Fantasy Check

Uh-Oh in Buffalo

What would an NFL season be without Terrell Owens? There really isn't a more polarizing figure in perhaps all of professional sports, although Michael Vick may lay claim to that title at the moment.

In any case, Owens's latest crisis has nothing to do with his reality show, his relationship with Dallas owner Jerry Jones or his feud with former teammate Donovan McNabb. This time it's a performance issue, or more precisely, non-performance.

Owens has been ruled out of Buffalo's third preseason game with a toe injury, and it looks as if he won't play in the Bills' final one either. Those developments have fantasy experts a bit concerned.

Owens is the top faller on RotoWire.com, which cites his age (35) and adjustment to a new offensive system as reasons to stay away.

Fantasy Football Toolbox writes: "Owens can still be a good source for touchdowns, but he should not be any team's No. 1 wideout in fantasy at this point." Toolbox rates Owens as the No. 12 wide receiver.

CBSSports.com has Owens at No. 14 and currently advises owners not to consider him until the fourth round.

Owens is 10th in ESPN's rankings, but that's the exception. You won't find him among top 10 on most sites, and even then, he's trending down.

Fantasy experts seem to think Owens is far from a guarantee for his usual production (roughly 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns) and call him a gamble at this point in his career.

That's a mighty fall for a player who has more touchdown receptions than anyone over the past three seasons.
