Why Is Andre Smith Still Unsigned?
The unresolved rookie contract negotiation that doesn't make sense is that involving offensive tackle Andre Smith, the sixth overall selection in the NFL draft in April, and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Smith is one of five first-round picks league-wide still unsigned.
But in his case, his market value is set.
The player drafted immediately before him, quarterback Mark Sanchez, signed a contract with the New York Jets in June. Sanchez's five-year deal reportedly is worth as much as $60 million, including $28 million in guaranteed money.
The player drafted immediately after Smith, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders last month. His five-year deal reportedly is worth as much as $54 million, including $23.5 million in guaranteed money.
How tough is it at this point?
