Roethlisberger suspended for six games

UPDATED (3:27 p.m.)...

The NFL suspended Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the first six games of next season for violating the league's personal conduct policy, the league announced Wednesday.

The suspension potentially could be reduced to four games by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell if Roethlisberger meets certain conditions tied to his potential reinstatement, according to the league's announcement.

Goodell also could extend Roethlisberger's suspension if he chooses for any failure by Roethlisberger to comply with the conditions of his reinstatement, the league announced. Roethlisberger was ordered to undergo a medical evaluation. Goodell punished Roethlisberger for off-field misbehavior and conduct detrimental to the NFL even though the quarterback was not charged with a crime.

"I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you," Goodell wrote in a letter to Roethlisberger, according to the NFL's announcement. "My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans."

There was no immediate reaction from Roethlisberger, his representatives or the NFL Players Association. A source familiar with the deliberations said earlier this week that Roethlisberger would not challenge any disciplinary action against him unless he and his advisers considered it "too harsh."

Art Rooney II, the president of the Steelers, said that the team supported Goodell's ruling.

"I agree and support the decision the commissioner made today in the discipline for Ben Roethlisberger," Rooney said in a conference call with reporters. "... I support the level of discipline and the plan for professional evaluation and potential followup."

The announcement came as ESPN reported that the Steelers had begun contacting teams about a possible trade involving Roethlisberger, seeking a top-10 pick in the NFL draft Thursday night in return. At least one team was considering such a deal, according to ESPN's report.

A district attorney in Georgia announced last week that Roethlisberger would not be charged with a crime based on an allegation by a woman that she was sexually assaulted by Roethlisberger last month at a nightclub.

A 20-year-old college student accused Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her in a bathroom at a Milledgeville, Ga., nightclub. Frederic D. Bright, the district attorney involved in the case, said when he announced his decision that he could not prove Roethlisberger's guilt to jurors beyond a reasonable doubt. Roethlisberger said that evening that the correct decision had been made by the prosecutor.

Roethlisberger, a two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Steelers, also was accused in a civil lawsuit by a woman in Nevada of sexually assaulting her in a Lake Tahoe hotel room in 2008. Roethlisberger denied that allegation and he was not charged with a crime.

The NFL's personal conduct policy empowers Goodell to impose discipline upon a player as he sees fit for conduct detrimental to the league even if the player is not convicted of a crime.

"The Personal Conduct Policy makes clear that I may impose discipline 'even where the conduct does not result in conviction of a crime' as, for example, where the conduct 'imposes inherent danger to the safety and well being of another person,' " Goodell wrote to Roethlisberger, according to the league's announcement. "As the District Attorney concluded, the extensive investigatory record shows that you contributed to the irresponsible consumption of alcohol by purchasing (or facilitating the purchase of) alcoholic beverages for underage college students, at least some of whom were likely already intoxicated. There is no question that the excessive consumption of alcohol that evening put the students and yourself at risk. The Personal Conduct Policy also states that discipline is appropriate for conduct that 'undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.' By any measure, your conduct satisfies that standard."

According to the league's announcement, Goodell also wrote to Roethlisberger that "your conduct raises sufficient concerns that I believe effective intervention now is the best step for your personal and professional welfare."

The NFL announced that Roethlisberger must undergo "a comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals" and must adhere to any counseling or treatment that is recommended.

Roethlisberger's progress is to be reviewed prior to the beginning of the regular season, according to the league's announcement. Goodell could reduce Roethlisberger's suspension to four games after that review, the NFL announced, or could extend the suspension for any "failure to cooperate and follow the plan."

Goodell also wrote to Roethlisberger, according to the league: "I believe it is essential that you take full advantage of the resources available to you. My ultimate disposition in this matter will be influenced by the extent to which you do so, what you learn as a result, and a demonstrated commitment to making positive change in your life.... In your six years in the NFL, you have first thrilled and now disappointed a great many people. I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity to get your life and career back on track."

Under the personal conduct policy, any appeal by a player of disciplinary action taken by the league would be heard by Goodell or a person appointed by him.

Roethlisberger is barred from participating in further offseason activities with the Steelers, the league announced, until he completes his medical evaluation and is cleared by doctors. Roethlisberger had resumed participating in the Steelers' offseason workouts. If he receives such clearance, Roethlisberger would be permitted to participate in training camp and the Steelers' preseason games, according to the league's announcement.

The NFL announced that Goodell's decision was based on the findings of the criminal investigation in Georgia, Bright's public comments, Goodell's meeting with Roethlisberger and "comments and recommendations" of Roethlisberger's representatives. Goodell consulted with the union and current and former NFL players, according to the league. The league also cited "a private conversation" with Bright and "information learned by the NFL office in the course of examining the Milledgeville matter."

The Steelers also conducted their own investigation, Rooney said.

Goodell and Rooney spoke to Roethlisberger by telephone Wednesday, according to the NFL and Rooney.

The Steelers open their season on Sept. 12. If he's suspended for six games, Roethlisberger would be eligible to play in an Oct. 31 game at New Orleans. He would miss games against the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. If the suspension is reduced to four games, Roethlisberger would be eligible to return against the Browns in an Oct. 17 game in Pittsburgh. That game follows the Steelers' bye week.

Roethlisberger met with Goodell for approximately two hours last week in New York, on the day after the prosecutor's announcement in the Georgia case.

Rooney said at a news conference last Thursday that the team was prepared to discipline Roethlisberger but would coordinate disciplinary action with the league. The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players' union gives a club the ability to suspend a player for as many as four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the team. Rooney said Wednesday that the Steelers had input into the decision but "there's no question it's the commissioner's decision on a case like this."

Rooney also said "it's my understanding the Players Association does not plan to appeal it." He said of the approach that he expects Roethlisberger to take: "His intention here is to follow the program the commissioner sets out. It's our hope and our intention that's what he's going to do."

There have been multiple reports that the Steelers might consider trading Roethlisberger. Rooney said last week that the team planned to give Roethlisberger another chance to prove himself. He said the Steelers had not discussed a trade of Roethlisberger with any other teams at that point.

According to multiple reports Wednesday, the St. Louis Rams, who have the top overall selection in the draft Thursday night, informed the Steelers in recent days that they're not interested in trading for Roethlisberger.

Rooney declined to comment Wednesday on the latest trade speculation. He said the Steelers go into every draft prepared to do whatever is necessary to improve the team, and don't comment publicly on trade conversations.

"We just have to stick with that and really not discuss trades in advance," Rooney said.

The Steelers previously traded wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round draft choice. The former Super Bowl most valuable player was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of next season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Roethlisberger's suspension will be without pay. Under league policy, the Steelers will be forced to pay money to the NFL office based on a portion of the salary amounts lost by Roethlisberger and Holmes during their suspensions--essentially a fine of the team for having multiple players suspended.

The Steelers obtained Roethlisberger's former backup, Byron Leftwich, in a trade Tuesday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They also have veteran quarterback Charlie Batch and young quarterback Dennis Dixon, who made a start last season when Roethlisberger was hurt.

Rooney said last week that he "made it clear to Ben that his conduct in this incident did not live up to our standards. We made it very clear to Ben that there will be consequences for his actions. And Ben has indicated to us that he's willing to accept those consequences."

Goodell sent a recent memo to NFL teams reminding them that the league's personal conduct policy requires players and other employees to do more than merely avoid committing a crime.

Further details of the case in Georgia emerged last week from hundreds of pages of documents from the investigation released by authorities. The woman, according to the Associated Press, told police that after Roethlisberger had told her and her friends to consume shots of alcohol, she was led into a hallway by one of Roethlisberger's bodyguards and put on a stool. The bodyguard left and Roethlisberger walked down the hallway and exposed himself, according to the woman's account, the AP reported.

The woman told Roethlisberger no and entered a bathroom but Roethlisberger followed her and closed the door, the woman told investigators.

"I still said no, this is not okay, and he then had sex with me," the woman said in one of her statements to investigators, according to the AP. "He said it was okay. He then left without saying anything."

Roethlisberger did not answer questions from reporters when he made a public statement last week following the prosecutor's announcement in Georgia.

Roethlisberger said that evening at the Steelers' training facility: "I'd like to begin by expressing gratitude for the thorough investigation process in Georgia and the prosecutor's decision not to bring charges. I know without a doubt it was the right conclusion. I don't intend to discuss any details related to the events in Georgia and I'm happy to put this behind me and move forward. I am truly sorry for the disappointment and negative attention I have brought to my family, my teammates, coaches, the Rooneys and the NFL.

"I understand that the opportunities I have been blessed with are a privilege and that much is expected of me as the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I absolutely want to be the leader this team deserves, valued in the community and a role model to kids. I have much work to do to earn this trust and I am committed to improving and showing everyone my true values. I am excited to get back to work with my teammates and I'm more determined than ever to have a great season. I intend to make my family, friends and the Steeler nation proud on all fronts. Thank you and God bless."

"To those who think Ben wasn't suspended longer because he is white, I think Tiger Woods brought a whole lot more disgrace to golf than Ben did to the NFL. Why wasn't he suspended, because he is black?"

Helloooo ... Rape is a crime, infidelity is not.

Is it me or is this simply a case of one person's word against another? That said, I think Goddell is making a rush to judgement on Ben Roethlisberger. I think this personal conduct policy of the NFL is somewhat arbitrary and unfair.

Ben Just really needs to stop drinking.

Gee. Redskins could have got Ben instead of Don. It seems to me Redskins are getting dumber every season. It is fast becoming father-and-son team once again.

Just because they can't prove it in a court of law doesn't mean it did not happen. But he has not denied the rest of the story either, and that in and of itself is despicable behavior.

But my harshest words are for the corporation that headquarters in the town I live in. NIKE. What in the heck is wrong with them? They continue to support this thug even after two events like this?? The same with Tiger Woods. Oh I see, it is not ok to abuse animals, just women, right?

I am going to make sure every woman I know knows how NIKE thinks and I am never buying another NIKE product ever again.

First, this isn't rape. An allegation isn't a conviction; DA found no usable evidence with which to prosecute. No crime was committed.
Second, a 20-year-old is an adult woman, student or not. Another customer is not responsible if she accepts a drink at a bar.
Third, the adult accuser has withdrawn the charge so her identity should be released just as Rothlisberger's has been.

Yeah, if Ben were black though, Al Sharpton would already be protesting all of the sponsors of the NFL and crying like a little byeeatch like he always does.

Posted by: crazydude | April 22, 2010 9:01 AM

Looks like Tiger will have company. So Ben is maybe fined $3 million but still makes over $100 million and he gets traded for more money. So where is the punishment? Mickie Vick is the now the QB for Philly. So perhaps the deal is to be a felon and make serious money. But then date rape is still rape unless you have the money to say it isn't.

All you pro-rape people make me sick.

Posted by: JoshHamilton | April 22, 2010 8:37 AM

Sorry Ben. But if you were a convicted fellon, maybe the NFL could have gotten you into their "work-release" program and the League's Goodell could have just said: "No harm, no foul. Because I've nailed a few bar flies myself..."

Posted by: connerabr | April 22, 2010 8:21 AM

Seems the family and the girl decides not to press charges to avoid the media circus that would take place if they did. Which does not make Ben innocent or guilty except by our own opinion.

Lets face it two women in two separate parts of the country. Seem Ben has a problem here and I hate to think that if he is really guilty that he should be sitting in jail and not free. This works two ways.

You can have people take advantage of these guy and then you also can have these guys take advantage of people.

I do hope this was a fact based decision and not a public relations ploy. But I have never seen any facts tht would warrant this measure. Just lots of hype.

I do admit that I have not searched out the facts. But if they are on his side, I do hope he sues. And for some big bucks.

Too much money, too much idle time and far too much ego.

Posted by: theo1 | April 22, 2010 6:53 AM

Well to all of you who think that BR7 is innocent and that these woman are goldiggers, think about this. If he was so innocent, then explain why it is being widely reported that the Steelers are looking to trade him.

Posted by: lek91091 | April 22, 2010 6:31 AM

First I would like to clarify that innocent until proven guilty only matters in court. If you commit a crime you are guilty but you may never get caught or charged. This situation involved videotape that was recorded over, a potential crime scene that wasn't properly analyzed, a policeman who verbally abused the co-ed and had to resign, and many other details we have not heard about. The idea that women who say they were raped are looking for fame doesn't ring true. Where are the famous women that this applies to. Is Kobe's acussor on Dancing with the Stars.

Posted by: thrh | April 22, 2010 3:00 AM

The police report certainly doesn't seem too damning, where's the evidence of her fighting him off? She didn't and she's pissed he told her to beat it after he did his thing. It's her word against his. Guilty until proven innocent. Why he bothers with these girls I'll never understand since she's likely a fat troll. He ought to just pay for it. EFF Goodell and the NFL all worried about image. No one cares that watches the NFL.

Posted by: johnsonm1 | April 22, 2010 12:44 AM

Man, Ben hooked up with a chick that had buyer's remorse OR, she was looking to get PAID. That's all it is. The cops know it, the women know it, everyone knows it, even the usual fat, perpetually angry manhatin' WOMEN know it. Ben R. does not NEED to rape chicks. NONE of these guys do. These doods got poon rollin' at em 24/7/365. Even the chick that Mike Tyson "raped" told her grrrlies she was goin' out that night to get PAID. Problem is, poon don't play fair anymore. They gotta get PAID. Or FAMOUS.

Please. The fat, ugly and angry chicks here complaining about Ben are just catty, jealous, man-hating broads.

All that said, Ben REALLY needs to have one of his fellas' wives or girlfriends fix him up with one of their friends (who will be guaranteed to be a perfect 10) and quit pickin' up the phootie out on the road. The environment is to castrate the famous rich guys and make sure they can't have sex. This is gonna cost Ben 2.8 million. One act.

On a per-act basis, that's far more than Tiger paid, per act, even with endorsement losses. Of course, Tiger got sex thousands of times with dozens of women. But still, just sayin'.

Posted by: JamesChristian | April 21, 2010 11:42 PM

This is sad. Generally speaking guys in his position have to fend off women. Must have a screw loose.

I'm not one for destroying the guy, but I think sending him home for a year would probably be good.

Posted by: A1965bigdog | April 21, 2010 11:01 PM

Ben needs to be prosecuted, convicted and raped while in jail. Then he will understand what he has put his victims through. I wonder if the one of victims will change their minds and pursue charges against him in the future.

Posted by: neil64 | April 21, 2010 10:47 PM

Forget the incident because you don't know who to believe.
But the stuff he did admit to -- someday ya gotta grow up boy.

Posted by: kls1 | April 21, 2010 10:13 PM

i guess you have to bet on dog fighting for the NFL or criminal justice system to notice. someone probably already posted this but it needs to be reiterated.

Posted by: anonymous3 | April 21, 2010 9:32 PM

That this girl was in the bar drinking illegally completely destroys her credibility as an accuser. No DA would ever bring this case to trial unless there were witnesses who actually saw the assault. It still doesn't change the impression that Roethlisberger is human scum.

Posted by: randysbailin | April 21, 2010 9:22 PM

A 20 year old woman is in a bar. How did she get in. Since she is under age she must of lied about her age or committed fraud by using a fake ID. She also knew that Ben is over 21. Did she tell Ben she was under age when he offered her a drink? Are we supposed to take her word? If a drunk man and a drunk woman have sex, why is the man responsible. Its not in the law. Sounds like a serious double standard to me.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 8:51 PM

I personally like Ben as a Football Player for his skills on the Field. Now saying that, his Decision making skills are lacking. Wheter the Young Woman was drunk or not Ben was wrong. If she did say No! that is enough. Ben gave underage women Alcohol that in it self is against the Law!
Also men since the beginning of Time has tried to get over on Women while using Alcohol. The young Woman should have known better... But how many Older adults controlled themselves when Drunk, the fact they are drunk means they have lost control. Ben morals are lacking, cause he did take advantage of a Drunk woman. Obviously he has trouble making it with a Sober Woman. He deserves what ever he gets.
If I was a Rooney I would get rid of him for his Decision making abilities, if not his possibly Raping a Woman...

Posted by: GeeMan3 | April 21, 2010 8:41 PM

Duke all over. A woman makes an allegation and all the idiots run to support it. Nobody worries about the damage done to the men when the allegation is dismissed.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 8:24 PM

Throw him out.
He's a loser in life.
Can't be a leader on the field and be a loser in life.

What game is Ben playing?
Or better yet, what drug is he on?

Perhaps the motorcycle accident did affect him. Bipolar? Schizoid?

Posted by: TheBabeNemo | April 21, 2010 8:19 PM

Dear men it has nothing to do with black or white.
The question is why men, rich or poor, black or white go "down market?" when they have a choice to go "up market"?.

Posted by: JillCalifornia | April 21, 2010 8:17 PM

Pittsburgh should trade Big Ben to the Redskins for McNabb. It would provide the Steelers with a good QB and make Snyder look like an idiot who can't make up his mind: two good things in one.

Posted by: webg | April 21, 2010 7:56 PM

What a joke!...If he was black, nothing would be done....half the blacks in the league have multiple arrest records!......they went after him because he's white and nobody will cry racism!

Posted by: msg8568 | April 21, 2010 7:55 PM

This guy is a serial rapist. If he was black he would be in jail for 30 years for the two or three rapes. I hope the Steelers put what is right above money. I bet Dallas picks him up, they have no since of right and wrong and he would fit right in there. If he was black in Texas he would get the death penalty for raping "white women".

Georgia drinking age is 21. Absolutely no punishment! Double standard.

I love the Steelers, but its time for the Steelers to get rid of Roethisberger. I'd rather have a few so-so seasons instead of the constant embarrassment to the Steel City and its team. The timing is perfect with tonight's draft beginning and teams looking for QBs. Like Tiger, Roethisberger is a huge disappointment to his fan base.

You apologists and enablers are the people who have created this environment where athletes get treated like gods and get away with murder. He could open the door at any hotel and just grab any one of the hangers on but no, he chases a girl into a bathroom and attacked her.
He is a scumbag pure and simple. I hope that the Steelers send him to Raiders where his career will die.

Many football's fans are female, many male have daughters and many have high moral standards, so Com. Goddell had them in mind and he made the correct decision. He took time to personally interview Ben R. before deciding.
The decision is good for football and for sports in general.

This isn't about "good enough for government work". And in this day and age, I think we can all universally agree that the government isn't working for the American people.

This is about people that work in a unique industry. They are compensated much more than the average American, and as such, more is expected of them, and rightly so.

From a business perspective, it is incomprehensible why anyone would want to do anything to threaten the prosperity of the very business that offers them such financial security.

From a common sense standpoint, it is incomprehensible how someone with so much to lose could do something so wreckless, as if he had nothing to lose. Or perhaps, that's exactly the problem. That these players, particularly ones like Rothlisberger, who routinely stands in the pocket and takes the big hits to complete a pass, all have the mentality of, "I've got nothing to lose." And if that's the case, I'd rather not support professional sports. I've got a daughter, and if that happened to her, I'm not sure that the commissioner of the sport would have had the opportunity to suspend his employee.

Everyone has something to lose. Rothlisberger will have the opportunity to gain back whatever he lost. This girl will not.

Posted by: ilovewilbon | April 21, 2010 7:05 PM

The guy has never been charged with anything, unlike alot of the thugs in the league. But, since he's white, the sissified commissioner figured he'd better suspend him so that the black "activists" didn't call him a racist and protest outside his office.. He caved, pure and simple........What a pathetic white sissy!

That's rape.

He's lucky he wasn't put away for many, many years. Darn right he's gonna accept any NFL discipline he gets and shut the heck up.

Silly stupid girls shouldn't get themselves legally drunk in a nightclub because then they have to depend on the kindness/politeness of men you don't know.
Why put yourself in that position? If something does happen, who is to say that you will remember it?

Think, girls, think. These men ain't going clubbing to be your "best friend."

That's the thing, she couldn't remember so there was no case.

What Ben did was very wrong and now he might not be a Steeler anymore.

I hope he learns something from it.

Athletes have, unfortunately, been treated like Gods since college and develop an attitude that nothing they do is wrong and that they can do whatever they want. They believe the rules that apply to everyone else do not apply to them.

In America we place more value on actors, rock stars and athletes than we do people who serve in our communities as big brothers and big sisters, mentor youth, work with crack addicted babies, and people who are working every day trying to find a cure for diabetes, aids, heart disease, muscular dystrophy, and cancer.

It's long past the time when we as a country stop putting actors, singers, dancers, and professional athletes on a pedestal. It's also long past the time when we should start recognizing the contributions of every day people in our society who work tirelessly every single day to make our communities better.

Worst case scenario Ben did nothing wrong and has had terrible luck being accused of things he didn't do. Then it should be no problem at all for him to follow what the Commish has laid out for him.

If on the other hand he did engage in at least some nefarious activities, or he actually does have some more serious behavioral problems, then the NFL is doing him an enormous favor, and ideally he will get the best help money can buy.

Think about it this way -- most employers can fire people for this sort of thing and even less, and in Ben's case even if he were fired and never played another down, he's a very rich young man. On the other hand, if he has indeed acted badly, he is being given the best chance possible to straighten up, and it's now up to him to get with it.....with great gifts come great responsibilities.

I'm sorry, but since when can someone legally drunk give consent? And the DA did not say there was a lack of evidence to prosecute, he said there was a lack of evidence to get a conviction. The hospital exam found vaginal tearing and bruising. You know what the difference is between the Richmond High School gang rape and this? Both females were drunk, and it was open season on both -- but if you're a football star, it seems, no one prosecutes.

Guess Must Be a Clinton Fan

President Bill Clinton and Naomi Campbell are among the rich and famous who have flown aboard convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet, according to flight logs from Epstein’s private aircraft.

The flight logs from 2003-05 have been filed in one of the many civil lawsuits pending against the billionaire money manager. Nearly two dozen young women have filed lawsuits against Epstein — some already settled — all alleging Epstein sexually abused them as minors at his El Brillo Way home.

Epstein, 57, was released from jail in July after serving 13 months of an 18-month state sentence for soliciting a minor for prostitution and soliciting prostitution.

Attorney Brad Edwards, who represents Jane Doe and two other Epstein victims, filed the flight logs to back up his case that Epstein traveled across state lines for the purpose of sexually abusing Jane Doe and other victims.

“Epstein engaged in the act of trafficking minors across state or country borders for the purposes of sex or prostitution between 2000 and the present. ... Epstein used the fact that he had transported other minors across state and country borders for sexual purposes to help persuade Jane Doe to be sexually abused by him. Epstein also asked Jane Doe to bring other girls to him. Epstein committed the same sorts of acts against other minor girls,” Edwards wrote in his pleading.

There are no allegations that anyone who traveled on Epstein’s airplanes had anything to do with the sexual abuse, other than Epstein employee Sarah Kellen. Kellen acted as Epstein’s procurer, according to many of the teens, court documents and police reports.

The flight logs are for his Boeing 727 and Gulfstream jets.

Epstein, who has donated more than $100,000 over the years to candidates from the Democratic Party, has also hosted several high-profile Democrats aboard his aircraft.

Clinton flew with Epstein from Nov. 4-9, 2003, to destinations that included Oslo, Norway; Russia, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. On April 2, 2003, Campbell flew from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Brazil.

Failed Palm Beach mayoral candidate Gerry Goldsmith also was a guest on Epstein’s plane, traveling from Palm Beach International Airport to New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport on Oct. 19, 2003. Former Harvard president and current director of the White House’s National Economic Council Larry Summers flew more than once on Epstein’s aircraft.

Also flying with Epstein during those years: Sandy Berger, who was the country’s national security adviser under Clinton; former Colombian President Andres Pastrana; and high-profile attorney Alan Dershowitz, who is part of Epstein’s defense team

NO, he did not get suspended for buying an underage girl in a bar a drink, he got suspended for forcing himself on a drunken underage girl after having his bodyguard take her down a hallway alone and prop on a chair to pleasure his highness when he arrived, which is creep to say the least. They didn't prosecute because there was no evidence the girl was raped.

Just because an underage girl is in a bar doesn't mean that she's a piece of meat to be filled with alcohol and taken advantage of.

Posted by: oo7 | April 21, 2010 4:28 PM

You'd think that a QB entering the middle phase of his career and starting to look pudgy would find better ways to spend his time than trying to live in a Girls Gone Wild video.

To anyone defending him: Would you want *your* daughter anywhere near him? Personally, I think he's darned lucky that the officers at the scene and the club owner covered for him. Otherwise, that local DA would be busy nailing Ben's scalp to the wall.

How does this action taken by the NFL compare with what they did to Michael Vick. Michael was booted Out Of The NFL for dog fighting. This guy Raped a Girl, and a 20 year old at that. Does this action seem fair, or is it just me???

Posted by: WhitneyDavid | April 21, 2010 4:16 PM

I thought America stood for innocent until proven guilty. How many other players have been suspended without being convicted of a crime. To those who think Ben wasnt suspeded longer because he is white, I think Tiger Woods brought a whole lot more disgrace to golf than ben did to tyhe NFL. Why wasnt he suspended, because he is black?
Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:15 PM
*****************************************

Suspend Tiger for what? Adultery? Since when is adultery a crime? Rape, which is what Ben was accused of, guilty or not, is. However, that's not what he was suspended for. He gave alcohol to underage people. Funny how he wasn't charged with that by the police. Any other bartender, liquor store owner or regular Joe Schmo would be locked up in a heartbeat. But then again, none of them is a star QB making 20+ mil a year.

Like the 2008 incident, I'm sure Rothlisberger's reps have reached out to the 20-year old college student and offered her a financial settlement in order not to testify. Without their key witness, the Georgia DA had no chance of proving his case. Given Rothleisberger's history, I tend to doubt that the 2008 alleged sexual assault (now a civil case) and the more recent one were isolated instances.

'Date rape' cases are very hard to prove in a court of law and many women don't want to go through the humiliating process of testifying not knowing the outcome. I'm sure that was part of the reason the most recent case wasn't prosecuted.

Posted by: wizfan89 | April 21, 2010 4:14 PM

You have to believe that the sentence was as harsh as it was because of the Rooney's. Many NFL players have gotten a lot less for worse. Ben deserves what he has coming to him not only because the NFL has standards... but look at Ray Lewis.. what a shining example he is.... but because the Steelers have higher standards of what is expected. I wish more teams took the stance they did and expect players to be role models.

Posted by: tbastian | April 21, 2010 4:09 PM

Please don't compare what Tiger did (consenual sex with a consenting adult) to what Ben is accused of doing (rape - sexual assault - forcible sex against someone's will). They are not comparable.

Posted by: rlj1 | April 21, 2010 3:55 PM

Ben is a punk. I am sure he paid the lady off.

A real man never takes advantage of a woman when she has had too much to drink and is too intoxicated to consent. Obviously Big Ben wasn't happy w/ a date later that night w/ Ms Palmer and her five friends and decided to allegedly force the issue.

NFL has big problems they have to treat white QB's the same as other knuckleheads and even come down harder on them. NFL may have an alleged serial rapist as one of their top players. Not the best for the game or their image.

What team would want an alleged serial rapist?

For all those who want to see Ben get on a plane outta Pittsburgh. Hold on now. He didn't rape a nun in front of Heinz Field & 500 witnesses.

Maybe he walked out of the men's room & forgot to zip up. So his one-eyed trouser trout peeked out by mistake.

Posted by: uncivil | April 21, 2010 3:45 PM

The prosecutor should have brought a charge of kidnapping. Kidnapping requires that a person be held against their will. There is sufficient evidence to prove the woman was held against her will. The guards were complicit and there are witnesses that the woman was being held.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 3:37 PM

ISLANDMON, you need to shut up. the only reason the prosecutors dropped the case is because the victim was going to be a reluctant witness. There was evidence, there were witnesses, there was cause, but it's really hard to prosecute a rape case if the girl isn't going to get on the stand.
Why wasn't she going to get on the stand, you ask? Because Big Ben's lawyers made it clear they were going to run a smear campaign on her reputation.
He should be suspended for the whole season.

The "Rooney name" has been besmirched? Please, look it up ! The "old man" was in it up to his ears. As a Steelers' fan, I think Ben's time is up in Pittsburgh. Time to go. I know he wasn't charged with a crime (as some seem to think an accusation means guilt or commission of rape) but when a relationship goes bad, it's better to end it. It will never be what it was with the Rooneys, the city, the fans or his team mates. Too bad Goodell ain't the Pope.

Posted by: mitlen | April 21, 2010 3:13 PM

Ben was suspended so that the NFL could say it treats all players equally. So now the NFL did a better investigation then the Georgia police force

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 3:13 PM

What's the difference between Big Ben and Tiger? Seems like Tiger's friends want to play the game. Big Ben, on the other hand, is apparently so crude and repulsive That his playmates want to call the cops.

Posted by: sameolddoc | April 21, 2010 3:13 PM

Read the Commissioner's letter carefully. It was NOT a "he said/she said" situation for which Roethlisberger is being disciplined. It's because he bought alcohol for underage students: "As the District Attorney concluded, the extensive investigatory record shows that you contributed to the irresponsible consumption of alcohol by purchasing (or facilitating the purchase of) alcoholic beverages for underage college students, at least some of whom were likely already intoxicated." Had woman or a non-athlete done this, it's still illegal. The Commissioner was right.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 3:11 PM

It doesn't matter whether Ben faced charges or not. The Rooney family won't stand for this kind of behavior. That's why they got rid of Santonio. They have their own standards of character - no matter who you are. If nothing serious happened, Ben would not have been suspended for six games.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 3:08 PM

Why should he apologize to her. Either it was rape or it wasn't. If it was rape he should have been charged, but he wasn't. Men should have no more responsibility in sexual encounters then women. If he was drunk and she was drunk, why is he responsible. seems like a double standard to me.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 3:03 PM

As a lifelong Steelers fan and the father of two young daughters, I think he should've been suspended for the entire year. Though he has twice now escaped the law he's disgraced the Rooney name and the franchise. It's only a matter of time before he commits another act like this. The Steelers need to get rid of him.

Posted by: markr_mcintyreyahoocom | April 21, 2010 3:03 PM

No apology or mention at all of the girl in his apology last week, not even whether or not it was a misunderstanding. So is that all that he's sorry for, the "negative attention" and disappointing his family? It seems that the only thing he regrets is the publicity, and it seems that is all the Rooneys regret. But I would hope that they would not want such a specimen to represent them and their team.

Posted by: offset99 | April 21, 2010 3:02 PM

I don't know if Ben is a rapist or not. What I do know however, is that he is a colossal idiot...

I mean, having sex in a public place is a bad idea to start with. Doing it with a drunk under 21 year old girl is worse. Doing this as a superstar athlete is just plain idiotic... Steelers should get rid of him asap.

Posted by: mburix | April 21, 2010 3:00 PM

sounds to me like he is a jerk, a rapist with a good lawyer and some luck, is guilty of purchasing/sharing alcohol with underage drinkers and a spoiled @$$ wipe. Posted by: ksilton | April 21, 2010 2:58 PM

It was a henke situation - to put it mildly - and certainly, no girl deserves to be raped. But what did she expect? Did you read her written statement? "I said no and then he had sex with me." No screaming, no fighting, no nothing. Was an after the fact complaint, if you ask me.

Posted by: shanks1 | April 21, 2010 2:56 PM

You can look at the evidence by reading the newspaper but the Georgia police wont bring charges after they see the evidence in person. What makes your judgement so much better? Having sex with a college sophmore in a bathroom when you are in your twenties is something that happens a lot more than you know.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:56 PM

The NFL has had a player gone to jail on illegal dog fighting, a number of players suspended for using illegal drugs and using band drugs. Now you have a player accused twice of rape. Now when is the NFL going to start cleaning up it act, before you start to lose the fan base? What needs to be done is to weed out the NFL players that bring the dark evil element to the NFL. Their are a lot of good players out there with the moral and descent character which would love to play in the NFL. Set the standards much higher and have each players sign that code of ethics when he enters the NFL, and have the penalty written in writing if the player breaks the code of ethics. This must be a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. This is the only way the NFL can be clean-up.

Posted by: jk330 | April 21, 2010 2:54 PM

Use some common sense buddy. He has been accused of raping not one but TWO women in the past year alone. The very fact that he had sex with a college sophomore in the bathroom of a bar (which is not disputed) tells us he is not right in the head.

Look, I don't for a second believe Kobe Bryant raped that girl. Nor do I believe the Duke lacrosse kids raped that stripper. But if you look at all the evidence in Rothlisberger's case, only a fool would deny he raped her.

Posted by: Geopolitics101 | April 21, 2010 2:46 PM

I am pretty disgusted that some of you think that dressing a certain way or getting drunk means that you deserve to be raped. Flirting doesn't mean you deserve to be raped, neither does kissing or anything else. At any point when a woman or man says NO then that is it. Forcing someone to have sex after that is wrong and a crime, period.

Rapists can be very good football players. So can murderers and dog-abusers. That doesn't excuse their actions. Men who are cowards pick women who are weaker or drunk to take advantage of, like in this case. The fact that a woman, or a man, is drunk does not make it okay for a man to force her to have sex.

So he's either 1. An idiot, 2. A sexual predator or 3. Both (Oh please let some dipsh*t write he's just misunderstood, unlucky or all the "ho's" are out to get him - the world benefits realizing fools like you exist only to root for a f***ing game.

I hope the Steelers get rid of him and I hope if he ever does this again there are witnesses. I just can't believe it is only 6 games. What stupid, infantile dirtbag.

Young women are so silly & naive. Drink too much. And it doesn't take much for them to get drunk. Slipping on the bar floor in their stripper heels. Everything hanging out for all to see.

"I like to flirt. I don't like men to think I'm serious & make a pass. That's rude, disgusting & perverted. Eeeeewwww.
Excuse me, my left breast just fell out."

TEE HEE

When he's found guilty THEN he should be suspended. Not like the cops pulled him over & found a kilo of coke in his trunk.

You don't want to leave a team like the Steelers & go to some loser club like the Skins or the Eagles.

You hold your head high when you're a Steeler.

Ben says he didnt commit a crime, the police say he didnt commit a crime and the woman says he did. Why do some immediately believe the woman. Didn't the same thing happen at Duke a few years ago and quite a few lives were ruined before the truth came out that the woman was lying.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:31 PM

Why are men susposed to be responsible when they are drinking and women get a free pass. Are they the weaker sex?

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:28 PM

Ben had sex with the woman in the bathroom and she wasnt too happy when he walked away when he was finished. It makes him a jerk.....not a rapist. If the NFL is going to start suspending players for their sexual contact, after a few weeks there wont be any players left to play.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:26 PM

If the victim's version is true, it sounds like rape, and he will lose more than just four games. Despite no criminal charges, this whole think seems pretty bad.

BR7 is a total douche. Somehow I see Will Farrell playing the lead role in an upcoming mockumentary film about BR7....

Posted by: spambucket6 | April 21, 2010 2:25 PM

What a drag . . . you'd think that a wealthy athlete would be able to get enough consensual sex to keep himself occupied. Makes you think there's really something wrong with him.

It's gonna be a rebuilding year for the Steelers. I say give the job to Batch. He's got ability and experience--enough to get by while the new kids learn the ropes.

Posted by: writinron | April 21, 2010 2:24 PM

It's about time!! Everywhere this POS goes some girl seems to get violated! And don't say it's because he's high profile, so are a lot of other single athletes, and they seem to be fine.

Posted by: lek91091 | April 21, 2010 2:23 PM

Why is it that this rapist is allowed to walk free? He should be in jail for 20 years!

What he did is 100 times worse than what Michael Vick did. And I hate Michael Vick. Now I hate "Big Ben" worse.

Will be a Steelers fan again after when Ben is gone, not until.

Posted by: joeyjoey | April 21, 2010 2:23 PM

How hard is "no" to understand really?

Posted by: Nymous | April 21, 2010 2:22 PM

Ben told her to consume shots of alcohol......and she did. I guess she has no mind of her own. I thought she was a college student.

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:20 PM

Well, if looks like Al Davis and the Raiders have another possible bad boy recruit.

Posted by: maggots | April 21, 2010 2:19 PM

Nothing good comes from hanging out at nightclubs when you're a pro athlete.

Alcohol. Too many gold diggers & hoes just waiting to make money from you. Heck, it beats working. Drugs.

Why does Ben need to rape a woman? That doesn't make any sense to me. In Pittsburgh he's treated like a God. Cat has two Super Bowl rings.

Let some silly, stupid women ruin his career? I think not. Torture them til they speak the truth. No exaggerating or hysteria. THE TRUTH.

You're not the Virgin Mary, girls. Stop acting like you have been "disrespected" or saw something terrifying. Boo hoo!

GO STEELERS

Posted by: uncivil | April 21, 2010 2:16 PM

NO ONE CAN PROVE HE DID ANYTHING WRONG!!!! No criminal charges have been filed.
i think the CHICKIES attacked him and lookin to get rich.

Posted by: racerdoc | April 21, 2010 2:16 PM

I thought America stood for innocent until proven guilty. How many other players have been suspended without being convicted of a crime. To those who think Ben wasnt suspeded longer because he is white, I think Tiger Woods brought a whole lot more disgrace to golf than ben did to tyhe NFL. Why wasnt he suspended, because he is black?

Posted by: islandmon | April 21, 2010 2:15 PM

Rapping women should be against the law!

Raping them also.

Posted by: gce1356 | April 21, 2010 2:13 PM

I guess Mr. Bigshot's sh*t stinks, after all.

Posted by: waterfrontproperty | April 21, 2010 2:12 PM

I am a cradle Pittsburgher and die hard Steelers fan. I am sorely disappointed in Ben's actions, but I am not surprised. Ben was recruited to the NFL when he was fresh out of college, became the team's star QB a year later, and acquired a multimillion dollar contract... and he's under 30. People, when put on a pedestal, adored, and given everything they want, have a hard time with the word "no". Even though there is no evidence to implicate him, I would bet that he has assaulted these women and he needs to face the consequences.

Posted by: jromaniello | April 21, 2010 2:11 PM

If Roger Goodell thinks the NFL brand is tarnished what do you think "Big Dumbo's" mother and father are thinking about right now.

Ben's mother speaking to her husband:

"Did we really raise a child that is this dumb?"

Ben's father: "No, but then you know that kids are always smarter than their parents."

Suspend this clown for the entire season and hope that the Steelers trade him to Oakland.

Posted by: dharper2 | April 21, 2010 2:03 PM

I was born in the 'burg and even after living in Nova for 40 years, I'm still a 'burgher. Ben brought shame to a town that loved him and hurt every player who ever donned the black and gold. He should have gotten 6 games for damage to the league, a season for the damage to the team and teammates, and a lifetime ban for the betrayal of the Steeler Nation.

Posted by: NICKYNUNYA | April 21, 2010 1:59 PM

"NFL -- if Mike Vick can get suspended for 2 years - wow --- for Dog Fighting.

What is been going to get for inappropriately - (damn near raping)touching women. we are at a body count of 4 WOMEN so FAR.

Perhaps he does need to sit home for a year or two.

Posted by: gokusc1 | April 21, 2010 12:55 PM"

Darned near best statement in sports made this year to date!

Posted by: cbmuzik | April 21, 2010 1:57 PM

Took the NFL a long time to announce a suspension and I wonder why.....WHITE BOY I GUESS...he is an alright QB but is overrated BIG TIME... CLUMSY WITH NO BRAINS and was lucky to get off too easy!!!!

Posted by: gman54 | April 21, 2010 1:53 PM

"Why is this not large letter front page news - EVERYday like Tiger was? When Tiger did not commit a crime and was not suspended from the PGA."

Indeed.

What Tiger did was practice adultery with consenting women. This goon forced an unwilling woman to have sex with him. That's rape.

And then he thinks he can call the shots about what kind of discipline he gets?

Where do these knuckle-draggers get their sense of entitlement?

Posted by: haveaheart | April 21, 2010 1:49 PM

The more you read into testimony of the Georgia events, it really does seam like Big Ben IS a serial rapist. Shame on the NFL for allowing this.

SHAME on the Georgia police for trying to cover this up. Memo to Georgia police: You are not Big Ben's personal security or PR firm, you(in theory) are there to protect the citizens of your State. Wake up and do your jobs. Shame on you.

Our society, "worships" people simply cause they can toss a football or shoot a basketball, at what price? Apparently, our humanity and civility.

Rosthlisberger you are a pathetic man and should be imprisioned.

NFL: Shame on you.

This is really disgusting and a sad indictment on our times.

Posted by: OkayUSA | April 21, 2010 12:22 PM

It is and so is LYING TO THE POLICE. Which is exactly what this little HO did. That is why ALL CHARGES we're dropped. Dumb@zz

Posted by: askgees | April 21, 2010 1:40 PM

Your right about we could have him instead of chunky soup! Believe me that's the only way Shanahan would win with this team.

I believe he's the best quarterback in the league! Pittsburgh is trippin if they trade him, it will be another 20 years until they win a championship again. Big Chin had been there awhile before he won a super bowl and who was it with?

Yes the guy got to work on his people skills.

Posted by: SOLVBACK | April 21, 2010 1:27 PM

Ben Rapistberger should have gotten a lot more than four games.

Posted by: cali_snowboarder | April 21, 2010 1:20 PM

I say throw the book at the bum.....it's obvious he doesn't get it....A source said this week that Roethlisberger would accept any disciplinary action imposed on him if that discipline was not "too harsh."....give me a break.....he's lucky this isn't Puritan times or that he's not in the Middle East....those people would castrate him and feed his gonads to him!!!! And this is coming from a life long Cowboy's fan....I HATE the Steelers!!!! But even they don't deserve this piece of trash!!!!

Posted by: dadofkyra | April 21, 2010 1:14 PM

hey okayusa, what do you have against female rappers? Queen Latifah, Emcee Lyte, etc?

why you hatin'?

Posted by: Please_Fix_VAs_Roads | April 21, 2010 1:11 PM

Hey, trade him to Cleveland. According to Joakim Noah, there's nothing to do there, so he'd stay out of trouble....

Posted by: gonzodon | April 21, 2010 1:06 PM

1. Why is this not large letter front page news - EVERYday like Tiger was? When Tiger did not commit a crime and was not suspended from the PGA.
2. Don't count Dan Snyder out? He may trade that #1 (#4 overall) pick for this perceived criminal. He DID sign Deion when he already had Champ AND Darrell, 2 HOF CB's already on board - LOL
3. He DID sign Jeff George when he had a future SB winning QB on board
4. He did sign Fat Albert when he already had a top 5 D

Posted by: kedavis | April 21, 2010 1:03 PM

If Snyder hadn't already traded for Chunky Soup McPukington, I would have said that Snyder would be all over this one...

Posted by: Randy_Hawkins | April 21, 2010 12:57 PM

Either the Rooneys are who they say they are, or Ben Roethlisberger is a Steeler. One or the other. Can't have it both ways.

Ben is a RAPIST!!! He has no morals. If you read his original statement to the policeman that got forced out he claimed he saw her in the VIP room and told her she had to leave because she was too drunk to be there. After being lawyered up he admitted to having sexual contact with her. The owner of the club and some of Ben's party said they saw joyner walk the girl back the hallway and place her on the stool. The girl is not without fault, she should have contolled the amount she drank, but no is still no.

The state of Georgia's monthlong investigation into a rape accusation leveled against Ben Roethlisberger uncovered an allegation by a second woman that the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback forced himself upon her. The incident allegedly occurred during a party at Roethlisberger's house in central Georgia. ADD THE NEVADA WOMAN AND YOU GOT A BIG PROBLEM TO SAY THE LEAST.

According to one, Nicole Biancofiore, the alleged victim "did not want to report the incident to a random police officer," the case file shows.
Ms. Biancofiore called a friend, Baldwin County Sheriff's Deputy Shawn Tapley, to ask for advice. He told her to report to an officer downtown.
"Biancofiore also stated that [the woman] did not want to report it because she did not want people to know about the incident and was embarrassed by what had happened."

I am a huge Steelers fan, and I am very disappointed. How many more women is gonna have to be drunk with -- and it be the womans fault that he is letting things get out of hand.
So what do we have here a serial rapist?

NFL -- if Mike Vick can get suspended for 2 years - wow --- for Dog Fighting.

What is been going to get for inappropriately - (damn near raping)touching women. we are at a body count of 4 WOMEN so FAR.

Perhaps he does need to sit home for a year or two.

Should be the whole season; I'd settle for 8 games. Dude is pervy...

Posted by: kahlua87 | April 21, 2010 12:21 PM

Well if this doesn't get "Frank the Tank" to finally grow up, nothing will.

Posted by: bendersx6 | April 21, 2010 12:02 PM

Yeah if he doesn't play this year he can always get a job as a bouncer at a stip club. He should fit right in.
