THE QUESTION

Are Cowboys America's (most overrated) team?

Are the Dallas Cowboys perennially the most overrated team in the NFL? Are they the most overrated team in history? And after injuries to the Eagles, an uneven Giants win and the Sunday night battle between the Cowboys and Redskins, how will the NFC East shake out this season?

People want positive comments on their team. The press does what the readers want. For some reason the Cowboys have a very large national fan base. So the press give them positive comments. They do the same for the Redskins in the Washington publications. So it results with a good Dallas team being rated great or can't miss. When in reality as the season unfolds several teams can win more. For example, If they have good seasons the Saints or Minn. could be in the super bowl yet many gave the Super bowl position to Dallas.

Cowboys have a very large fan base therefore are sometimes overrated by the media. That is not to say there has not been way more good to great cowboys teams than underachieving ones. They are kind of like Notre Dame. As soon as they win a few games in a row the media is ready to put them in the superbowl. The media needs to just let them earn their way and stop anointing them by October.

Yes, Dallas is overrated both this season and historically. That comes with being America's Team. However, the most overrated franchise of all time is the Oakland/L.A. Raiders. No one thinks much about them now, but for decades they were expected to do much more than they did.

By calling themselves "America's Team," the Cowboys are the equivalent of the guy at the office who gives himself a nickname. Think of George "T-Bone" Costanza. Don't be that guy.

Cowboys are a 500 team over the last 10 years. Onoly the egos in Dallas and a great marketing campaing continnues to drive them. Great for revenue for Mr. Jones, but an average team.

Finally, I get to express myself on Dallas and the Cowboys. I was transferred to Dallas in the early 80's. Excited about the move, I was soon dismayed. Found the people, the city, and yes the cowboys overrated. I hated my two years there. I really tried, but found the people to be the biggest bunch of pretentious people I had ever experienced & that is saying something as I live in DC. However, I love DC and is my city of choice. To call themselves America's team is the false perception the peole of Dallas have of themselves. I feel better now!

I truly believe it was the Dallas cheerleaders that made them so popular. I believe they were the first to wear the skimpy shorts and tops and it certainly got my attention.

The Cowboys may be perennially overrated, but the deadskins hold title to the team with fans who have the highest expectations with no reasonable basis for it.
