Mangini Hiring Official
The Eric Mangini hiring is official in Cleveland. The Browns announced today that they'd hired Mangini as their coach and he was formally introduced at a news conference.
Mangini returns to the franchise with which he arrived in the league as a ball boy in 1994, then ascended to public relations intern and entry-level coach.
"I have a very distinct vision of what I want to build--having talented players with character, players selflessly driving toward the same goal," Mangini said at his introductory news conference at the Browns' headquarters in Berea, Ohio. "I'm going to be vigilant about that."
He was out of work only a week and a half after being fired by the New York Jets on the heels of a 9-7 season.
"Well, it was a long week," Mangini said at his news conference, "and I'm glad it's over."
Mangini did not confirm reports that he has hired Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan as his defensive coordinator and will hire New York Jets quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll as his offensive coordinator. Mangini said he'd like to have both on his staff in those roles but nothing is officially done yet.
He said he'd spoken to recently fired Browns coach Romeo Crennel and would like Crennel to remain with the team in some capacity. Mangini formerly worked for Crennel in New England, serving as the Patriots' secondary coach when Crennel was its defensive coordinator.
The Browns appear likely to hire George Kokinis, the director of pro personnel for the Baltimore Ravens, as their general manager to work with Mangini.
