Tebow drafted in first round
UPDATED (11:26 p.m.)...
NEW YORK--Tim Tebow is a first-round draft choice, after all, as the Denver Broncos selected him with the 25th overall pick.
Tebow's prospects for NFL success had been vigorously debated before the draft, even after he won a Heisman Trophy and two national championships at the University of Florida.
But he was the second quarterback drafted Thursday--24 spots behind Oklahoma's Sam Bradford but ahead of Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen, who was not chosen Thursday.
Tebow joins fellow quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn in Denver.
"I'm just so excited and truly blessed," Tebow told the league-owned NFL Network in Jacksonville, Fla., where he watched the proceedings on television with friends and family members after declining an invitation to attend the draft at Radio City Music Hall. "I just want to thank the organization in Denver. I want to thank Coach [Josh] McDaniels for believing in me and giving me a shot. I'll give everything that I can to prove him right."
Some draft observers predicted that he'd fall into the second or third round, or even later, after he struggled at the Senior Bowl and then reworked his throwing motion, but the Broncos used the second of their two opening-round picks on him.
The Broncos took Georgia Tech wide receiver Demaryius Thomas 22nd overall. Thomas is a potential replacement for the traded Brandon Marshall.
