Johnson contests suspension by Chiefs

Tailback Larry Johnson filed a grievance against the Kansas City Chiefs contesting his suspension imposed by the team, according to the NFL's Web site.

Through the NFL Players Association, Johnson requested an expedited hearing and an arbitrator could rule on Johnson's appeal of the suspension next week, according to the league's Web site.

The Kansas City Star reported that in addition to appealing his suspension, Johnson is discussing a possible settlement with the Chiefs that could make a hearing unnecessary.

Agent Peter Schaffer, who represents Johnson, told the Star that he's going "full bore on both" and a settlement with the Chiefs would "not necessarily" involve a parting between Johnson and the team.

"The best-case scenario is we find a way to keep it positive," Schaffer told the newspaper. "There's a lot of things in play, and nothing has been decided."

The Chiefs suspended Johnson until Nov. 9 for conduct detrimental to the team. With the Chiefs on their bye week, Johnson is to miss one game during the suspension.

The suspension came after Johnson compared the coaching credentials of Todd Haley, the Chiefs' first-year head coach, to those of his father, Penn State defensive line coach Larry Johnson Sr., on Twitter. Johnson reportedly also used a slur referring to sexual orientation on Twitter and, according to the Star, used a similar slur when he told reporters Monday that he wouldn't speak to them until later in the week.
