More From T.O.
In addition to proclaiming that he'll have to create a new following for himself now that he's with "North America's team," Terrell Owens said during his introductory news conference with the Buffalo Bills on Saturday evening that the accounts of him being disruptive this past season while with the Dallas Cowboys were inaccurate.
"That's all hearsay," Owens said. "If you look at all the comments that have come from my teammates with the Cowboys my last three years, it's all been positive. Prior to that, I don't really want to get into it. I'll let my teammates speak highly, and I think they have done that. They've spoken, and it speaks loudly as to what transpired."
Owens said he'd had "a lot of support" from his Cowboys teammates.
"I'm gonna be the same person I was the last three years with the Cowboys," Owens said. "When I'm on the football field, I'm a passionate guy. I like to win. I demand a lot from myself and the guys around me. So ask some of those guys around the league and those guys that I was in the locker room with three years, they'll know what whatever has been said up there is not accurate."
Owens signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Bills on Saturday, only two days after being released by the Cowboys. He said he thinks he can be a difference-maker for a team that started fast but finished slow this past season and ended up in last place in the AFC East with a record of 7-9.
"I saw how the Bills started this season out last year," Owens said. "Definitely they made some eyes open last year. If I can be that extra added piece to the puzzle to get them to the playoffs and make something happen, then that's what I'm here for. At this point in time, if you look around the league, you can't really sit and say, 'Okay, this team is gonna get to the Super Bowl.' When I was with Dallas, we were picked to be in the Super Bowl. We didn't make the playoffs. Nobody would've thought the Arizona Cardinals would be in the playoffs.
"At this point in time in my career, it doesn't really matter about the team that you think is going to make it to the playoffs and go to the Super Bowl. It's all about Xs and Os. It's all about going out and making plays. I looked at the defensive side of the ball. I looked at the offensive side of the ball. These guys have all those pieces. And if I add to that, then we'll get to where we need to be."
The Bills were ranked 25th in the league in total offense this past season. Quarterback Trent Edwards was the league's 17th-rated passer. But Owens said he believes that Edwards has great potential as a quarterback, and he vowed that he and Lee Evans will complement one another as receivers.
"I'm looking forward to getting with Trent, Lee and the guys, putting some points on the board," Owens said. "... As a player, you kind of watch games. You watch highlights. And I think Buffalo gave themselves a buzz. They were hot at the beginning of the season. They didn't finish well. But with someone like myself, I can come in. I can add that extra piece and get over the hump. With Trent, I saw a tremendous upside. I saw he's an accurate passer.
"... I feel like my play kind of speaks for itself. The opportunity presents itself--I make those plays. We make those things happen. As I know and everyone knows, Lee's been doing that since he's been here. I think we'll complement each other very well."
Owens said he received interest from other teams after being informed during a meeting Wednesday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that the Cowboys were releasing him. That meeting included Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his son Stephen, an executive with the team, and Owens's agents, Drew and Jason Rosenhaus.
"I've just kind of been at home just kind of relaxing," Owens said. "Once [Drew Rosenhaus] and I met with Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones and we parted ways, the next day [Rosenhaus] got busy. Once he told me that these guys were interested, I was just looking for a home.... There was interest [by other teams]. To get into it doesn't make any sense right now. I'm here with the Buffalo Bills right now."
Owens turns 36 before next season ends. He didn't say how much longer he plans to keep playing.
"Right now, I'm just focusing on the 2009 season," Owens said. "That's about it. I feel like I can still play. I can still run. As long as I'm healthy, I'll continue to play. People ask me the last couple of years and I've always told them: As long as God keeps me healthy and I'm able to be productive, then I'll play."
