Lawrence Taylor charged with rape

UPDATED (8:01 p.m.)...

Lawrence Taylor, the former New York Giants linebacker whose quarterback-chasing exploits secured him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was arrested by police in the Suffern, N.Y., area early Thursday morning and was charged with rape.

Authorities accused Taylor of paying $300 for sex with a 16-year-old runaway from New York City. The alleged victim in the case, who was identified only by her initials during Taylor's arraignment Thursday afternoon, was accompanied to Taylor's hotel room by a man who later was arrested in New York, authorities said.

Taylor's attorney denied the allegations and said he will contest the charges vigorously in court.

Taylor was charged with third-degree rape, a felony involving sex with a minor below the age of 17, and patronizing a prostitute in the third degree, a misdemeanor.

The felony charge is punishable by up to four years in jail and the misdemeanor charge is punishable by up to a year in jail if Taylor is convicted, authorities said at an afternoon news conference conducted shortly before Taylor appeared in court for his arraignment.

A judge set bail for Taylor at $75,000. Taylor was ordered by the judge to have no contact with the alleged victim in the case.

Taylor's attorney, Arthur Aidala, said in court that Taylor "is denying these charges.... He is a law-abiding citizen."

Aidala said later at a news conference that "each and every aspect of this case and each and every aspect of these charges will be litigated to the fullest extent of the law" and that Taylor "did not have sex with anybody." He disputed an account by authorities that Taylor acknowledged to investigators paying for sex.

"Lawrence Taylor did not rape anybody," Aidala said. "Am I clear?"

Authorities said that police entered Taylor's room at a Holiday Inn around 3:55 a.m. and arrested him. The incident occurred early Thursday morning, said Christopher P. St. Lawrence, the supervisor of the town of Ramapo, N.Y.

St. Lawrence and Peter Brower, the chief of police in Ramapo, said at a news conference that Taylor did not cause a facial injury suffered by the alleged victim.

"We have no evidence to indicate he caused any injury to the victim," Brower said.

Brower said that Taylor paid $300 for sex. Investigators found a bottle of alcohol but no drugs in the hotel room, Brower said.

St. Lawrence said that the alleged victim was accompanied to Taylor's hotel room by a man identified by authorities as Rasheed Davis.

The alleged victim was a runaway who was 15 when she was reported missing in New York City in March, St. Lawrence said.

Following Thursday's alleged incident, the alleged victim contacted her uncle while being driven back to New York City by Davis, authorities said. Her uncle contacted police and officers arrested Davis in New York, according to authorities.

According to the Associated Press, Davis was arrested on charges of unlawful imprisonment, assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The AP described Davis as a 36-year-old parolee and reported that the alleged victim had been staying with him in the Bronx in recent weeks. The AP reported that, according to police, Davis punched and kicked the alleged victim, took her to Taylor's hotel against her will and told her to have sex with Taylor.

St. Lawrence said that authorities in Ramapo did not know details about the possible relationship between Taylor and Davis or how the sexual encounter between Taylor and the alleged victim was arranged.

Taylor, 51, played for the Giants between the 1981 and 1993 seasons. He was selected to 10 Pro Bowls and was named the NFL's defensive player of the year in the 1981, '82 and '86 seasons. Taylor was named to the NFL's 75th anniversary team in 1994 and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1999. He is regarded as one of the top pass rushers in the history of the sport.

Taylor has had legal problems in the past, including multiple arrests on drug-related charges. But he reportedly has said his drug problems are behind him.

Taylor competed last year in ABC's televised dancing competition, "Dancing with the Stars."

This guy is scum regardless of whether he knew her age or not. I mean just the fact that he was willing to have sex with a girl who was dragged in by another man-(who happened to be an ex-con) says alot about him. I mean how many guys here would be ok with having sex with a girl who had to be TAKEN to their hotel by ANOTHER man? Even if the girl didn't put up a fight he had to have known that she was being strong armed by another man to do this. We don't know all the facts, but if you read the reports the victim never accuses Taylor of physically forcing her to have sex- rather she accuses the ex-con she was staying with of hitting her & forcing her to have sex with Taylor. So she may have "consented" but it looks like she was definitely forced into it. When Taylor saw that the ex-con had to basically make her to go into the room with him that should've made him go limp right then and there. No decent guy would have sex with a young girl after witnessing that.

Having sex w/ a minor. C'mon LT, who do you think you are, a Catholic Priest?

Posted by: randysbailin | May 7, 2010 3:37 PM

KDSmallJr:
I see your point about whether it was consensual or not. Question is did he know? That is why I want to wait before I judge him. I spent 5 years as a high school teacher, and I saw young girls that if I didn't know they were at my school I would have assumed they were older then their ages. In fact, I had young teacher ask one time," How do you deal with being around these young girls?" I told him two things, "I look at them as children" and "I don't want my face plastered on the six o'clock news". I hope LT is not guilty of knowing her age. For a legacy that is already tarnished, that would totally ruin the image of a man who changed the way the position of linebacker was played in the NFL.

Posted by: MrKeys | May 7, 2010 12:14 PM

To KDSmallJr:
As I understand your statement, I was speaking to the headline, and the mindset of those that are ready throw him to wolves. I understand that prostitution is illegal, but in the news he is being excused of rape. They are two completely different issues. It is not rape if she accepts the money - it is an illegal service. They can get him on prostitution charges and they should. I don't have a problem with that. Now do I view him as a sex offender or pervert? No I don't, but that is how he is going to be viewed in the public's eye, because most of us don't think past the headlines. We allow the headlines to think for us.

Posted by: MrKeys | May 7, 2010 12:00 PM

Dear MrKeys, Prostitution is illegal (in NY, anyway) as is having sex, whether consensual or not, with a minor. The question is whether or not Taylor had sex with the child. Not whether or not he forced himself on her. This is clear to anyone except a member of an organization promoting sexual activity with a minor.

Posted by: KDSmallJr | May 7, 2010 11:32 AM

Well, I guess the easist thing to do is to bash LT, but I'm not going to do that. I will say this, if he offered her $300 for a service, and she accepted the money - it is not rape. According to the article, he paid her $300 and for all he knew she was of age. Now, if he knew or she had acknowledged that she was under age, and he went on with having sex with her, then he is guilty of sex with a minor. I going to wait for facts on this one. Something doesn't sound right to me.

Posted by: MrKeys | May 7, 2010 10:06 AM

LOSER. Always was and always will be. Dexter Manley was punished more severely by the NFL for doing the same stuff Taylor was doing because Taylor was one of the faces of the NFL. It's time LT gets his due. Regarding Theismann and giving it a rest - I watched Taylor in a recent interview on MSG network and he was gloating about breaking Theismann's leg. The guy is a true JERK.

Let's see how the hyocrite Roger Goodell handles this little goodie.

Posted by: mitlen | May 7, 2010 9:18 AM

Why worry about Tiger Woods or Lawrence Taylor? What about Obama? He's screwing the whole country!

Posted by: ahashburn | May 7, 2010 9:04 AM

"Investigators found a bottle of alcohol but no drugs in the hotel room"

Did they look in LT's nose for drugs?

Posted by: CBT2 | May 7, 2010 7:53 AM

maybe they should stop playing...

Posted by: DwightCollins | May 7, 2010 6:27 AM

I just remembered an appropriate analogy.

Remember Traci Lords, the 80's porn star? Well, one of the causes of her rise to fame or infamy, was that she entered the business at the age of 15 and had sex with multiple other "actors" while underage. From my knowledge, none of them were ever charged with rape or had to register as a child molester or were charged with anything period. Ron Jeremy being among them, and I read his comments on the situation once where he said he had no clue and had no way of knowing, but that he absolutely would not have had sex with her had he known. Sure the sex business is murky at best, but that is why I think the benefit of the doubt should be given in most cases unless the facts are very clear to suggest otherwise.

Posted by: rphilli721 | May 6, 2010 11:45 PM

By the way, the previously much beloved Tiger Woods was probably close to being in a similar situation. I'm sure he does not know for sure whether all of his myriad of escorts he was with were of age either. Unless LT called around searching for some young prostitute and had knowledge of her age, this should be a standard John case. The guy who beat her and forced her into this is the guy that should have the book thrown at him. I'm not saying LT be completely exonerated, but 5 years and being listed as a sex offender seems a little harsh unless there is some proof that he knew her age. Seems his past reputation may be hurting him in this instance.

Let's assume for a minute she did this voluntarily. Why should he be charged with anything other than solicitation of a prostitute? Girls who do such aren't going around pronouncing they are underage and would most likely lie if asked - "I'm 18, I'm 19." I don't see how that makes you a child molester. She was 16 not 12/13/14 where it would be much more obvious. Real child molesters seek out younger kids and prey on them purposefully. I don't see that here whatsoever. It may be the letter of the law, but I don't necessarily agree with it in this situation.

Finally, according to his lawyer, he did not have sex with her and, according to the police, he was very concerned about her injuries and wanted it conveyed he had nothing to do with them. Perhaps, he sniffed out a very bad situation and bailed on the whole proposition, but got arrested nonetheless. We'll see.

Posted by: rphilli721 | May 6, 2010 11:33 PM

Without all the facts being revealed at this point, I think the most likely speculation is that he paid for an escort who was being involuntarily prostituted, which he probably was not aware of. He almost certainly did not inquire about the girls age either. He probably presumed she was of age and he got busted. I doubt an actual forcible "rape" occurred by Taylor. He appears to be guilty of being a John that got busted. And, although many want to take some moral high ground, a fairly large percentage of males have done the same thing at some point in their lives.

Caliphacy Note... fa ana aita... ... ... if it's true it's sad and sick... yeah his only defense would be a clean DNA test with out that child's DNA on his... no really and the sad thing is, i am always hearing about these people "men and women" chasing after little boys or girls or both... it's like they don't have a mature stable mind, no really... you know even as a child growing up in this country we had a joke we would say "16 will get you 20, and any thing under could get you life"... but the funny thing is the people in this country love and over look a child molester who has some fame or money, but to me rich or poor black or white local or federal, a child molester is just that A CHILD MOLESTER... i told you so, and now they going to treat him like Art Kelly... because after that those american women and girls still say he is their hero... ... ... "that's why i don't care for american women they are like the men they bare "STUPID"

Sounds like they arrested the wrong guy. For all we know Taylor thought he was paying for a prostitute and was he supposed to ask to see her birth certificate? Prostitution is illegal, but is this story that big a deal?

Posted by: randysbailin | May 6, 2010 9:09 PM

A teenage prostitute? Grownup prostitutes are slimy enough. LT, don't wanna see your face any more.

Posted by: kls1 | May 6, 2010 5:20 PM

What was she doing with a grown up male at some motel? Did he bring her there with a gun or something? Sounds like somebody Gloria Allred should be representing... These females are weird. He does have a bad reputation. So why was she there? What did she think, they were going to do? Play checkers? I smell money somewhere for this little tart...

"LT is without a doubt one of the greatest linebacker to ever play in the HOF."

So that gives him persmission to do crack and rape girls?

Everytime I see that guy I think to myself "crackhead."

He's not a good human being, never has been.

Posted by: rmcazz | May 6, 2010 4:34 PM

For those arguing about Lawrence's place in the hall of fame...

The HOF is to honor the games greatest athletes on the field. There have been and will be in the future individuals that either break the law and get elected to the HOF or break the law after getting elected to the HOF. LT is without a doubt one of the greatest linebacker to ever play in the HOF. That's what his induction recognizes.

A hall of fame without LT would be a joke. Just like I believe a hall of fame with Pete Rose is a joke. That doesn't mean I condone their illegal activities. It just means I can seperate the achievements of the athletes from the off field failings of the man.

Posted by: 6thsense79 | May 6, 2010 3:53 PM

Blow torch in the hotel room, please don't tell me this little nugget is actually in the news feed. LT appears to be a primo candidate for the Marion Barry Sting of the Year Award.

Posted by: snake_taylor | May 6, 2010 3:16 PM

Past behavior is a predictor of future behavior. In this guy's case, once a scum bag always a scum bag!

Posted by: bg1fan | May 6, 2010 2:52 PM

WTOP reported she was 16, just a year below age for consentual sex in the state of NY. He was also charged w/ drug paraphanalia, as he had a blow torch in a hotel room. Who in their right mind brings a blow torch to a hotel room?

Posted by: mildlyinebriated | May 6, 2010 2:40 PM

I guess we should just legalize drugs so moe brain damaged amoral pieces of dirt can start banging 15 year old girls.

Posted by: AndyZ1 | May 6, 2010 2:40 PM

High1977 has a point. Let's not make a rush to judgment here. Didn't we learn anything from the OJ case?
Posted by: slim2 | May 6, 2010 2:15 PM

*************************

Are you serious? "Didn't we learn anything from the OJ case?" We learned that no matter how guilty you are, you can get off if you have enough money and lawyers. Innocent until proven guilty I agree, but LT is no saint and He should have never been anywhere near a 15 year old girl at a holiday inn, period.

If the allegations are true, then that is sick and no one is condoning it.

However, the people on this post who are recommending (and gleeful over the prospect) that he get raped in jail are pretty sick as well.

Posted by: cymp65 | May 6, 2010 2:07 PM

I thinks its funny, everyone jumps to conclusions. We have no idea what he did, if he ordered an escort, if he was at a party and she was there, we don't know. Key word, ALLEGED. If you are alleged of murder, rape, kidnapping or serious felony charges you are usually arrested or held. Wait for the news conference before you start posting your opinions. I don't like LT, good athlete, but thats it.

Posted by: High1977 | May 6, 2010 2:05 PM

A few more arrests and the prisons will have enough pro's for a full team.

Posted by: KBlit | May 6, 2010 2:04 PM

Hey LT, BUBBA sends his regards. He is licking his chops. He hasn't seen a tightend he doesn't like.
Did I mention that BUBBA has been in the slammer for the past 5 years.

Party time !!!!!!

Posted by: lildg54 | May 6, 2010 1:34 PM

Lawrence Taylor is basically screwed for life. Jane Velez-Mitchell is having several people on her show "Issues" tonight to talk about what is next for him. Geez!! Keep it in your pants, idiots!!!

"Hall of Famer" Tyrus Raymond Cobb beat a man to death.
"Hall of Famer" Rogers Hornsby was a known racist and a jerk.
"Hall of Famer" Orenthal James Simpson, well, we all know.
"Hall of Famer" Lawrence Taylor?

Sports honoraria don't honor good people. Merely the best athletes.

Posted by: Meepo | May 6, 2010 1:19 PM

"Taylor has had legal problems in the past, including multiple arrests on drug-related charges". Why is he still in the hall of fame? Given his record should he not be elected to the hall of SHAME?
It doesn't say much about the NFL. Maybe they should rename the NFL to the NTL (national thug league).

Posted by: jaspcon | May 6, 2010 1:12 PM

When will pro athletes learn to stay far away from situations like this. There are plenty of trustworthy escort services to provide these services without any surprises. If they don't know who to call, ask their local politicians.

Posted by: eldergent | May 6, 2010 1:12 PM

LT should be thrown under the jail. I hope he finds his 500lb mate in jail who will give him a no meaning to tight end.

But as far Tiger Woods goes there is no comparison consensual adults should never be brought into terms with non consensual teenagers.

Posted by: 411Tibby | May 6, 2010 1:11 PM

I used to think LT was an OK guy with a coke problem, now I know he's a scumbag. I hope he gets some "loving" from his prison mates when he gets convicted.
