Officials Call Non-TD Ruling Mistaken
The officials admitted they made a mistake that cost the Pittsburgh Steelers a touchdown on the final play of their 11-10 triumph Sunday over the San Diego Chargers.
Safety Troy Polamalu picked up a fumble on a lateral and ran for a Steelers' touchdown. But the officials ruled the play dead because of an illegal forward pass. They utilized an instant replay review to uphold that call.
But referee Scott Green told a pool reporter after the game that the touchdown should have been allowed to stand.
"We should have let the play go through in the end, yes," Green told the pool reporter, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The call didn't affect the outcome of the game but it has received attention in part because it kept the Steelers from covering the five-point spread on the game. According to one online estimate, by RJ Bell of Pregame.com, approximately $66 million had been wagered worldwide on the Steelers, compared to about $34 million on the Chargers.

The last call could easily be overlooked as mistaken or inept if not for the pattern of the game.
13 steelers penalties, many on very late flags wiping away points or big gains, and on things not there on replay. Only 2 against SD, one when a O lineman jumped completely out of stance. The other was that phantom call at the end wiping out a Steeler TD.
I'm not a fan of either team, and I don't give a fig about the bettors. I'm a fan of football and I'm disappointed in the NFL's lack of integrity.
