Brooks to ESPN

Derrick Brooks, the 11-time Pro Bowl linebacker released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the offseason, apparently isn't returning to the league, at least not immediately.

ESPN announced Wednesday that Brooks has joined the network as an NFL analyst. He is to appear on the show "First Take" on ESPN2, the network announced.

Brooks drew recent interest from the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders but wasn't signed by either team. He also was mentioned as a possible addition for the Chicago Bears after they lost linebacker Brian Urlacher to a season-ending wrist injury suffered in last Sunday night's season opener, and for the New England Patriots after linebacker Jerod Mayo suffered a knee injury Monday night.

"While I still feel like I can play in the NFL, I'm excited to be a part of ESPN's NFL coverage where I have a lot of former teammates," Brooks said in a written statement released by the network. "I look forward to the exposure this opportunity will bring as a share my knowledge and perspective of the game on 'First Take.' "

Former NFL wide receiver Drew Bennett also joined the show as an analyst, ESPN announced.
