Irsay Still Trying to Keep Harrison With Colts
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told the Indianapolis Star that wide receiver Marvin Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, was "premature" in announcing Monday that the team would release Harrison.
Irsay said he's scheduled to speak to Harrison today and there "definitely" remains a chance that Harrison could remain with the club.
"Marvin and I are talking at mid-afternoon and we'll see where we go from there," Irsay told the newspaper. "I'm not going to start talking like he's not here, because nothing's been determined officially by any stretch."
Condon told the Associated Press earlier Monday that the Colts and Harrison had been unable to agree to a reworked contract and the club had agreed to release Harrison.
Harrison is to have a salary of $9 million next season and is to count $13.4 million against the team's salary cap. He reportedly is unwilling to accept a pay cut and requested to be released.
But Irsay told the Star that the failed negotiations between Condon and team president Bill Polian weren't necessarily the final step.
"This is a very, very unusual situation," Irsay told the paper. "... Marvin goes back with me to 1996 when I started to assume ownership. Obviously there have been conversations between Bill and Condon, but Marvin and I are going to talk it through and see where it goes.
"It's a special circumstance. It's a player and an owner, two partners who have been together for a long, long time. We're going to talk through everything and be certain that the direction we go is the right one for both of us."
Releasing Harrison would clear $6 million in salary cap space for the Colts.
Harrison turns 37 in August. He has battled injuries over the past two seasons while totaling 80 catches.
In 13 seasons with the Colts, he has 1,102 catches.
