NFL reportedly to protect umpires
According to a report by ESPN, the NFL's competition committee plans to take steps in the offseason to protect officials, particularly the umpire who is stationed behind the linebackers on plays.
The umpire could be moved to a different spot on the field or equipped with a helmet, according to the report.
The consideration of such a move has been prompted by collisions between players and umpires during games, ESPN reported.
