Niners name Smith starter at QB

Former top overall draft choice Alex Smith has supplanted Shaun Hill as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Coach Mike Singletary announced the switch Monday, a day after Smith threw three second-half touchdown passes in relief of Hill in a loss to the Houston Texans.

"Alex Smith will be the quarterback," Singletary said at a news conference Monday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "We're not going to be flavor of the month with this guy this week, that guy next week. I had to make a decision based on what I feel gives us the best chance to win."

Smith hadn't played in a regular season game since 2007.

"I feel Alex gives us the best chance to win," Singletary said, according to the Chronicle. "When I look at Alex, I really didn't know what we were going to get. I was hoping we'd get what we saw in practice, and that's what we got. We're going to go forward with that."
