Search Efforts Continue
According to broadcast and print reports in the Tampa area, the Coast Guard is continuing search efforts for the four men who were on a boat that's missing off the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Two NFL players, defensive end Corey Smith of the Detroit Lions and linebacker Marquis Cooper of the Oakland Raiders, are among the missing boaters.
The other two men have been identified in reports as former University of South Florida football players Nick Schuyler and Will Bleakley.
A Coast Guard spokesperson told the St. Petersburg Times this morning that the Coast Guard had searched more than 16,000 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico without finding the men or their boat.
The search is to continue throughout the day, according to the Times.
The four men reportedly left the Clearwater, Fla., area Saturday morning for a fishing trip on a 21-foot boat owned by Cooper (an initial report indicated erroneously that Smith owned the boat). Smith and Cooper are former Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammates and reportedly had been on fishing trips together previously.
Search efforts reportedly began around 2 a.m. Sunday, about a half-hour after the men were reported missing. The efforts have been hindered by high winds and choppy water conditions, according to reports.
