Kokinis reportedly fired
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cleveland Browns apparently have fired General Manager George Kokinis.
Kokinis was escorted from the team's facility Monday by security personnel, the newspaper reported.
The move comes a day after Browns owner Randy Lerner said he wouldn't fire Eric Mangini as the team's coach this season but he does plan to appoint someone at some point to run the franchise's football operations.
"There's absolutely no question about that," Lerner said Sunday, according to the Plain Dealer. "The highest priority that I have is a strong, credible, serious leader within the building to guide decisions in a far more conspicuous, open, transparent way.
"I can maybe defend decisions by saying I've sought advice and I've brought people in, and we've gone to see people--and I think my highest priority is to have a stable figure that represents the voice that explains the decisions."
The Browns' record dropped to 1-7 with Sunday's 30-6 loss to the Chicago Bears. The team's play has led fans to organize a protest movement, and Lerner reportedly is scheduled to meet Tuesday with two season-ticket holders who are urging fellow fans to stay out of their seats for the opening kickoff of a Nov. 16 home game against the Baltimore Ravens.
According to the Plain Dealer, Lerner said Sunday when asked what fans could expect: "I don't know that I have a great answer for what to hang your hat on right now, other than a massive amount of thought and analysis and reflection and personal honesty is going to go into thinking about what's going on.
"The answer is soul-searching."
