Freeman Is Bucs' No. 2 QB
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' trade of quarterback Luke McCown to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday cleared the way for rookie Josh Freeman, a first-round draft choice in April, to begin the season as the team's primary backup to starter Byron Leftwich.
"He will prepare as a number two" quarterback, Buccaneers Coach Raheem Morris said at a news conference Sunday, according to a transcript provided by the team. "He'll have a chance to learn as a number two. He'll get a chance to be in the meeting rooms as a number two.
"He has to say yes to his development and how he does it. He has to catch up. He has to get it a little bit faster than you normally would as a number two and get him as many reps as we could have before. Now it has to be fast-forward training. I have more confidence in my coaching staff and we know we can get that done."
The Buccaneers will make all their quarterback-related decisions knowing they must groom Freeman to be the organization's centerpiece for years to come, Morris said.
"When you talk about Freeman, you're talking about the quarterback position," Morris said. "We do have a thought process in Freeman. Everything we do has to. We are married to him. Everything we do around that position, around this team, around this organization, the Tampa Bay area, we clean the street on MacDill, it's going to be around Freeman. That's just what it has to be."
