Has the mandate requiring NFL teams to talk to minorities before hiring, become a joke?

Since NFL equality is preached and NFL plsyers are 70% black, what is being done by the NFL to introduce more white players?

SammyB1 you are either just plain ignorant or just plain racist. Here's hoping it's the former, not the latter.

Duhhh!

70 percent of the players are black. The Rooney Rule applies to HEAD COACHES!

So when 70 percent of NFL Head Coaches are black, if the Rooney rule is still in effect, then both YOU and I will march together in demand for it's removal.

And just guess why 70 percent of NFL players are black.
Because the playing field is level.
Everyone in the world can see.
You cannot keep the best players off the field.

Guess why only a tiny percentage of NFL Head coaches have been black. Because the "playing field" is in the corporate suites.

And just like the Fortune 500 companies, where only 4 out of 500 CEO's are black, there is nothing near a "level" field of play.

Do you know how many mediocre white Head coaches have been recycled with new opportunities in the NFL? Too many to count.

Thus concludes this semester of "racism 101"

How's that?

The rooney rule itself is a joke. If I'm trying to fill a position, and I find someone who's a perfect fit, I should be able to hire him. I shouldn't be forced to wait until a minority applies for a job. According to the rooney rule, if I interview a white person first, then I have to interview a minority as well. What If I interview a minority first. Does the rooney rule require me to interview a white person as well? My guess is no, which makes this a double standard.

Are minorities so inept or incompetent that they have to be given an engraved invitation? This rule is an insult to minorities and simply means that they will be interviewed with a wink and nod.
Let all people stand on their own merits.
MLK would have been infuriated and repulsed by this token n%#@*^& rule.
Scrap it !!!

Here's the Rooney rule explained for white dummies: Many men would love to have a job in football (as players or coaches). Black men are overrepresented by 5x (based on their population percentage) among players, but but only 2x among coaches. This is clearly unfair since blacks deserve to be overrepresented by at least 5x in all roles, in all sports. Ergo, the Rooney rule to correct this injustice.

Actually, the Rooney Rules does not force any team to hire a minority as a head coach. It doesn't even give minority candidates an advantage or leg up in the hiring process. What it does, is provide a minorities with exposure to decision makers via opportunities to be interviewed that, according to past practice would not have been available to them. White candidates are still interviewed and hired. Moreover, the Rooney Rule is not mandated by any type of legislation whatsoever. It is a business decision made by a privately owned an operated entity.

The NFL is a business. Businesses should be able to hire the best qualified "person" for the job. Do we want a quota for white players in the NBA, which is 90% black? No, because the best players play. Rules and laws that force people to choose based on race always fail and foster resentment.

PracticalIndependent Author Profile Page :

Actually the Rooney Rule does not mandate the hiring of minority candidates. Its purpose it to provide prospective minority candidates with exposure to the hiring process (e.g., they have an opportunity to meet and sit before the decision makers) that, for one reason or another, the prior practice did not provide. Since it's inception some minorities have been hired but so have a substantial number of non-minorities. Also, understand that the Rooney Rule is not a result of a legal mandate, but a business decision by a privately owned an operated entity.

Great comments.

...With the exception of the remarkably ignorant insipid one.

Whatever...its about winning games and getting the best person for the job. Should be no mandates

This is a ridiculous rule! If I were a NFL owner and Bill Cowher wanted to be my next head coach, why should I have to interview a Greg Blache before I hired Cowher? To satisfy some rule?

I think this is more like the Andy Rooney rule...

Whites are disappearing on the NFL teams. Is that discriminatory? Whoever owns the teams should select whomever he wants, white, black, red...

Logically, the Rooney rule is going to have only a limited impact give the high level of the job at issue. The position being filled is not one of, say, a ticket taker, for which there are endless numbers of candidates, it really doesn't matter all that much who you hire, and which you can just start filling without any thought or planning. In picking a coach or a front officer head, you're filling one of the highest -- and sometimes the highest profile -- jobs in the organization. Of course, an owner is going to have a very good idea of who he wants to fill it with before "interviewing." It is (or should be) part of the business plan and you don't decide based on which applicants walk through the door. You go looking for people to fill those jobs. This doesn't mean the rule shouldn't be continued but people should recongize that the impact is going to be limited.

Is there a minimum amount of an interview thats required? I mean if all it needs is a 30 minute phone interview, then BFD.

EEOC means you have to hire the minority who performs @ 50% of the average.

now you understand H1B visas.

I know the average IQ is below 80. But wht worry about a level field, did you not note that you change goals at the half.

I am way-far from being a racist but no one will tell me who to interview for a job. This is akin to telling me who I have to rent property to. If I own the business, or the property, I do what the hell I want. Ya got it, government!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TFL, Ken

The first thing that came to my mind was refers to what Sammyb1 said. If we have to pursue equality to jam diversity down our throat, which is wrong on so many levels, why is there no rule stating that each team needs to start 50% white guys!!!
Would that happen??? Of course not! Would I want or expect it, heck no! Its preposterous!!!!
Affirmative action is socialistic and does no good as it rewards those who have not necessarily attained the qualities needed for a given position and creates animosities in those who have been left out that do qualify. We saw this in the overturned ruling by Sonya Sotomayor in Boston.

How about a Mickey Rooney rule, where short guys have to be interviewed?

ozpunk Author Profile Page :

The rule is a joke, no one wants to be the token black guy interviewing for a FO job against Bill Cowher or Mike Holmgren. Things will work themselves out now that teams are hiring more black coaches who upon retirement will become the next generation of GMs, managers, etc.

BurtReynolds Author Profile Page :

What is next? If Dan Snyder sells the Redskins, does he need to make sure a minority can bid? If not, does he need to lower the price?

I don't see the value in interviewing the token minority candidate. Allen has a track record of success. Holmgren has a track record of success. Do you really need to "justify" those type of hires? Maybe if Danny hired Matt Millen when there are suitable minority candidates available, you could have a problem with his hire (besides the fact its Matt Millen).

If I am a black assistant coach and I am asked to interview when I know the team has just got done talking with Bill Cowher or Mike Shanahan, do I go thinking I have a shot? Or do I just decline because I know they are just trying to satisfy the Rooney Rule?

however, a few years ago, people were protesting, on the grounds of racism, the lack of black quarterbacks in the NFL. No one was invoking your argument that the white quarterbacks were "the best players". Why is it that when white people are selected to play quarterback, it's racism. Isn't this a double standard?
