Women's group calls for Cable suspension
The National Organization for Women has called for the suspension of Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable over allegations by his former wife and ex-girlfriend that he hit them in the past.
"Tom Cable's history of violence against women raises a question: Why is he still the head coach of an NFL team?" the organization's president, Terry O'Neill, said to USA Today in a written statement via e-mail. "Mr. Cable admits having battered his first wife, and he stands accused of battering two other intimate partners as well. As a survivor of domestic violence, I know that women do not make such accusations lightly. Indeed, women have much more to lose than to gain by coming forward to tell their stories.
"The Oakland Raiders, properly, say they are undergoing a 'serious evaluation' of these recent allegations. At the very least he should be suspended during this process.... A man who has admitted battering his wife has no business being a role model for all of us who would like to be able to look up to the head coach of an NFL football team."
Cable told reporters Wednesday that he spoke to Raiders owner Al Davis in recent days about the allegations. Cable indicated that his job status was not discussed in his conversation with Davis, the Associated Press reported. Cable also indicated that he planned to coach the Raiders the remainder of the season, according to the AP.
The Raiders announced Monday that they and the NFL would undertake a "serious evaluation" of the allegations against Cable.
The women's allegations were made in interviews with ESPN that aired Sunday.
Cable has denied most of the accusations in a written statement but has acknowledged once striking his former wife with an open hand. According to the AP, he stood by that statement Wednesday and declined to answer questions on the subject.
According to ESPN's report Sunday, another former wife accused Cable in divorce documents of being physically and verbally abusive of her in the past but said in a statement Saturday through her attorney that Cable "has never been violent to me or our children."
