Charlie Batch to start for Steelers
Veteran Charlie Batch will start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, Coach Mike Tomlin announced Wednesday.
Batch takes over for Dennis Dixon, who suffered a knee injury during last Sunday's win over the Tennessee Titans.
Dixon was the team's fill-in starter with Ben Roethlisberger serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
Byron Leftwich was in line to begin the season as the club's starter but suffered a knee injury in the preseason finale. The Steelers re-signed Leftwich on Monday after releasing him Friday. But the starting nod this week goes to Batch.
"It feels good," Batch said, according to the Steelers' Web site. "All along I was trying to throw my hat into the ring to be one of the options for these first four games. Did I imagine it being this way? No, but here I am."
The Steelers play at Tampa on Sunday against the unbeaten Buccaneers.
