dawn. Read the full story.

What should be written on the gravestones?

"Another life wasted in an unnecessary war"

Excellent, "GM2525"!! Very honest and factual!

IN LINE OF DUTY

Posted by: dave19 | October 12, 2010 7:56 AM

Operation "Lost Cause." When Bush and Cheney invaded Iraq, they abandoned our troops in Afghanistan with no mission, no leadership and no strategy...and the outcome of the Afghan war was decided...back in 2003. In fact, Obama's biggest blunder has been in not realizing that the war in Afghanistan is a lost cause. And the "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq cost almost 40,000 U.S. dead or wounded, up to one million Iraqi lives (but who cares?), more than ONE TRILLION dollars in debt (mostly transferred to privates that support the Republican Party) and a generation of damaged veterans.

I like "In the line of duty." I think it would be a waste to redo all the Operation Enduring or Iraqui Freedom headstones -- better to spend the money on wounded veterans who are still alive and their families or the families of the fallen. I also wish the Post would let up on Arlington Cemetery -- to me, it looks like the Post is going overboard with their constant attacks on the cemetery managers.

"War To Fill Cheney's Bank Accounts With Millions In Blood Money"

Redo the tombstones with "Iraq War" and send the bill to Bush, Cheney, and Rummy.

These folks died in a war. Don't try to make it sound like a day at the beach. Stop the propoganda. They didn't die a pretty death, don't make it sound like it. (former Navy combat Corpsman)

I'd like for it to say Iraq War, but understand why it says Operation New Dawn. While against the war since well before it was started I find a lot of the political comments on here disrespectful to the soldiers.

Folks should keep in mind the US hasn't declared war since WWII

Anyone who wonders why these wars will bankrupt us and we will still loose need look no further than the imbeciles at the DoD. Jefus H. Krist these guys are morons and we pay them to think this stuff up. They should be using all their mental agility, the mental agility of a small soap dish, to get us out of "Operation What-Ever-the-Idiots-Call-It."

If they had a choice between declaring the name of the conflict and making sure the soldiers were buried properly, then I choose that they were buried properly. They died to defend this Country they deserve respect first and conflicts later.
