PvP: Week 8 running backs

The biggest news in all of fantasy this week was the benching of Steve Slaton after his early fumble on Sunday in a 31-10 victory over Buffalo. Slaton has seven fumbles this season, so stay tuned for updates on his status for Week 9 against Indianapolis.

Here's the top 10 PvP, with our usual rankings from Fantasy Football Nerd.

1. Matt Forte: 17.2/24
2. Maurice Jones-Drew: 16.5/29
3. Kevin Smith: 16.3/8
4. Chris Johnson: 16.2/35
5. Adrian Peterson: 16.1/19
6. Steven Jackson: 15.5/21
7. Thomas Jones: 15.3/12
8. Slaton: 14.9/1
9. Ray Rice: 14.6/16
10. LaDainian Tomlinson: 14.6/17

With the benching of Slaton came the most unexpected fantasy performance of the season, as Ryan Moats took over and ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns. He added two receptions for 25 yards and accounted for 32 points in most formats (six points per touchdown, one point per 10 yards rushing and receiving).

Most fantasy experts have Moats high on their list of waiver wire additions, and even if Slaton's benching was temporary, the Texans can't simply overlook Moats's performance and deny him touches. In this era of timeshare backfields, Moats certainly figures to get at least 10 touches next week and perhaps more down the road.

Meantime, Slaton was far and away the biggest underachiever this week, accounting for a single fantasy point. Not even Forte, the first-half leader in fantasy underachieving, has had a week that bad.

Speaking of Forte, just when many owners were ready to bench the consensus top five fantasy draft pick, he had his first multi-touchdown game of the season and amassed 121 yards from scrimmage. It may be good sign on the surface, but consider Forte's performance came against Cleveland.

Taking the quality (or lack thereof, in this case) of the opponent into account, it was hardly encouraging Forte needed 26 carries to gain 90 yards against the second worst rushing defense in the league. The Browns are giving up 170.5 yards per games and 4.9 yards per carry.

Finally, kudos to Jackson for scoring his first touchdown of the season. I'm sure we'll be discussing that topic on Fantasy Thursday this week on The Mike Wise Show, so be sure to tune in at 1 p.m.
