'Not... If, But When' Vick Will Be Signed

UPDATED (11:24 a.m.)...

Michael Vick's agent, Joel Segal, said during a radio interview Tuesday there's no longer any doubt that the recently reinstated quarterback will be signed by an NFL team.

"I'm very optimistic," Segal said on Washington's ESPN 980 during a visit to the Redskins' training camp. "It's not a matter of if, but when. And Mike's excited with the opportunity that the commissioner has given him. He's ready to go help a club win."

Segal declined to identify any of the teams interested in Vick.

"There are a lot of teams interested," Segal said, according to an account of the interview on the Redskins' Web site. "Mike's excited and looking forward to working and getting back. He's working hard every day."

Segal watched the Redskins' practice Tuesday with Vinny Cerrato, the team's executive vice president of football operations. But Segal said the visit was related to his Redskins clients, including quarterback Jason Campbell, not Vick.

"I'm not here for Mike," Segal said during the radio interview, done with a station owned by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. "I'm here for these guys."

Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, in a separate radio interview Tuesday with ESPN, said he thinks Vick is about to sign with a team.

"I think something is gonna happen this week," said Dungy, who's serving as an adviser to Vick.

Dungy's comments Tuesday echoed those that he made on NBC's broadcast Sunday night of the Hall of Fame Game. Dungy now works as an NFL analyst for NBC.

Dungy did not identify any of the clubs pursuing Vick, either.

A person familiar with the deliberations said Monday that at least five teams are interested in Vick.

"I don't know where he's gonna end up," said the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the talks are at a sensitive stage. "I can't tell you which teams, but I know there's at least five."

The source also said all indications are that Vick is in very good shape after training recently with speed coach Tom Shaw.

Vick was conditionally reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell just more than two weeks ago, enabling him to sign with a team and participate in his club's final two preseason games if he's signed. Goodell is to rule by Week 6 of the season on Vick's eligibility to participate in regular season games.

Vick missed the last two NFL seasons while serving his federal sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation in Virginia.

He is a free agent after being released by the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason.

Vick reportedly is to participate in a nationally televised interview Sunday on "60 Minutes" on CBS.

Michael Vick is a LOW LIFE THUG!!!!!!!!!!!
He should never be allowed to play football for NFL ever again.
In fact, he should die the same way he KILLED, TORTURED those INNOCENT AND VOICELESS DOGS.
To let him play football again is to tell the society : it is o.k. to do anything against the law, it is o.k. to kill, tortured innocent creatures, as long as u can play ball.
This thug make me sick to my stomach everytime i saw his name, his ugly face anywhere.
If his face show up on my TV again, it is going to dirty my TV, MY HOME.
THUG, THUG, THUG!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course Vick's agent thinks he'll be signed - it's his job!

Posted by: bigshot2 | August 12, 2009 3:54 PM

The facts are clear: Mr. Vick participated in a six-year pattern of illegal activity. His plea clearly stated that along with these activities, he savagely electrocuted and beat dogs to death after they lost their brutal fights. This is barbarism. This was a multi-year pattern of behavior that demonstrates a startling lack of moral character and judgment. According to a Forbes magazine poll Vick tops the list of most hated athletes. More than seven in 10 people across the U.S. say they dislike him.

Here is a petition you should check out against Michael Vick benefiting from abusing dogs:

I hope Vick goes to the Patriots...so that I have yet another reason to root against them.

Posted by: wolfcastle | August 12, 2009 9:48 AM

Vick is a monster. I will never watch or attend a game in which he is a player.

Posted by: sahib0 | August 12, 2009 8:35 AM

Hey NFL - go ahead and sign up Vick. Thousands of animal activists are going to protest every game for hiring a dog killer. NFL HIRES PET KILLERS!!! YOU BETCHA!!!

Posted by: c_etude | August 12, 2009 8:10 AM

Vick is forevermore the dog fighter and no amount of legal obligation to society can erase that stain so copious with blood and agony of multitudes of helpless dogs (and animals due to bait training) on his hands. Dogs that had no choice. People do have choices. How tragic-a dog fighter for America's role model; and people wonder why America is so full of violence. These "lectures" Vicks is doing-I feel it's just a con job to get his old millions of dollars a year job with NFL. Do a little song and dance and play ball. Keep in mind Michael Vick LIED to law enforcement and to the public initially when he was charged with dog fighting. "I am innocent and I will clear my good name" I distinctly remember him saying. Only after his buddies turned him in he changed his tune--so I feel Vick is a pathological liar. He's been torturing and killing dogs for YEARS, including throwing in family pets into dog fighting rings because he thought it was funny, per the USDA report on Vick. Yep-Vick thinks watching animals get their limbs ripped out of their sockets, eviscerated, flayed alive, screaming in agony-that is Vick's idea of funny. Vick was already a multi-millionaire when he did dog fighting-it wasn't for the money - it was for the PLEASURE, which represents Vick's true heart-that of a SADIST. If Vick wants to "lecture" about animal safety he needs to stay out of the NFL and NOT let a dog fighter become America's role model.

Vick isn't going anywhere.

Exhibition season starts in 24 hours and he hasn't even started to learn a playbook yet.

No team is going to waste money on him this season, because we all know Vick, Dungy and his agent think he's a god and he's not going to accept something totally reasonable like the salary a true 3rd QB would make (NFL scrub money) out of protection for his fragile ego.

Vick is practice squad material at best in 2009. 2010 is a different story.

Posted by: BostonDan | August 12, 2009 7:39 AM

Vick hanged, electrocuted, and drowned dogs for the crime of not being very good fighters. Or not wanting to fight at all.

He was involved in this for many years. It was no "mistake".

I don't want this guy living in my town. Much less on my football team.

Posted by: corco02az | August 12, 2009 6:56 AM

What's truly amazing to me is that there are many instances of hard crimes in professional sports, but that THIS is the one that people find unacceptible.

Bull fights in Spain or Mexico - acceptible. Kobe Bryant raping a maid - acceptible. Ray Lewis involvement in murder - can be overlooked. Dogfighting - get us the hanging judge.

Those who say they'll boycott the NFL if Vick plays - get a clue already. Much worse criminals than Vick play professional sports every day. If this is your conscience speaking, then you should have never been watching U.S. sports in the first place.

Vick did his time. Give him a break already.

A DUI accident? Really BUTCH2964? when you get behind a wheel of a car and drive drunk and kill someone by crashing into their car or hitting them while they are walking common thats murder. the man has more than enough money to get a cab or a driver dumb@ss. I said what vick did wasnt right but at least he went behind bars and did what he had to do. im not gonna waste my time on you i can sit here all night and make examples but you know what for what? its not worth it vick served time. goodell and dungy know whats at stake so if you have a problem with what they did i suggest you stop watching sports period bc take a look around bro every sport is full of criminals and guess what they are still playing. they get rooted for whn they hit homers for their team or score touchdowns or score goals, adn ect. get it. no matter what kids watch or who they look up to they will make their own choices when they get older just like Vick A-rod and so on. They were told what they could'nt do but they did anyway right? yes. ok. so if vick plays or not i have to deal with it, your gonna have to deal with it just like everyone is going to have to bc we are not the commish. And the choice was made for vick to be re-instated. And for you to judge dungy wow just shut your mouth and open your eyes man. Take a look around its not only athletes that our kids look up to. Im just sick of hearing this BS leave it alone and move on people. “Your mistake does not define who you are...you are your possibilities”

LOL some people still live by the code of Hammurabi apparently, an eye for an eye and all that. The vitriol and hyperbole is amusing. It's not like this is a town hall meeting on health care reform...

go vick, there is too many haters out there (peta)

Michael Vick is a sick individual and I am just shocked beyond shock that people like Tony Dungy and Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States are promoting him! This is a deminted person, a person who for YEARS AND YEARS tortured and killed innocent animals who LOVED him. How sick does one have to be to do that? VERY sick. And then I read that on his first public appearance, he said that his crimes were caused by OTHER people's influence over him. And these are the words of a repentent person? No they are the words of a pathological liar. He hasn't changed one bit. He is sick and self absorbed. Plus, the man can't even speak English.

BWATKINS301 & INNDEPENDENT32 I am with you! There are alot of ignorant people on here that are blasting and judging Vick as if they are GOD! ALot of them are probably fake over the top animal lovers that kiss their pets on the mouth and let them lick all over their faces. Heck, I bet none of them even watched the sit down interview on ESPN with the guy who runs a multimillion dollar pitfull fighting ring across a few states in the US!!!! Yeah, they not making an example of him in a negative way. Why? Because he's not a successful young african american quarterback in the NFL. Had it been anyone else, the feds nor all these protesters would have been after them as hard. To be honest, he took the fall because of who he was and not because of the facts, because from what I've seen, heard and read, the case was mainly built on hearsay! I HOPE MIKE VICK THE BEST OF LUCK IN JOURNEY BACK TO THE NFL, BECAUSE ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE HIM

Posted by: KDF-JOBS | August 11, 2009 10:25 PM

As a Bronco fan all of my life, if he gets on the Broncos, I will boycott the team as long as he is on. The Broncos have more class than that I hope. Whatever team he lands on, I will boycott them as well.

The NFL is a business and businesses exist to make money. To hire a known felon is a bad move and will cost them money, fans and credibility. The question is, will they make more money than this move costs them? Thats exactly what the NFL's number crunchers are working on right now. Thats all the NFL cares about.

Posted by: Arianj | August 11, 2009 9:44 PM

I am simply at a lost to understand how so many of you who have posted negative comments on Michael Vick's possible return to the NFL, think this human being does not deserve a second chance. That's what being CHRISTIAN is all about and isn't America about giving second opportunities to those who have "paid their dues" according to the court's sentencing. Didn't Michael do that? HE DESERVES ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SUPPORT THE TEAM THAT PROVIDES IT.

Posted by: bwatkins301 | August 11, 2009 8:42 PM

Michael Vick deserves nothing less than to be torn apart, piece by piece, by a pack of rabid pitt bulls, PERIOD! You souless ignorant braindead people that don't get it and are on here comparing Dante Stallworth with what Vick did should suffer the same fate! Shame on you losers! FYI: Stallworth case was a D.U.I accident. He did not intentionally kill, Vick did it over and over and over again PERIOD!This pariah (Vick) has no heart or soul obviously. Former Colt's Q-back Art Schlitster was banned for life from the NFL for gambling. How is that worse than what this low life canicidal murdering thug (who lied when he had the chance to tell the truth) did to these helpless, defenseless beautiful doggies! I was the biggest Vick fan, but now I have a "No Vick" self made custom Falcons jersey featuring a BIG red circle with a line across his #7 and I intend to wear it proudly everywhere I go this season. I hope to see Vick get his someday. Until then I don't want to hear anything about this poor excuse for a human being, except the news that he's dead or that he's smoking crack under a bridge. Shame on you too Roger Goodell and you too Tony Dungy. (I used to actually like you Tony, I thought you were a deeply religious person with descent morals and convictions, boy was I mistaken). How dare you call yourself a responsible commissioner of the most popular and successful sports league in the world. Our kids look up to these self entitled retards we call athletes and role models. May KARMA find you and hunt you down and give each and everyone of you scumbags what you rightfully deserve...horrible pain and an equally horrible slow agonizing death, just like the pit bulls this cowardly monster MURDERED!!!! YES!, it's called... MURDER!!!

Posted by: butch2964 | August 11, 2009 7:07 PM

Would You jump infront of a moving Vehicle to save a dog? I know what vick did was wrong but ive moved on and so should everyone else.so go protest and do what you think is right but it wont change what the future holds. “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."

Posted by: inndependent32 | August 11, 2009 6:30 PM

GO VICK! I cant believe what im reading from these people up top. Vick Doesnt deserve a chance? oh how about STALLWORTH! do you think he deserves a chance? He is on house arrest for killing a HUMAN BEING! and he isnt serving time? give me a break. The man was drinking and driving. I never knew a DOG was above a Human. This man had a family. You people are a joke. Vick did his time and now its time to move on. A human cant be replaced especially when you have family, a wife and kids. WE CAN BUY DOGS NOT HUMANS. I love dogs but this makes me angry. DONT WATCH OR READ ABOUT VICK IF IT BUGS YOU THAT MUCH. I kept my mouth shut for too long now and heard enough. GO VICK! NOT STALLWORTH!

Posted by: inndependent32 | August 11, 2009 6:19 PM

Some things don't deserve forgiveness. Mike's violent heinous acts are definitely in that category. Go away and stay away, Mike. You are not wanted.

Maybe you can ask Jesus how to get to the unemployment office.

Posted by: Rubiconski | August 11, 2009 4:47 PM

Vick is a cruel low-life thug who should never be permitted to play in the NFL or
anywhere else. He committed atrocious acts
against helpless animals. If any team hires him I hope they lose every game and that
he gets both legs broken and a concussion.
That's what he did to the poor dogs.

Posted by: hightower10023 | August 11, 2009 4:04 PM

I'm the old school. I'm very sad of how they used dogs to attack the civil rights marcher, and nothing was done. They should have charged those officers who played part in this matter, because little black kids got bit by those dogs. Yes, Mike did a bad thing, but what's wrong with this situation, his legal teams could've done the right thing by telling the truth. Whenever theirs others involved, you know the Policeman, and the FBI will get some type of confession from them, so why not tell the truth, and save you lots of money and time.

I hear the team that might sign up Vick is the Bulldogs.......ruff ruff

Maryland will finish with a 2-10 record.

Maryland's defensive line and linebacker corps are a joke --- no pass rush whatsoever and give up a ton of long yardage plays.

I have seen harder hitting teams in powder puff leagues.

The only hard hits the Terps make - are out of bound plays - which cost them an additional 15 yards - which are quite frequent.

California's running back - Best - will gain 296 yards in the opening game

I love it, when Maryland constantly gets embarrassed on national TV.

Prediction:

California -- 56
Maryland -- 10

It's hilarious to see Maryland win a game - and the very next week get clobbered by a Virginia Tech - Boston College.

It is great to see Maryland go down to a crushing defeat on recruiting front (the kids they have received commitments from - are a joke! - taking the bottom of the barrel)

Carolina Blue - Carolina WHITE - Go Tar Heels - Let's go Tar Heels !

playing football is a game that we like to watch, its just a game we've played all our lives. get over it. Bush had over a 100,000 people killed, not dogs but people
and you probally thinks he's a hero. the only thing sick is your thinking. When Vick plays turn the T.V. off or change the station. But you my friend is not the Judge or Jury for the outcome of Vick's life

Posted by: F7MAC7 | August 11, 2009 3:12 PM

The purpose of the prison system is rehabilitation and redress for a wrong that has been committed. You don't have to forgive Michael Vick for what he did, but you can't punish him further. If a team wants to hire Vick then I wish him the best of luck in redeeming himself.

Posted by: ozpunk | August 11, 2009 3:11 PM

Going to jail is not redeeming yourself for your actions. Sorry, if he ends up playing for my team, they won't be my team anymore and so will I suspect thousands of others.

Posted by: precaryus1 | August 11, 2009 3:01 PM

There is more outrage about the pathetic Michael Vick killing animals then Donte' Stallworth killing a human while driving DUI. What's this world coming to? They are both pathetic examples of a human being and neither should EVER be allowed to play on the NFL again. I understand the argument about paying their debt (Although Sallworth's debt was ridiculous) but that is to society. This allows them to live among society again. Playing in the NFL is a privilege and anyone that commits a crime while playing in the NFL should never be allowed to play again. Do this to a few and watch the amount of criminal activity committed by the players drop. They do it now because there is no definitive deterrent against doing so.

Look at what MLB did to Pete Rose just for placing wagers on games.... Banned from baseball for life.

What a society we have become.

Posted by: JimBeam50 | August 11, 2009 2:43 PM

Mike, my heart breaks to think what these people did to you.Just as I am not an advocate for dog fighting,I do not advocate drug use either. How many players in the NFL have used and sold drugs And been caught? They did not have their lives destroyed like you did.I wish nothing but the best for you Mike Vick.Get your life back and I hope you make millions more.

Posted by: indpainter | August 11, 2009 2:19 PM

Michael Vick should be given a chance to make a living as a professional football player. He has served his time in prison and deserves the right to continue his profession. Dog fighting still and always will exist in this country. Before Vick's limited implication no one could give a hoot about dog fighting. Maybe the pet fanatics should investigate the animals (fish, birds, hamsters, etc.) being dumped at pet shops all over the country.

Posted by: lionelp | August 11, 2009 2:14 PM

Vick did not "make a mistake". He and his friends intentionally choked dogs to death, jumped up and down on their chests to crush their lungs, cut them with knives to injure them in order for THEIR dogs to kill them without getting injured, hung dogs by the neck to kill them, etc.
I will personally help start a natinal boycott of any sponsor that advertises during any game he ever plays in. There are a hell of a lot more dog lovers in this country than football fans, and a large majority of fans are ALSO dog lovers. WE dogs lovers will NEVER believe that Vick has paid anywhere close to the penalty he deserves for being a vicious creep. And I am a former fan of Vick. Now, think how NON-football fans feel about him?

Posted by: jmpotratz | August 11, 2009 2:13 PM

"When some of his associates would want to give some non-performing dogs away as pets, Michael Vick would not allow it. He demanded that the dogs who did not fight well enough had to die, no exceptions."

Hell no we won't let it go Michael Vick.

GO VICK GO..DONT LET NONE OF THESE HATERS STOP YOU WE ALL MAKE MISTAKE ..SO DO YOUR THING.I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU..
