Vick Pleads Guilty to State Charge

Michael Vick pleaded guilty today to a state dogfighting-related charge and was sentenced to a suspended jail term.

The resolution of the state charges against Vick, the quarterback who is serving a 23-month federal prison sentence and is on indefinite suspension by the NFL, potentially could speed his prospective return to football. With no further charges pending against him, Vick becomes eligible to serve the final portion of his federal prison sentence in a halfway house.

"I want to apologize to the court, my family and to all the kids who looked up to me as a role model," Vick told the judge during today's hearing, according to the Associated Press.

Vick appeared in Surry County Circuit Court in Sussex, Va., reportedly arriving more than two hours early and wearing a gray suit.

He pleaded guilty to one count under a plea deal and not guilty to another count, and had that charge dropped. He was sentenced to a three-year suspended jail term and probation.

The jail term remains suspended as long as Vick completes four years of good behavior.

Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell approved the plea deal. He had not been bound by it in sentencing Vick.

Vick is serving his federal prison sentence in Leavenworth, Kan., for his role in a dogfighting operation based at a home that he owned in Virginia. He's scheduled to be released on July 20, 2009.

Each of the state felony counts against Vick was punishable by up to five years in jail. Vick pleaded guilty to one count of promoting dogfighting and not guilty to a count that involved animal cruelty, under the plea deal.

Vick was taken to Virginia last Thursday after Campbell rejected a request by Vicks' attorneys for him to plead guilty by videoconference.

The NFL will have to rule on Vick's suspension and his eligibility to play. Such a ruling is unlikely before he's released from prison. He remains under contract to the Atlanta Falcons but the franchise's owner, Arthur Blank, has said the team will not have him back. Vick's attorneys have indicated in bankruptcy court proceedings that he expects to play in the NFL again.

Vick reportedly arrived around 6:40 a.m. for his court appearance today. He had shackles on his wrists and ankles, according to the AP, but they were removed for the hearing. Family members and friends attended the hearing. About 20 uniformed police officers were stationed outside the building and Vick was driven to a covered garage in the back, the AP reported. Nine animal rights protesters stood quietly outside, according to the AP report.

Just pull the race card and you can hop on off and keep doing the crime. Vic is below contempt. And must have some evil streak. You know the worst I found out, he threw family pets in the ring with those pits. Imagine your own ass thrown into a ring with a tiger no defense..so I dont think vic should ever be allowed to play football again.

I'm still in shock that Marion Jones went to jail for lying about cheating and Vick's in jail for a reprehensible act against dogs, while R. Kelly (who was on video tape urinating on an underage girl) and Scooter Libby (who committed treason and gave up a Federal agent during a time of war for political reasons) are running around free. There's no justice in this world.

Southeasterner,
Sorry, I didn't post my name on the submission. This issue not only applies to Alaska, but the contiguous states. You are correct about the caribou population in AK, but wolf population control has worked wonders here since the 1970s! The livestock and human conflict issue is directed at the lower 48. There is no disputing the fact that it IS a problem and Alaska’s model is one that should be followed. Predator control works. It just irks me to hear people speak in absolutes. Intelligent control is THE ONLY ANSWER. We are talking about limited, focused control. Let’s not even get into the whole “GMU 19(D) east” issue unless you are a fellow biologist and would like to discuss it further.
Peace

Unlike Alaska where the only way the hunters, I mean “biologists”, can control populations is by shooting them from airplanes, in the lower 48 we have trap and release programs administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Unlike Alaska where you protecting moose populations so you can hunt 2-3 moose instead of just one in the lower 48 we are actually protecting livestock and removing wolves from urban areas…humanly.

So yeah we do have to protect livestock but we came up with a bit more intelligent approaches to doing it that doesn’t hurt the overall wolf population which is still negligible compared to historic numbers. While in GMU 19 and McGrath you have higher populations of wolves, in other regions of Alaska the populations are still at historic lows. A real biologist might see the solution as being catch and release as advised by most researchers and even prominent real biologists at the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

We have thousands of DNR workers throughout the lower 48 with thousands of positive results in predatory control that involved no kills.

The only “biologists” supporting Aerial wolf hunting and even land hunting are financially backed by grants of $600,000+ provided by special interest groups that have direct ties with big game hunting associations.

A true hunter doesn’t need an aircraft to chase down an animal until it can barely move to shoot it and a true biologist doesn’t present “facts” based on who gives them the most money.

There is a special place in HELLL for people of Vick's character...a very special place.

Also, I will boycott any and every attempt for him to play football again.

VICK WAS TREATED LIKE HE WAS SOME GD SERIAL MURDERER FOR GOD'S SAKE! UNFAIR UNFAIR UNFAIR!

BUT THAT'S TYPICAL FOR THE THUG SYNDICATE THERE IN ALEXANDRIA, VA. THEY ARE, OF ALL THE U.S. ATTY'S OFFICES IN THE COUNTRY, THE MOST UNETHICAL.

THEY OVERCHARGE AND MISLEAD JURIES DAILY, THAT IS THEIR STOCK IN TRADE. THEY DON'T KNOW, NEVER DID COMPREHEND, WHAT THE TERM "LEGAL ETHICS" MEANS.

Slightly off topic:
To anyone who is outraged by animal cruelty and neglect, if you buy a puppy from a pet store, chances are good that you are perpetuating cruelty and neglect.

Do a google search for "puppy mill" and you will see for yourself.

Another example of cruelty for the sake of entertainment and financial gain.

Posted by: FARFALLE44 | November 25, 2008 10:49 PM

It is true that humans eat animals: cows, pigs, dogs, chickens, cats, alligators and more. In some small societies, humans eat humans.

Vick wasn't convicted of butchering dogs to feed his family; he was convicted of fighting dogs for the purpose of entertainment. These dead dogs were not later prepared with veggies and gravy!

That said: the man served his time. Whether he is remorseful or not is up to his conscience. According to the law, that we all must live by, he will served his time in jail. After that, why shouldn't he be able to resume his life? The man plays football with other humans who get to make the decision to play a violent sport, unlike an animal who does not get a choice. It would be different if the man wanted to return to his job in a pet store after being convicted of torturing small animals. To say he should never be allowed to play football again means that your reason is ruled by your emotions.

Prosecutor only charges him with 3 of the multiple felonies that he admitted to. Then a sweetheart of a deal for the local protected - mega millionaire (before he screwed the pooch) spoiled arrogant above the law - son. Then at the plea hearing today the prosecutor hugs Vick's mom and tells her well at least this is over with.

Translation ... he's telling momma he really didn't want to charge her boy and gave the boy the best deal he possibly could ... let's move on.

Then laughs at the rest of the people of Virginia when he tells the press that he was only concerned with what the citizens of Surry County wanted ... despite the many crimes the Vick committed being State crimes ... in other words he should care what the entire state wants, but he chose to ignore the laws of the state and protect the "Protected Boy" from the laws of the state.

Ironic how the black multi millionaire athlete gets the sweetheart deal and a white man sits in jail in SC for over 40 years for the same type crimes. VA residents rise up and say Amen Brother!

And Alex hit the nail on the head. His only remorse is that he got caught.

J. Doyle:

This is not about race, I clearly stated that I wouldn't play that card here. I would play it if this article was about jail sentences for cocaine vs crack but it's not.
As for my use of the word "cracker". I feel that some of the white slave owners in the south during the plantation period of slavery were "crackers". Not just "crackers", but "cracker ass crackers". Those "crackers" called African Americans "nig.gers" and those "nig.gers" in turn referred to white people as "crackers". That's facts.
Now am I mad at white people because they might look like those "crackers" back then? NO! I have a lot of white friends. Who knows they may even be related to those "cracker ass crackers" who invented football, competing with big athletic "nig.ger" slaves in the first place! When I use the word cracker, it doesn't mean you or all white people(excluding Bush). Get over it man! Vick is the topic and race can always be used when it's a African American. I like how Obama looked past all the ignorance that came at him while running for president. I like that Koolaid! Tasty! So I am not saying racism on this one because Micheal Vick already knew he was a target being Black and successful he could have protected himself better. The man wasn't thinking. He actually has a history of bad decisions. Despite all that when Vick gets out, he should be able to return to football, because he paid his debts for his mistakes. Then he can come to the Raiders and restore our glory!

note: If there are any crackers out there that still do exist and I have offended you, I am not sorry!

I have read all the comments and here are my thoughts:
1. We need laws that actually help us get adopted instead of being put to sleep!
2. Can someone ensure Vick plays in the NFL and sends us a monthly doggy check so we can fund a neighborhood park where we can roam free and chase humans without being rounded up and sent to the pound?
3. Enact some real laws - no need for jail time- we need some real champions who can serve their time not in jail but in funding SPAC and animal shelters.
4. Lobby the UN to put sanctions against nations that eat dogs.
5. Let us vote!
6. I hear Barack Obama is looking for a dog? We need a lobbyist down in washington- maybe Vick can do that for us!

Seriously, I am impressed by the hypocrisy here.. but if y'all really care about us.. then come down to the nearest animal shelter and start adopting the meanest looking fellows down here .. they stand no chance in this doggy dog world of yours!

Peace to y'all! Now I got to find a tree in brooklyn.

some of yall say vick got what he deserves. what does bush deserve for sending our troops over to iraq and getting all those soldiers killed for some so called weapons of mass destruction that were never found. what does bush deserve for all the people in the world who are currently unemployed and struggling to support their families because he wanted to fight a war that our economy couldnt afford to fight. how many dogs were killed by vick compared to the soldiers we lost in this senseless war we are fighting. my answer. set vick free. compensate him for waisting his time with this bull charge and put bush in jail instead. i dont know if some of yall are mad at vick because of what he did or really mad cause your president is now black. some of yall need to get a life.

I'm not a big supporter of Gov. Palin, but get your facts straight! The issue with wolves stalking and KILLING people and livestock is a serious problem in many states where the wolf population has grown without appropriate regulation. Controlled harvesting of these beautiful but WILD animals is the only smart way to keep all concerned species safe.

Ummm the only one missing facts is you.

There are no people or livestock in rural Alaska where the hunting permits are being issued. Even the people supporting it, including Palin, aren’t stupid enough to make that claim.

They justify it by saying wolves are reducing the number of Caribou and Moose available for hunters to shoot for food. However, every statistic that has been produced, including those by Palin’s own appointed wildlife service’s directors, have shown that Caribou and Moose populations are down because of human over hunting, overdevelopment in migratory lands and not enough regulation on hunting permits, not because of wolf overhunting. Two predominant hunting groups have even come out against it saying that wolves are needed as they tend to hunt for the weak members of the Caribou and Moose herds which helps get rid of the sick animals that may contaminate the hunters if they were to eat them.

I'm glad to see the suspended jail term on the state charges. I don't advocate cruelty to animals (duh), but Vick's whole dogfighting imbroglio seems to me to have been cruelly overblown. He didn't start a war in which thousands of civilians lost their lives. He didn't batter his domestic partner. He didn't beat someone up outside a bar or rob someone in an alley or murder someone in a schoolyard because he felt "dissed".

I personally don't think that the Michael Vick story can be told without dealing with 1) an extremely talented young man's arrogance, 2) a young man's foolishness, which is common to young men, and 3) the issue of race.

As for the dogs, I strongly suspect that as an NFL quarterback Vick felt that those dogs were being placed into situations analogous to the situation in which he found himself behind center every Sunday.

How about a little less dog-sympathy and how about a little outrage about the extent to which it is an American football commonplace for one player to deliberately try to injure another.

:::end rant:::

phew, I feel better already

Its about laws that are meant to protect society and punish those that won't conform. Simple. And if you think the sentence is too harsh just because he hurt animals and not humans.. you are exactly the type of person this law is meant to deter. You know deter? TOWNBUSINESS: How can you seriously feel that you have any right to cry racism while at the same time using an epithet like 'cracker'? And do you not realize that labeling any instance of a percieved wrong as 'racism', no matter the cause, dilutes the word's meaning?
It's one thing when it is a real case of discrimination, which is obviously deplorable. But when it is merely a case where you didn't like the outcome of an event, yet label said outcome as racist regardless, all that means is you are the same as a bawling footstomping child who didn't get their way and is throwing a fit in a last ditch attempt. You are demeaning and insulting, as well as diminishing, all of those very real cases of actual racism. It also reminds me of this story - The Boy Who Cried Wolf. As a white person, I wish there was a word like 'racist' that I could use to label another that had the ability to scare others into silence when I didn't get my way, even, and especially, when it is absolutely baseless. I know it may be hard for you to believe, but people of all skin colors actually DO break the law and are then punished accordingly.
In reading the outcome of the case I can't see how the punishment can be considered racist at all - Vick got off easy: he recieved a suspended sentence, a plea bargain, and one charge was dropped completely. Was the only way the outcome could have been just and non-racist in your eyes to have been for all charges to be dropped and the court announce 'The court wants to sincerely apologize for the hardship brought to Mr. Vick and his entire extended family. The court did not realize that Mr. Vick was black. In light of the that fact, Mr. Vick has every right to torture, maim, and kill any animal he feels until every person of color in this country is in agreement that racism, from whites to those of color only, of course, no longer exists.'?
All this proves to me is that skin color isn't the common trait among those who participate in animal cruelty for profit and/or enjoyment; the common trait is ignorance and stupidity.

He should have been hit in his wallet not serving time in federal prison...rapist get less time...we're talking about dogs folks...not humans and I'm sorry but I agree with the person that said dogs belong outside in the yard...not sleeping on the bed or sofa...they are dogs, not humans. Another example of our unjust justice system.

Posted by: seriously? | November 25, 2008 5:34 PM

Vick got a harsh sentence because he is a public figure. And that makes sense. It gets everybody's attention, and encourages others to be law abiding. Most laws are enforced by voluntary citizen compliance, some by good conscience, some out of fear of criminal court consequence. Vick's sentence makes a lot of people glad they follow their conscience, and make others fear the possible consequences of not following their conscience.

All dogs are derived from Canis lupus the Gray Wolf.

“Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska and John McCain's vice presidential pick, is an enthusiastic hunter who has proposed legislation and cash incentives to encourage aerial wolf gunning, the controversial practice of shooting wolves from an aircraft.”

I know several people on this forum who are critical of Vick but are also huge Palin supporters in other forums.

So you have no problem with putting a dog killer in the White House but putting the organizer of dog fights back in the NFL is unacceptable?

Hypocrites!

Posted by: Southeasterner | November 25, 2008 5:06 PM

I'm not retarded...and stop running away from RACE. What in the heck do you think drives this anger? Vick thinks he can get away with anything? What idiot really believes that? White's are brainwashed into thinking black athletes are spoiled, selfish, think they get away...blah..blah..blah. All of those are stereotypes and far from the truth. Black jocks know they are....BLACK!!

Folks don't like to talk about race becasue it hurts. The truth hurts. You can hide behind.."race has nothing to do with it" all you want. btw, Black have been hung by their necks by Klansmen...and oh yeah Robert Byrd was a former Klansmen. Yet, he cries about a dog being hung.

Posted by: KDog | November 25, 2008 4:45 PM

My last comment

As a African American I won't play the race card on this one. But I can't help to think that football could have started on a plantation back in the day when some old cracker bet his slaves were stronger and faster? Maybe Vick just wanted his own winning team?

Posted by: TownBusiness | November 25, 2008 4:44 PM

You think race and fame go him an easy sentence. HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE SERVING FEDERAL TIME FOR DOG FIGHTING? You don't like football, and that's OK. What about the white collar criminals that have affected our economy? Why are they not villified like Vick? You can't believe that race has not played a part in the way this was persued? He broke the law, and should serve his time....but let's be honest, the public outrage was because he is a famous black athlete that has not always been "Mr. Public Relations". To those that watch sports, atheltes are like our artists, great writers, actors, etc. They enrichen our lives, so just because it is a "game" does not mean that it does not play a valuable role in our society.

Posted by: DC MAN | November 25, 2008 4:39 PM

What's the fuss here? The man committed a crime as defined by federal and state law. He was tried, he was convicted, he goes to prison. Case closed. And for the bird-brains who think this is white people getting even with a black man for abusing their dogs: white people are in prison for animal abuse, running puppy mills, and numerous other abuses of animals. Torture is inhumane, it doesn't matter what you're torturing. People who think torture of animals is our privilege are sick-minded, amoral, and psychopathic.

Posted by: buffalohead | November 25, 2008 4:37 PM

Vick deserves every bit of jail time he's served and will serve.

But is it too much to wish that 80 percent of the people who have ruined this country, this economy and thousands of lives - human and animal - over the last few years could be held half as accountable as Vick has been?

Posted by: roje | November 25, 2008 4:36 PM

Yo, Marine Gunny

YOU don't speak for all the military, either. Take that uber-patriot, wrapped-in-the-flag. holier-than-thou ignorant attitude of yours and put it where the sun don't shine ...

Hell, even a Gunnery Sgt s/b able to figure out the rest of that one, despite the lowered standards.

Posted by: NamVet | November 25, 2008 4:35 PM

I
A: don't like football, too violent
B: don't like the adoration people get because they can throw a ball
C: think that people who are cruel to animals are next to people who are cruel to children
D: think adults (children too, for that matter) should suffer the consequences of their actions
E: think that the law has consequences
F: think that if anything, race and fame are responsible for the mildness of the sentence
G: And think fame is responsible for Vick's attitude that he can get away with anything.
H: Don't hunt, or go to horse or dog races (too cruel)
I: Love my dog, but he's a dog, not allowed on the furniture, and has to mind.

So forget Vick and do something good for the world.

Posted by: notafan | November 25, 2008 4:30 PM

Hey KDOG how about you go through some of the pain and starvation those dogs did and see how you like it. I hope you know that animals can feel pain and hunger just like a human. Oh and how about you get hung up by the neck like some of those dogs.

For the sake of anyone that knows you I hope they know how you feel about animals, just so you know if you have no compassion for animals more then likely you have no compassion for humans (Physiology 101).

J. Doyle u talking to me?

I have rode horses for years! I have taken people out on horseback rides. I can ride English, Bareback and Western Saddle. I have also raise Rottweiler's. Been to a few dog fights too. Please believe like a competitive horse who wants to win, there are some pit bulls that don't like to lose. You are right,It is how you train the animal. What I find funny is that all you animal rights people out here are violent as hell! You think the man killed a white baby! J. Doyle I bet a shiny Amero that if you spit on Micheal Vick, he would beat yo ass! Your talk is cheap and you use your real name because you were never cool.

Posted by: TownBusiness | November 25, 2008 4:28 PM

I am so tired of people that care more about dogs than human beings. The man made mistakes and served his time. I hope that he gets a chance to make money in his chosen career, and I would pay to see him play. So much about this is the hate, envy that many have toward young rich (and in many cases black) athletes. You don't understand why they make so much, or why they don't go to class in college. Its because everyone else is making millions charging sports fans to watch them and wear their jersey. To the guy that referred to him as a "monkey" that should be executed. You obviously think that killing animals is fine as long as it is an African American. You are an idiot...and probably a Palin loving racist.

This is to you KDOG and to all of those of yoy who think Michael Vick is some kind of hero.

You are a bunch of ignorant slobs. How dare you say they are just dogs. I would love to have done to you what Michael Vick and his "pals" did to those poor animals. You should be chained to a chain and beaten just like they were and then strapped to a contraption and then were raped by a bigger dog and then you should have all your teeth taken out so all you can eat is soft food, that is if they even give you food.

Dogs are sure a lot better than you are.

Posted by: Dogs are better than people | November 25, 2008 4:13 PM

My fervent hope is that the NFL reinstates this slob and that during his first game some buffoon with a gun blows his skull apart.

Have a nice day.

Posted by: Kase | November 25, 2008 4:12 PM

- A human being's life should always be initially valued above all other creatures, and then adjusted according to their respect for all life.
- A dog is only as violent as it is trained/abused to be, no matter the breed. I've been with pit bulls that are teddy bears and around poodles that are mean and violent as hell.
- The most consistent trait common to serial killers: a history of animal abuse. A society that ignores that fact does so at it's own peril.
- It is really, really easy to say one has 'found' God, quite another to actually have done so.
- I personally would spit on Vick if I saw him, but when he finishes his time, he has been punished according to the law. However, he does NOT have some inalienable and protected right to play football and while the state can not limit his ability to do so, the NFL certainly can. He can get a real job like everyone else - if the NFL won't have him. Hell, he could try to get a job at a slaughterhouse if he misses his past hobby so much.
- Nor is the rest of the world required to forget his past actions just because the state has determined he has paid for his crime.
- Any person who is assaulted by another has recourse through the courts, an animal has no such option.
- I am not a violent person and never have been, but if I found someone abusing my animals, I would have no qualms in unlimited, brutal, slow, painful, and thorough retribution.
- Controling an animal population, and thereby mitigating overpopulation and slow death by starvation, through hunting, is entirely different from torturing animals for sadistic enjoyment. So is raising livestock - farmers go out of their way to humanely slaughter an animal if only because the chemicals released while in pain/fear ruin the texture of the meat.
- To those comparing what Vick did to horse racing, yes there are cruel jockeys, but the smart/good/winning ones know that a horse races better because they WANT to win, most horses really like to race; the ones that win certainly do. If you haven't been on a horse before don't assume you have any idea what it, or a horse, is like. Plus, if a horse breaks it's leg, and it doesn't heal properly, the horse will die a long, slow and painful death - and it is the rare case when vets are able to save a horse with a broken leg.
- If Vick has the right to try to get back into football, the NFL has the same right to refuse his ability to do so.

Man enough to use my own name,

J. Doyle

People....they were just friggin dogs!!! Pitbulls...White folks have been fighting cocks and dogs for over 200 years. It's a hillbilly, redneck, country boy thing. Now, this hip hop generation gets caught up in it with these drug protecting pitbulls and no all of a sudden it's the worst crime since the "holocaust". smh..smh...smh

People are never fair and honest when it comes to the perception and treatment of black people. Especially the high paid athletes. It's alllllll just HATE!! Deep rooted jealousy!!

Dog lovers need to get a life. Learn to love people...stop kissing your dogs in the mouth and protesting just to get a date with another dog freak. I still contend that the main motivation behind Vick demise is typical Black Athlete Hate that's spreading the country. It's nothing but jealousy of the Black athlete. How pathetic!!

Posted by: kdog | November 25, 2008 3:51 PM

How about the Browns? He can join forces with the dogs in Ohio. Would that make everyone happy?

Posted by: TownBusiness | November 25, 2008 3:46 PM

White folks and there dogs. smh...smh...smh.

If Vick were the All American white boy who made a mistake doing jail time would be enough to these PETA dog lovers. But, I THINK [I could be wrong] that Vick being black and sooooo sooo hip hop...tatoos, braids and all, many dog lovers will feel they have a license to continue. Until society says enough..i.e. talk radio, print media, t.v. documentaries etc,..until these forces get off of his case the psycho dog loving people hating folks with no life will continue their BS.

Gordon Geico from the movie "Wall Street":
"WASP..love their friggin pets more than they love people".

Leave Mike Vick alone...btw, he is not broke. Don't fool yourselves.

Bottom line is it IS animal abuse and one of the worse kinds. That first post from town business was very ignorant. It is people like him that have no respect for animals and don't care if dog fights and the sort go on. Well how about I starve you, treat you like dirt, and put you in a fight to the death with some other starved and beaten creature?

What a colossal waste of taxpayer money in filing these state charges! What was the point? If he wasn't so famous, he'd be out of jail a long time ago for a matter that's been way, way, blown out of all proportion to the actual harm.

Posted by: Kevin | November 25, 2008 3:05 PM

You're kidding right? Kick yourself you jerk. This man was torturing these creatures when they didn't perform well. He deserves far more time than 23 months and if the NFL takes him back they are an affiliation filled with a larger bunch of testerone laden greed infected monsters than previously thought. The acceptance of this type of behavior from these spoiled rotten over indulged overpaid brutes playing at being human has to stop.

I was just speaking to Nick G about him saying, Vick looks like a drug dealer when in fact he is a college educated football player. I'm not saying he was smart,or not deserving his punishment. I just don't agree with the drug part of his post. I do think that drugs are big business and people are selling whatever to whoever legally while Vick gets all this unnecessary media attention for some damn dogs. Hey Nick G when you get checked out send some of that good stuff my way! When Vick gets out he is going to play for the Raiders and restore the glory of the Silver and Black. Until then I am going out to kick a dog in honor of Mr Vick.

Posted by: Anonymous | November 25, 2008 2:38 PM

The question is whether a man who has committed an act of moral turpitude and has since completed his sentence be allowed to return to the NFL. Given the dictates of our societal rules, the answer should be yes. This has nothing to do with race, it is merely a question of the consequences of one's actions involving a legal and moral crime.

However, the more practical question is whether a particular team will want his services based upon his ability, his salary, and the reaction of its fan base to hiring him. This is the truly weighty issue.

Drug dealing is big business. You should check out the Veterans hospital and see what they got for you. As for Vick and drugs: He has admitted to having a drug problem an is in rehab right now for it. I just asked what a drug dealer looked like? I never said anything about black or white, that's all you. I can see how you get down, shoot first ask questions last or talk first and then think about it later. Good luck Nick G! I cant help u anymore.

So because a professional athelete does it who has has plenty of notariety and money does not make it a harsher and more punishable crime!!

Him not playing in the NFL again is not just. If he gets fired from one team then he can tryout for another. Now if no team wants him that is a differnt story than him not being able to be in the NFL at all. If I was a lawyer I would not think the firm would hire me back, but I did not loose my rights to be one than I should be able to apply to a differnt firm. Just that plain.
A dogs life is nothing compared to a humans not even close, so all you who say he needs to burn in hell need to grow up.

Vick got off with a slap on the wrist. Dog fighters convicted on substantively identical facts are serving sentences of 40, 48, and 102 years, respectively.

Nobody who drowns, HANGS, shoots, and fights that many dogs should ever walk free in society again.

If he plays in the NFL I will never watch another NFL game, buy another ticket, or buy any NFL merchandise. EVer. Period.

Everyone in these comments who supports him, just picture a dog, who trusted Vick, slowly suffocating while being HUNG from a noose, while Vick sits there and laughs and counts his illegal gambling money. Do you support that? Maybe you do.

Michael will serve the time, the courts have sentenced him. When the time is up, his sentence is OVER. Stop beating him up...over and over again...like any of you have lead such a PERFECT life and walked such a perfectly straight line.
There is no sin greater than any other sin in the eyes of God. When asked, ALL IS FORGIVEN by our precious Lord. Michael has asked for forgiveness from God, and he has gone as far as to ask forgiveness from everyone else too. I am Thankful that those of you with the anger and hate...are Not acting for God!
I look forward to seeing Michael Vick play FOOTBALL again.....the teams that choose not to play him....well "its YOUR LOSS!" ohhh maybe those teams should check out the backgrounds of all their players....hummmm you most likely will have NO TEAM MEMBERS left to Play....hummmmm

Neglect your kids, beat your wife, sell prescription drugs online, believe everything they tell you on T.V. Then buy a house, lose a house, lose a job and then rob somebody. But whatever you do, Whatever you do, don't kick the dog! Let this be a message to all you millionaires out there trying to hustle on the side. Big brother is watching you. Cocaine: good, Dog fighting: not good. Today Bush pardon hip hop failure John Forte and he got caught with over a million bucks in liquid cocaine, and he will be home for Kwanzaa this year! I will say this one last time. What ever you do just don't kick the d@amn dog. Really go to the horse track and bet on Mr Ed and when that horse breaks his ankles cause some lil man was on his back beating him with a stick to run in circles enjoy it. Or grab a bull and tie his testicles to his tail and jump on his back and see how long you stay on, or chase a baby cow and see how fast you can tie it up. Drop a car wash token in a homeless persons cup when they ask for change and tell em you voted for Obama. Then go to the navy and learn how to kill water mammals with sonar technology. What happen to the good ole days when you could shoot a buffalo to starve out a community? Who needs a flying pigeon I got a cell phone. I hear KFC now delivers abused overcrowded no beak, genetic altered chickens. My over developed five year old daughter loves KFC. We went there after buying her a bra and I don't mind picking a few feathers growing off her back. This I can deal with, but dog fighting is where I draw the line. Burn in hell Vick, but first, can I have a picture and autograph?

Mike Vick commited a crime and did serve time. Separate your emotions from the actual crime. Don't get me wrong, he is scum, but did serve his time. I do believe that he should not be allowed back in the NFL as he soiled their name. If you worked for a firm and were put in jail for 2 years, would you expect that company to welcome you back. No way. If this is his "only" skill, take it to Canada etc. What did he do at Virginia Tech? Didn't he have classes? Go back to school. Get your degree and get a job. Is is rediculious to think that he should be welcomed back into the NFL. Also, what kind of fool spends more than he has or is worth. Mike Vick and all the other as&holes who put our economy in the position it is in. Bail out those who do the right thing. Not those who are fools!!

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE SUCH HATE TOWARDS A MAN THAT WAS CONVICTED AND IS SERVING HIS TIME? HE WAS FOUND GUILTY AND THAT STILL NOT ENOUGH, WHY IS THAT? HONESTLY I THINK IT'S JUST A NATURAL HATRED FOR BLACK MEN (SOME POEPLE JUST CANT HELP IT) WE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN BE FOUND GUILTY, SERVE OUR TIME AND STILL BE LOOKED DOWN UPON. ESPECIALLY WHEN PEOPLE SAY HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO HIS JOB AGAIN. NOW LETS JUST IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE FUCKED UP BEFORE, DOES IT MAKE SENSE FOR YOU NOT TO BE ABLE TO WORK IN YOUR PROFESSION AGAIN? EVEN IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO JAIL, OF COURSE NOT...... BUT THAT'S AMERICA'S DOUBLE STANDARD. WHAT THEY CAN DO AND HAVE BEEN GETTIN AWAY WITH FOR YEARS WE CAN'T DO ONCE WITHOUT HAVING THE BOOK THROWN AT US. AFTER ALL THE BOOKS I'VE READ ABOUT RAISING PIT BULLS I'M PRETTY SURE MANY OF THE STUDS AND GRANDMASTER CHAMPION DOGS WERE BEING BRED BY MANY FOLKS BUT ESPECIALLY POOR SOUTHERN WHITE HICKS WHO LOOKED AT DOG FIGHTS AS A SOURCE OF INCOME. IT IS A BIG BUSINESS IN THE SOUTH. AS A MATTER OF FACT SOUTHERNERS, WHITE AND BLACK, ARE THE MAIN PARTICIPANTS, WHETHER IN THE AUDIENCE OR BREEDERS. SO FOR VICK TO BE LOOKED AT LIKE HE'S MURDERED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ('CAUSE PEOPLE ARE BASICALLY ASKING FOR VICKS HEAD) THIS ILLEGAL ACT WAS PUBLISHED AND SOLD FOR YEARS (NOT BY BLACK FOLKS) TO MAKE MONEY BY DOG FIGHTING AND BOOK SALES. SO WHO'S REALLY THE CRIMINAL? BUT THIS IS AMERICA'S WAY, JUST LIKE DRUGS...... SLAPS ON THE WRIST FOR SOME, BUT THE BOOK THROWN AT OTHERS. AND BLACK OR WHITE WHO IN THE HELL REALLY CARES WHAT THE NEXT MAN HAS DONE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT AFFECT ANYBODY DIRECTLY BUT VICK AND HIS FAMILY, LET'S JUST KEEP IT REAL PEOPLE, AND GET OFF THE HIGH HORSES AND LOOK AT OUR OWN MISTAKES.

Bloc ---- are you insane, or just plain stupid? Mike Vick "deliberately" allowed the dogs to be ----"tortured". That's NOT in any stretch of the imagination, the same as farm animals being slaughtered, for food. NO excuse for "torturing" any animal. God, I pray he isn't allowed to own ANY pet himself. He's sadistic, & has NO morals, & there's NO excuse for his cruel actions. He has sufficient brains & brawn to play football, so he isn't mentally-incopacitated. He was well aware of what he was doing ---- for money & HIS sick pleasure. God will punish him!

PEOPLE LIKE "rot in h*ll Vick!" ARE SO IGNORANT...HE'S SICK FOR FIGHTING DOGS BUT YOU WOULD PAY MONEY TO SEE HIM GET DOUSED IN GASOLINE AND LIT ON FIRE? GENIUS! SAYS ALOT ABOUT U AND YOUR CHARACTER...BUT I BET YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE A MUCH BETTER PERSON THAN MIKE VICK COULD EVER BE! U R THE REAL DOUCHBAG HERE...
LISTEN, AT THE END OF THE DAY, I DO BELIEVE WHOLE-HEARTEDLY THAT WHAT VICK DID TO THE DOGS WAS A HORRIBLE CRIME. A CRIME, FOR WHICH HE HAS BEEN SENTENCED AND SERVING HIS TIME IN A FEDERAL PRISON SYSTEM....A MAN THAT COMMITS A BANK ROBBERY (A FEDERAL CRIME) AND WAS A MECHANIC BEFORE HE COMMITTED THE ROBBERY, SHOULD HE NOT BE ABLE TO BE A MECHANIC AFTER HE HAS SERVED HIS SENTENCE IN A FEDERAL PRISON SYSTEM? THE ANSWER IS YES!!!! FOOTBALL IS HIS CAREER, HIS MEANS OF SURVIVAL (SO TO SPEAK), HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY FOOTBALL AGAIN, HAVE SOME SORT OF MANDATORY INTERACTION WITH ANIMALS (SUPERVISED) AND PAY AN ADDITIONAL FINE.....

I think the comments about racism are mostly being pointed at the fact there is a clear lack of humanity when looking at this case. I dont minimize the cruelty to animals, I also think the judge sentenced him correctly. But now that we are looking at Vick getting out it seem odd to me that people would want him dead. I appears to me that some value the life of a dog over a human.

Posted by: Dave from D.C | November 25, 2008 1:38 PM

Wow as a pet owner I am disappointed that these things go on, but me being disappointed doesn't do a thing; neither does wishing someone to become a drug dealer and death. Your hatred is not towards his actions but moreso towards his color and your underlining racism. If you substitute with anyone of another race or a family member you would not feel as strongly as you do. But I agree that most people give pets more rights than people in some cases which is absurd.

Posted by: Kevin from NY | November 25, 2008 1:34 PM

How sad. Not to recognize inhumanity and brutish behavior as exactly that because it was just a dumb dog. Animal abusers usually have little problem in imposing their evil natures against mainstream society as well. Vick was fortunate to be caught before his crimes escalated. Those of you who write to say "it's no big deal" please get an education. And it's clear the observations about racism are correct, the social malcontents are exuding the racism.

This is from OUR federal laws...

[Animal fighting venture, prohibition. 7 USC 2156.]

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly sponsor or exhibit any animal in any animal fighting venture to which any animal was moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
b) It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly sell, buy, transport, or deliver to another person or receive from another person for purposes of transportation, in interstate for foreign commerce, any dog or other animal for purposes of having the dog or other animal participate in an animal fighting venture.

Any person who violates subsection (a), (b), or (c) shall be fined not more than $5,000 or imprisoned for not more than 1 year, or both, for each such violation.

So, bottom line, it doesn't really matter how we feel about the way Mr. Vick has been treated. Looking at the law, it appears that he received a sentence that is consitent with the law (he had multiple counts, hence multiple years in prison). As long as he is jail, he will be a criminal. Upon his release, he will be a reformed citizen who can no longer vote or be in possession of a firearm.

The court of public opinion does not yet have the right to decide if Vick has changed his ways. After July 2009 Vick will have tremendous pressure to demonstrate through his actions (NOT WORDS) that he has matured beyond his dog fighting days. Real men accept their mistakes and make deliberate attempts to better themselves based on the lessons they have learned.

Maybe he can play for Belacheat, the NFL has no sence of right or wrong so its a perfect match, a loser playing for a cheater, perfect! And just how much money did they pay this idiot? Losing respect doesn't seem to have a pricetag so i'm sure the nitwits at the NFL will let him back in. He should call his new team

James Horne- Go back to watching your NFL network....stupid a%$, you miss the point. You probably have too many NFL logos swirling around in that pea brain and has clouded you couch potato judgement.

Posted by: 3dx | November 25, 2008 1:20 PM

Dogs have been "man's best friend" forever. To deliberately tortune & kill these beloved animals, is beyond belief. Vick did it strictly for the ---- MONEY,& perhaps --- even love of cruelty to animals, & had NO feeling of remorse --- knowing how the animals were forced to suffer. Cow, pigs, & other animals killed for human food -----are NOT tortured for game-sport& betting. Vick is a total disgrace, not only to his race, but to all society. I hope he's NEVER allowed to earn money, by playing football again. Has he ever felt the excruciating-pain by being chewed-up by a dog? I doubt it.

Posted by: Nena Silver | November 25, 2008 1:16 PM

Roger Goodell should slap him with a lifetime suspension, did you read over the weekend that Vick was personally at fights where he used PETS for the pitbulls to rip to shred and he and his friends laughed about it. Go ahead, check out the confidential documents from witnesses in his case which were just released on Friday. He's a really bad seed.
Vick will be "hounded" wherever he goes, animal lovers will not let him or the NFL ever forget the barbaric things he did to all those innocent creatures.
He will be haunted by this forever.

Nick G you sound like you have alot of hate in your life.

Posted by: Dave from D.C | November 25, 2008 1:14 PM

Honestly, I am surprised that there are so many bloggers responding to this trivial matter. I had never heard of Michael Vick until this dog incident, so I am not a fan. I am sorry for some of you who are crying that a few dogs got killed in a brutal way. It would be nice if people would blog the same way when a woman gets brutally raped and murder and her assailant only get 6 months.

I guess the charge is that Mike is ignorant and I am sure the ones who have made that claim are not basing it on his actions but his color. I believe he was stupid for getting involved in dog fighting when he knew that white america love dogs more than man. But those ignorant white americans that hunt moose, birds, and rabbits, as a sport and for fun should not judge Mike both of you are killing animals that you deem is not as valuable as yours.

Everyone's perception is different. I think what Mike did was wrong under the law. But I do not think he should be killed, maimed, slaughtered for some dangerous and vicious dogs.

Furthermore, for some of you who believe that he should not be able to be a NFL football player that is quite stupid and ignorant. I am sure if one of you happened to get caught for a crime that you committed you would not want your boss to monopolized the only skill you have by saying that you can't return to work as a accountant, a paralegal, a customer representative, a doctor esp. if the crime you committed was not during work hours or violated work policies.

Posted by: Billy | November 25, 2008 1:14 PM

Can anyone tell me what the big deal is with killing dogs? I mean what the hell, they are soulless additions to this planet and here to do as we tell them, and we do as we wish with them. They don't need rights. Gay Humans don't even have as many rights as piece of trash dogs do.

Posted by: Jonat | November 25, 2008 1:13 PM

If the punishment was too severe or not servere enough is not the point.the point is he did the time and now people still want him dead, hanged and mauled. Where is the value for human life. Is no one redeemable? And I do feel there is a racial undertone to some of the comments. Would you feel this strongly if I told yo Ted Nugent had dog fights on his property, or how about over there on the Bush ranch in Tx. Would you want him dead?

You people are saying that they eat dogs in other contries u might have a little point. But they eat their dogs because there is no Mcdonalds or BK for them to eat thats there version of a cow for us. . You Vick supporters need to go to a Dog fight and watch it for your self not just the fighting but the behind the seane the cages the contant beating by big fat county hicks. You would cry like a baby hearing all the dog in pain. Trust me. And as for ZORO I am MARINE. Keep your mouth shut and enjoy your freedom buddy or move to china and see what happens they might just cook you up and eat you. F*& VICK and all the pple that think he sould play again. Yhea he might of done his time but no NFL ever again. Go work for GREEN PEACE or just be a drug dealer (he looks like one anyway). He will be back in jail soon. Hope he dies in jail or in the mouth of a PITBULL with a couple of ROTTWILLERS too. I would pay perview to see that. paybacks a bitc&.

Michael Vick. Too delicate to be a running back, not a good enough arm to play quarterback. In the NFL, as a quarterback, he's a bit of a curiosity--kind of like Randall Cunningham. As ill-suited to be an NFL quarter (but for different reasons) as Tony Eason or Ryan Leaf. Cut an unpromising career short by brutalizing and killing domesticated animals for sport.

... and now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

The people who insist on turning this into a race issue do their own 'people' a grave disservice. Sadism is not a black thing. There are plenty of blacks who know that cruelty is wrong no matter who is on the receiving end of it. What Michael Vick and his associates did is unjustifiable. Dogs have feelings and do not deserve to be beaten, electrocuted, or hung until they are dead. Dog fighting is a felony. Stop whining about it and start doing something constructive for your community. You really are scraping the bottom of the desperation barrel by playing the victim over this. Vick had more opportunity than most people, black or white, could ever dream of in a lifetime. He was stupid, selfish and sadistic. Vick blew it, and he deserves to experience the FULL consequences of his actions.

Posted by: Woof2U | November 25, 2008 1:06 PM

I could care less about his dog fighting career, it saddens me more that he had an even brighter future in the NFL that was ruined for some mangy animals. Animals are in no way shape or form the same as humans. They are slightly intelligent companions to us and nothing more. Someone shouldn't have their life ruined for some damn dogs, which otherwise would have had an boring life not fighting.

DOG fighting is ILLEGAL... HELLO! oh let the man get a Pass because he's Black(even if he's super wealthy and the act was illegal in 48 states!!)...The 'WHITE mans' pet... i see as many people 'of color ' walking thier dogs around my nieghborhood as anyone else...now who's the BIGOT...rage?...yes you should be ashamed for Vick all the people pulling this kind a crap for money..or should we say GREED. If yes IF Bret Farve got caught doing the same...send him to prison as well...Good Luck RAGE>>>

"Vick's attorneys have indicated in bankruptcy court proceedings that he expects to play in the NFL again". He can expect all he wants. Doens't mean his expecations will be met. I seriously hope they aren't. He can say he is remorseful all he wants, he needs to show it.

Posted by: Skinsfan22303 | November 25, 2008 1:03 PM

It's a terrible thing that he did. Not that it happened to "just a dog" but the scarey part his..he was able to hold a living thing under water until it died. He was able to tie a rope around a breathing thing and watch it suffocate or it's neck break and DIE. Did we forget that he KILLED. He did'nt spank it, he did'nt forget to give it water or food for a few days...HE KILLED IT.

When he is out of prison and done with his parole. HE IS A FREE MAN. HE SERVED HIS TIME IN THE EYES OF THE LAW. If they want to let him back in to play football, so be it. Don't watch.

My child is not made to believe that because someone is famous, they are made of gold. He is a normal man with some great talents that happened to be on t.v.. If he does something wrong, the courts will decide what is fair punishment. If you do not agree with it, help change the law. Pretty cut and dry.

Stop with all the eye for an eye and because he is black...dont like it...change it..if you do nothing about what you feel is wrong...why do you complain about it. Is'nt that the same as agreeing with it?

Posted by: burger lover | November 25, 2008 1:02 PM

Rage, I think you're missing a point here. Hunting is legal (during hunting season, and on land where hunting is allowed). Wearing a fur coat is legal. Running a dog fighting concern is not legal. You're comparing apples and hand grenades. Based on minimum and maximum sentences for the crimes Vick was charged with, He got off with nothing--he pled all the state charges down to a single guilty plea and a suspended sentence. Compare that to the time Martha Stewart spent in prison for dumping stocks, a crime where no living being is cruelly put to death, and the 23-month federal sentence is a piece of cake. I noticed, by the way, you were careful to avoid the methods employed by Vick to kill dogs that were either wounded or not good fighters. Would you care to outline those methods and then argue the level of humanity exhibited by Vick compared to say, Favre's method of killing an animal when he is hunting? I didn't think so.

All you people out there saying that you will never watch football again because of what Vick did were never football fans in the first place. Football will not miss what it never had. Vick did a crime was punished for it and he has shown remorse for what he did. He can't please those that had issue with him from the start so your hateful comments are understood. And those of you who want to see Vick harmed in and way need to get a life preferably on another planet.

Posted by: human being | November 25, 2008 1:00 PM

Some of these comments are absolutely insane. It doesn't matter if you agree with the law or not. Vick knew the limits and details of the law and chose not to follow them. Anyone else found contributing to dog fighting, hanging, etc... would also be punished according to the law. If you don't agree with the laws as they are... petition and try to make a change, or go somewhere else.

This issue has deep wounds in the black community. Right in front of our eyes we saw one of our sports heroes abolished by society because of fighting animals. While horse racing still exists, and hunting as a sport still exists. Thousands of people walk around every day in furs and other materials made from killing animals. People in China eat dog as food. Let's get something straight, a DOG is a DOG! We hold them in the same regard as those horses who we inject with steroids and run them around the race track for pleasure. This case was a clear example of why the Dred Scott decision still haunts blacks. We still have less rights than even a DOG. The white man's favorite pet. Why was Micheal Vick convicted and not Brett Favre who raves about his hunting expeditions. This just goes to show that we have a long way to go even after choosing Mr. Obama as our president.

Posted by: Rage | November 25, 2008 12:46 PM

Mr. Vick made serious mistakes but once he serves his time his debt to society has been paid and his slate has been wiped clean. As such, the rare athletic gifts that he has, I look forward to seeing again. He is not my role model, nor do I view any athelete or celebrity as a role model he is human just like you; just like me!

Posted by: Ralston | November 25, 2008 12:45 PM

I understand that a lot of dog owners/animal right activist think that what he has done is wrong.
Have you ever been to a meat processing plant, chicken factory or evening a researching university...? I know the answer is no...
If you got close to the facility the smell a half mile away would make you deafly ill and you wouldn't be able to go any further to get close enough to see what I’m talking about. Have you ever processed a deer or any animal in you home kitchen? I know the answer is no. You are basically saying you want to be vegetarian, it’s gross or that you would never eat something after you watch it being butchered. Isn't that hypocritical? The animal rights need to be pushed across the board for all animals, but people have to eat so you argument would be a stupid argument. If you going to favor one animal over another isn't that discrimination, Isn't that something we are fighting as humans every day, Equal right for all?
If you favor one piece of pie over another slice of the same pie, then you are corrupted and you are benefiting from an underlying motive, like a politicians and/or Preachers. You make a big deal out of a good cause and distort it so you can profit from it.

Hasn't anyone listened to what great human right activists have fought and died for... See this is the same reason that the US is a bad idea gone worst. Everyone has a motive and an idea of taking advantage of the system and bend it to their own wants and needs. They don't care who or what it hurts because they have been taught corruption, then everyone starts doing it and over time it become a normal everyday thing and no one is the wiser except the people that migrate away and do it differently... They get told well everyone else is doing it you can to... If you do it you are then corrupted and add to the problem. If you don't do it, you are restricted and criticized by it if you don't speak to be heard. If you live with it and allow it to go on then you are just as bad.

As a nation we need to start doing what's right not what's going to make us rich. The worst thing about capitalism is greed because money corrupts all. I do believe that there are motives that haven’t come to light and I know dog fighting is wrong but this is a problem that was blown out of proportion from the beginning.

I know that there are worst than this out there check how they beat a horse to train them… Circus animals lots of other problems that are not being held accountable. So if you going to hold one accountable then hold all accountable!!!

Posted by: Bloc | November 25, 2008 12:44 PM

Ford, Chrystler and GM should be abolished! They encourage the slaughter of cows for their leather interiors.

McDonald's should be abolished! They also encourage the slaughter of cows so mindless lemmings will come in and buy their processed mystery meat.

Starkist should be abolished! They encourage the slaugher of tuna for their "Sorry Charlie" can-shapped paper-weights.

Ikea should be abolished! They encourage the construction of sub-standard products! Oh wait... that doesn't fit the agenda. Abolish them anyway!

He should be able to show that he has paid for his mistakes and that will be able to move forward with his life as a result of his admission of guilt, encarceration and penalties. If he is truly remorseful, he should speak on behalf of animal rights or do something to that extent. He has a real chance to make a difference and show kids what a real role model does. He can really redeem himself and show his remorse is not only based on the money he has lost, but on the effects his lifestyle and decisions had on other people who belived in him.

I agree, that saying Vick should die is a teriible thing, lets not forget what he did and what he knew about, with no remorse in the beginning. I'm from the south and NO that's not the rule of thumb. It is not common practice to:

funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs."

Vick, Peace and Phillips hung approximately three dogs who did not perform well in a "rolling session," which indicates the readiness of a dog to fight.
(the three men hung the dogs "by placing a nylon cord over a 2 X 4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed.)

They also drowned approximately three dogs by putting the dogs' heads in a five gallon bucket of water."

Vick admitted taking part in the actual hanging of the dogs."

Vick, Peace and Phillips buried the dogs themselves.

WE AS AMERICA DO NOT CARE MORE FOR DOGS THAN HUMANS. WE PUT HIM IN JAIL B/C HE DID SOMETHING THAT WAS AGAINST THE LAW.

BECAUSE I EAT LAMB DOES NOT MEAN..IT'S OK FOR ME TO HANG A LIVING THING FROM A TREE.

This forum goes from one extreme to another.

Yes there are other countries that eat dogs but there are countries that stone you in the streets for stealing food. Come on people...he violated the law and is serving his sentence. Plain and simple.

Posted by: Deserved | November 25, 2008 12:27 PM

He should be treated the same way he treated those poor animals. He should be made to run on a treadmill, raped, chained up and let other people punch, bite, kick, cut him, and then let him lay and suffer each day , until the next day, then start over again. He is NOT sorry!! He's sorry he got caught and lost his millions (which he is LUCKY he was getting, because he's too ignorant to make money doing anything else). He didn't make a mistake!! A mistake is something you do without meaning to. He sure as hell meant to do what he did to those dogs everyday, just for money! He's a greedy S.O.B. who made money off of another living thing's suffering and painful death! He's sick, and all the people who think he did nothing wrong are as sick. Too many of you in this world.

Aint we all live in this world so called "Animal Kingdom", So Vick has his right to be in this Animals Kingdom, the problem is that we human think we know better than any other creature in this Kingdom.

Posted by: samjake | November 25, 2008 12:24 PM

I'm not an animal rights activist by any means but I do see the difference between hurting man's best friend and eating cows.

Vick should not be allowed to play simply to make an example and show others that this type of behavior cannot go unpunished.

Enforcing this policy is not racist. It's simply a matter of a guilty man being held accountable.

I agree with the idea that he should be allowed to get on with his life. But football should no longer be an option for him. I'm sure that if he feels as guilty as he sounds, football will not satisfy his apparent hunger for redemption anyway.

Punishment for guilty African Americans does not imply racism.

Posted by: reason | November 25, 2008 12:22 PM

ACE, You miss the point. There is nothing inherently wrong with using animals for human purposes such as food or clothing. However, the fact that animals have to endure unnecessary and inhuman cruelty is a separate issue. What Vick did was wrong, and revealed something very scary about himself. No regard for life. I hope someone ends his football career soon. Either on or off the field.

I read several post where people have said they want to see vick dead, killed by dogs, doued in gasoline, etc. At some point do we not have to say himan life is more valuable than animals. I also feel an undercurrentl of racism is sevral oof these comments. I undestand the outrage many have with Vick's guilty admission in this case. I was never a Vick fan and believe that he didn't represent the NFL very well either.

On the flip side, we are a nation of forgiving people. I'd like to think that prison and personal loss have molded Vick into a better man. As far as football is concerned, I really don't care if he plays again. If he's fortunate enough to find a spot then he should play. Hasn't he done his legally mandated time?

Michael Vick did something that was against the law and was punished for it. PERIOD. He received a much lighter sentence than others in the same position. He provided and had a hand in a cave of hell for a living, breathing being who had no way to defend itself. Go BaraCk? Does that mean he would pardon Michael Vick because he, himself is 1/2 black. Enlighten me, obviously I missed that part of his campaign speech.

Funny how people are so "un-forgiving," as if they have never been guilty of anything. Vick was quite wrong in what he dealt in, but let's think about all the various violent acts by which this country was founded?! There are people walking free in our country that have countless stains of blood on their hands from actual people...not dogs.

No one wants to admit it, but I will put it out there...dogs ARE NOT the same as human beings. They do not belong in that same conversation. Their are dogs that are cared for better than people, and that is wrong!!

If you had to choose between your son Timmy living, or your dog Spot, I wonder who you will let live. Vick was very stupid for being involved in this, and it is justified with the punishment he received, maybe he should have received more of a punishment, but for the record, I thought America was built on a legal system of rehabilitation once you have been institutionalized?

Don't kill a dog, but it is ok to eat 3 double-cheeseburgers from Mc Donald's "Dollar Menu" each day...I guess the cows are different when it comes to animal cruelty. How about the "Alpo", filled with the remains of horses, etc? As people, if we are going to be honest, let's be completely honest. Yes, Vick will be hated for many years, but be careful America...when you judge, you will one day be judged too!!

**PS-if Mike Vick was your son and just committed such an act, ask yourself, would you have no remorse in your heart and feel the same way about him? How would you handle it if your family was disrespected and recevied hate mail from hundreds of thousands of people, if your son made a mistake? Or will you lie to yourself and say "he is getting what he deserved?" It is easy to point fingers when it is not a member of your own family (and no, I am not kin to Mike Vick). Maybe Think about it**

Try to be modest on your judgements. Cruelty is all relative. What do the vegetarians could think of the non-vegetarians?

Hmmmm Mr Horne. Okay, what's appropriate here. I was incarcerated for 4 months for assault, roughly close to the time Mike has served. What punishment would have fit for dogfighting?

I seriously the NFL does the right thing and enforces a ban for life on Vick. Not only is what he did totally disgusting, but illegal.

The NFL has rules against gambling and he broke those. He also broke the code of conduct fro NFL players so there should be no question about him ever being allowed to playing again.

Vick did the crime and he did the time. He has apologized. I say he gets his life back. I'm sure he'll never do a cruel thing to another animal. But realistically to these animal right activist. We slaughter and eat animals everyday. {Some one please tell them that animals eat animals.) Maybe with every touchdown pass Michael Vick throws in the NFL (if ever allowed back in) he donates $5000 to an animal shelter for the cute cuddly ones we don't eat.

I think Zarro was totally off topic.
Vic was treated to a celebrity's day in court again,.....twice now,......
He should be banned from playing professional football ever again.
Yes, people do make mistakes,....But he was barbaric at the least, time and time again.
He has no true remorse either, he just knows how to make all of the correct "Oh I'm So Sorry" sounds and stupid people believe him.
I will never forgive him or forget him and if they put him on a team, I'm not gonna watch ever again. I'll go walk a dog instead.

The U.S. Racist judicial system cares more about dogs than they do the welfare of African-American Men...... there are countries where people eat dogs. The laws promote modern day slavery and a nation of poor corporate sharecropers. Build the people not the dogs....Go Barak!!!!

HE is SOOOOOOOOOO GHETTO. He should stay in jail and get his ass kicked!

Posted by: rules | November 25, 2008 11:55 AM

I agree with frank, he deserves nothing less than being attacked by dogs. he should never play in the NFL again. As for Zarro's comment; every person in the military knew what they signed up for when they joined. No one is criminally responsible for sending them to do there jobs.

I hope he dies. Honestly, all you Vick supporters SUCK! What he did is SICK and twisted. He used his so-called fame to be a jerk and stupid and stupid people get what they pay for! hahaha LOVE IT ALL!
I wish I could put money on seeing him fight and get his @ss doused in gasoline and lit on fire! Man, I would give it all up to see that!
HE COMMITTED A HORRID CRIME and now he is paying.. SERVES HIM RIGHT.. come on people!

"He remains under contract to the Atlanta Falcons but the franchise's owner, Arthur Blank, has said the team will not have him back."

Good for Arthur Blank. He should go further and refuse to release him from his contract. That way he'll have no way to reap millions of dollars performing tricks in spandex for gullible spectators.

ha ha ha Surry County Circuit Court ...
ever been there?
lol
what a backwards county

Somehow I feel that Vick is getting less time than I would due to his celebrety status. 'taint rahght.

Yes. The cruelty to the animals was extremely distastful and mean; but what is been done to this young man is equally unworthy of us as humans. This sentence and the holier than thou animal rights advocates have destroyed this man's life to advance their cause without a care as to what they are doing to him. Five (5) months imprisonment plus five years probation would have been more than enough punishment for this crime.

Posted by: James Horne | November 25, 2008 11:50 AM

Vick is a human being... human beings make mistakes... he's paid for his mistakes... he's going to pay much more as a "celebrity" since there will be a lot of people who will never forgive him... and each time he shows up in a public space, he'll be under that cloud for the rest of his life... but we all deserve a second chance... even Vick.

In Germany we have a saying for people like Vick: "Der Abschaum der Menschheit"

Posted by: Gold Junge | November 25, 2008 11:46 AM

Zarro, the US Marines, and the military in general do not ask for you to be our spokesperson!!! We all volunteered to serve our country and do so daily with pleasure and pride in carrying out every mission asked of us. We were not drafted into service, and do not need you to save us from ourselves. I can completely understand that terms such as patriotism, freedom, sacrifice, and justice, are not understood by you or your left wing, liberal, cowardly, counterparts. It's easy for you to criticize daily under the blanket of freedom that you take for granted. I pity a nation which is run by pacifists, as they will soon be taken over by a nation which does not allow pacifism.

Is Vick truly sorry for the crimes he committed, or rather sorry he was caught, lost his endorsements, and NFL contract... Someone who is not remorseful for the right reasons does not deserve penance.

Posted by: Alex | November 25, 2008 11:43 AM

What term would a non-celebrity get for the same offense?

Is it possible to find statistics from that court, that judge?

Posted by: old_guy | November 25, 2008 11:41 AM

Two comments:
1. The day he plays professional football again is the day I never again watch the NFL.
2. The best day will be when he is thrown naked into a dog ring with ten deadly dogs.

Posted by: Frank Stein | November 25, 2008 11:39 AM

Yea what Micheal Vick did was wrong but come on, he is only human. People consume millions of animals each day with no remorse. Animals are hunted and their heads are placed as trophies on mantles. THe human race has always been cruel to animals.

Posted by: yung smoke | November 25, 2008 11:36 AM

The judge did the right thing. I'm sure Vick is very remorseful for the things he did. The court has shown him that he still has a chance to redeem himself in society. My concern is what kinda justice those in power has to face for the crimes they have put our fighting sons and daughters through.
