Bears sign Cutler to extension

Quarterback Jay Cutler signed a two-year contract extension with the Chicago Bears, the team announced.

The deal runs through the 2013 season.

According to the league-owned NFL Network, the extension is worth about $30 million, including approximately $20 million in guaranteed money.

The Bears obtained Cutler in a trade with the Denver Broncos in April after Cutler had clashed with the Broncos and their first-year coach, Josh McDaniels, in particular.

Cutler has played relatively well for the Bears, throwing for 1,201 yards while the club has won three of its first five games of the season. But Cutler also has thrown seven interceptions and is only the league's 16th-rated passer.

The Broncos haven't exactly missed Cutler thus far.

They're off to a 6-0 start under McDaniels and new starting quarterback Kyle Orton, acquired from the Bears in the Cutler trade, is one of eight NFL quarterbacks with a passer rating above 100. He has thrown for 1,465 yards and nine touchdowns, with only one interception, and is the NFL's eighth-rated passer.

Cutler's contract previously was to run through the 2011 season.
