More on Player Targets

The trendiest fantasy stat these days is targets. For the uninitiated, targets are how many times a players gets thrown to, regardless if he makes the catch. It's important data for evaluating which wide receivers to start and which to add off the waiver wire.

I'm often asked where fantasy players can track targets. There are two Web sites that do an excellent job: Junkyard Jake and Sports Data Hub, which I blogged about last month.

Junkyard Jake lists the top 120 players in total targets this season and in the most recent week. Other useful categories include catch percentage and red zone targets.

You may be surprised to learn the Giants' Steve Smith has the most targets this season (48) through Week 4. Right behind at 47 is Randy Moss, and third -- also somewhat unexpected -- is Nate Burleson (42).

Smith and Calvin Johnson are tied with the most red-zone targets this season (8), and Moss, Andre Johnson and Chad Ochocinco are tied for second at seven red-zone targets each.

Sports Data Hub allows the user to search all players in categories such as total targets and target yardage. SDH takes more time to navigate than Junkyard Jake, but it's also more comprehensive.
