Vikings plan to release Randy Moss

UPDATED (9:50 p.m.)...

The Minnesota Vikings plan to waive wide receiver Randy Moss, the team announced Monday.

"This decision was made based on what we thought was in the best interests of the Minnesota Vikings, both in the short and long term," Vikings Coach Brad Childress said in a written statement released by the club. "We wish Randy the best as he moves forward in his career."

Childress informed Vikings players earlier Monday that the team intended to make the move. Moss's name did not appear on the NFL's waiver wire Monday, an executive with another team said, meaning the move was not officially made by the end of the business day.

The development came one day after Moss followed a one-catch performance in Sunday's loss at New England with an extended monologue during his postgame news conference in which he praised the Patriots, his former team. Moss also suggested that the Vikings had been reluctant to follow the advice that he offered during the week about facing the Patriots, and lamented a decision by Childress late in the first half to try for a touchdown on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal.

Moss had 13 catches in four games for the Vikings after being obtained in a trade with the Patriots.

He had nine catches in four games earlier this season for the Patriots.

Any team that claims Moss off waivers would be responsible for paying the remainder of his $6.4 million salary for this season. If Moss clears waivers, he would become an unrestricted free agent and could sign a new contract with any team.

Agent Joel Segal, who represents Moss, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he already had heard from interested teams.

"Randy is very sad to find out about being waived by the Vikings this morning," Segal said in an e-mail to the newspaper. "He has and always will remain fond of the fans in Minnesota. We will let the process of the waiver wire take its course and we will move on from there."

Childress reportedly told Vikings players at a team meeting Monday that Moss would be released.

Vikings linebacker Ben Leber told the Star Tribune that Childress didn't provide the players with a reason for the move.

Childress "just wanted to give everybody a heads-up and say this is what's going on, and that's it," Leber told the paper. "He didn't really dive into any details, and just said that's what we're going to go with."

Childress did not announce the move during a news conference earlier Monday, saying he thought the Vikings had listened to Moss's advice about the Patriots and he thought Moss's comments Sunday merely were a reflection of his fondness for his former team.

Moss was fined $25,000 by the NFL last week for failing to cooperate with the media.

After telling reporters in the locker room following the Vikings' 28-18 defeat to the Patriots at Gillette Stadium that he would speak to them in the interview room, Moss appeared in the interview area and spoke without taking questions from reporters.

"Look, I got fined $25,000 for not talking to you all," Moss said. "Me personally, I really don't care. But at the same time, I do answer questions throughout the week. For the league to fine me $25,000--I'm not going to answer any more questions for the rest of this year. If it's going to be an interview, I'm going to conduct it. So I'll answer my own questions--ask myself the questions, then give you all the answers."

Moss spoke extensively about his admiration for the Patriots and their coach, Bill Belichick. He said he missed the Patriots and their players.

"I can't really say enough about this team [and] this organization," Moss said of the Patriots.

He said he'd tried to help the Vikings ready for Sunday's game.

"I tried to prepare," Moss said. "I tried to talk to the players and coaches about how this game was going to be played, a couple tendencies here, a couple tendencies there. But the bad part about it, you have six days to prepare for a team and on the seventh day--that's Sunday, meaning today--I guess they come over to me and say... you were right about a couple plays and a couple schemes that they were going to run.

"And it hurts as a player that you put a lot of hard work in all week, and toward the end of the week--Sunday when you get on the field--that's when they acknowledge about the hard work you put in throughout the week. So that's actually a disappointment."

Moss also said the Vikings might have been well served by kicking a field goal a little more than a minute before halftime with the game tied at 7. Instead, Childress left his offense on the field for a fourth-down gamble from New England's 1-yard line. Tailback Adrian Peterson was tackled for a two-yard loss.

"I wish we would have had that three at the end of the half," Moss said. "Maybe it could have been different. Maybe not."

The Vikings traded a third-round draft pick next spring to the Patriots last month for Moss and a seventh-round draft choice in 2012. The Patriots have won all three of their games since trading Moss to improve their record to 6-1.

The Vikings' record dropped to 2-5 with Sunday's loss.

Moss...Randy, that is...would look good in burgundy and gold. As a player, he's a head case. But as a reciever...we could actually use him.
