Brees Named Offensive Player of Year

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was named the NFL's offensive player of the year today by the Associated Press after having the second 5,000-yard passing season in league history.

Brees threw for 5,069 yards, only 15 yards fewer than Dan Marino's single-season NFL record of 5,084 passing yards set for the Miami Dolphins in 1984.

But those exploits didn't help the Saints reach the playoffs. They finished the season with a record of 8-8 and were in last place in the NFC South.

Brees received 22 of 50 votes in balloting of media members.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Minnesota Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson finished tied for second with nine votes apiece.

Manning was named the league's most valuable player by the AP last week.

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers got six votes. Carolina Panthers tailback DeAngelo Williams received two votes, and Atlanta Falcons tailback Michael Turner and Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith got one each.

I guess they are saying that Peyton is more valuable to the Colts than any other player is to their team. Certainly an arguable case, and this is like a runner up prize because Brees generated so much yardage.

How is Manning the MVP if he's not even the best offensive player? Not even the best QB? Unless Manning plays defense too! ZOMG!

Manning plays BOTH ways!
